08/18/2004 04:38 PMWhat exactly did the Iranians tell European diplomats last month The
big story here is not what [undersecretary of state] Bolton said -- at
least not in the sense of considering it presumptively factual. It is
rather that while we're in the midst of the administration's passing
off its past sins on admittedly blameworthy intelligence agencies, it
is going right ahead with the same sort of manipulative and deceitful
practices that have already caused the nation such grief....

Tired of writing (and rewriting) code to manage your
application's configuration variables? Take a look at the PEAR Config
class, a PHP toolkit designed specifically for manipulating
configuration files and the data within them. This article
demonstrates using the Config class to read and write configuration
files in XML, PHP and INI formats, and use built-in methods to easily
build Web-based application configuration modules.

Over the course of this tutorial, I'll be examining Perl's
arrays in detail, explaining what they are, how they work, and how you
can use them to get things done faster, better and cheaper. In
addition to providing a gentle introduction to Perl arrays and hashes
in general, this article will also offer you a broad overview of
Perl's array manipulation functions, providing you with a handy
reference that should help you write more efficient code.
Symbol Table Manipulation
Symbol Table Manipulation
03/19/2005 02:39 AMOne of the most dramatic advantages of dynamic languages is that they
provide access to the symbol table at run-time, allowing new functions
and variables to spring into existence as you need them. Though
they're not always the right solution to common problems, they're very
powerful and useful in certain circumstances. Phil Crow demonstrates
how and when and why to manipulate Perl's symbol table.

dropped the price from $29 to $19.99. The best…

More memory
More memory
07/13/2004 02:02 PMI feel like it’s Christmas. Today I’m expecting the
FedEx guy to bring me 512MB RAM for my development machine.
Here’s the sad tale...
When Xcode was new, I gave it a bunch of slack because it was new. I
figured that the performance problems would get fixed.
But Xcode isn’t new anymore, and I’m still seeing
performance problems. Just the other day it finally occurred to me
that it’s time to figure out what’s going on. No more
slack.

The performance problems were pretty simple: over time, the UI would
get more and more sluggish, to the point where things like closing a
window might take ten seconds. Debugging was sometimes nearly
impossible, as it would often time out before retrieving variable
data, and each single-step might take 30 seconds. (I’m guessing
on the times. It felt like 30 seconds, but it might have been less. Or
more.)
I ended up quitting and restarting Xcode several times a day, just to
reverse the sluggishness.
I found that this wasn’t true when I was working on a small
project—it was perfectly snappy then—but NetNewsWire
isn’t a small project.
So—finally, sheesh—I ran top to see what was going
on. It turned out that the sluggishness was a result of not having
enough memory. Well, that’s easy to fix!
My development machine already has 512MB, so this will double it.
It’s a dual-processor 867Mhz G4. Not the speediest kid on the
block, but plenty fast enough—as long as it’s not running
out of memory.

A related subject is the subject of build times. I mentioned that
NetNewsWire isn’t a small project, and it’s not, but
NetNewsWire 2.0’s main project is smaller than that of
NetNewsWire 1.0.8—even though we’ve been adding a bunch of
features.
One of the ways we achieved that was to move a bunch of things into
separate, loadable bundles. As a small example, think of the Bandwidth
Stats window. Its code is fairly stable, and it’s not something
everybody uses every time they launch NetNewsWire, so we took it out
of the main NetNewsWire project and created a separate project that
builds a bundle—a kind of plugin—that NetNewsWire loads
only when needed.
If you do this enough, you can end up with a smaller project
that’s faster to build—even if you’re also adding
features at the same time.
Users benefit too, because your app loads only what’s essential
at startup, and loads less-used things only if and when needed.
(A side effect of this is that some day, if there’s interest, we
may formalize NetNewsWire’s internal plugin API and make it so
other developers can write plugins that add windows to
NetNewsWire.)

06/22/2005 02:43 AMOne non-Supernova event signficant enough to note here. Bob
Pepper, Chief of Policy Development at the FCC and my former boss and
mentor, is leaving the Commission. (He just told me the internal
email went around announcing his farewell party, so that makes it
official!)
Pepper is irreplaceable. He's the institutional memory of the FCC
on pretty much every important policy issue. And he has been at the
center of tech policy strategy at the FCC since before the commercial
Internet emerged. I don't have time right now for a fuller
appreciation, but it's a great loss for the FCC.

Memory on the Rise
04/14/2004 03:49 PMThe price of your typical RAM chip is about to hit the roof.
According to
ZDNet, "The
price of memory chips is rising at its fastest rate in more than four
years due to an unexpected global shortage." So far, the price rise
has been over 70%. ZDNet is assuming that this price increase could
be due to difficulty with the new production technology, and the fact
that many companies are beginning to make other memory types (flash
cards, etc.).
