North Pole Goes Wireless

North Pole Goes Wireless 04/15/2005 04:36 AM

The possible puns regarding this story are practically endless, though the Register does a good job of exploiting most of them: Two Intel employees set up a hotspot at a research camp at the North Pole. It uses Iridium phones for backhaul, which means the access is probably excruciatingly slow, but people at the North Pole probably aren't complaining. The deployment is purportedly meant to check out how the equipment fares in such cold, wet weather, though there are plenty of other such experiments that have been done for some time. Dave Hughes has done tons of work in Alaska with wireless networks and he was also instrumental in enabling the hotspot at Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal.

Intel Goes Wireless At North Pole

Intel Goes Wireless At North Pole 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

north_pole_kthx.jpgWhile not busy encouraging the destruction of the original 'Moore's Law' article, Intel's employees have installed a wireless hot spot near the North Pole. Built in the Arctic region at the Barneo ice camp, Intel Russia engineers installed an 802.11 b/g access point and established a connection with four of their laptops, 78 miles from the North Pole (using, of course, Centrino mobile technology to accomplish this feat). The hot spot has since been taken down, but survived the cold (-22°F or worse) and worked reliably. Of course, "Intel pointed to the experiment as an example of how mobile technology allows users to work anywhere," even if I can't get a signal in my own backyard.

Utility pole boxes as tourist maps

Utility pole boxes as tourist maps 07/26/2004 12:33 PM
Darren sez, "Victoria, Canada's City Engineering department has found an inventive use for those ubiquitous traffic control boxes you see on lamp and traffic light posts. In high pedestrian traffic areas, they've pasted neighbourhood maps on them. The maps wrap around three sides of the box, identifying areas of interest (as well as, interestingly, the city's URL).

"What a great idea. Not only do they use existing visual real estate (avoiding the need for other street-level maps), but it's a really cheap, low-tech solution to graffiti. As a guy who spent two sweltering summers across the street from the pictured box, at the busiest Tourism Information Centre in the country, I appreciate any non-human assistance for tourists."
