I got a "new" used PC recently to use as a test machine. I call it "The Beast" because it's very large and very heavy. The tower case is huge. The Beast has a SCSI controller, which is new ground for me. When you power it on, it searches for strangely-named devices that cause flash-backs to the ide-scsi debates. It has a smallish ten gigabyte IDE disk drive, an ATAPI CD-Rom, a floppy drive, a 700mhz Pentium III, and 256 meg of RAM. It also has a problem. It came with an operating system that has a viral nature. No, I'm not talking about GPL licensing. I mean it came pre-loaded with Windows, which is the official ground zero for Internet infections.

Dual booting Linux and Windows 2000 12/26/2002 01:47 AM
Dual booting Linux and Windows 2000. I'm going to start using Linux with Windows XP. Wish me luck. The first step is to setup dual booting correctly. I'm also downloading Linux 8.0 with SmartFTP so I have the images. Wish me luck. I'm doing this on my desktop at work.

Dual-booting multiple Linux distros

Dual-booting multiple Linux distros 12/28/2004 03:09 AM
All the Linux flavors I have tried have no problem dual-booting with Windows, but how do you boot multiple Linux flavors, like Fedora and Ubuntu? This is a great way to have your favorite distribution on the first drive (hda) and experiment with the hundreds of others on a second drive (hdb). I found many procedures by Googling, but most of them concentrated on booting two distros on the same hard drive. However, this is a very simple procedure.

Hollywood Creates Software For Automatic
Booting Of File Sharers
04/19/2004 01:38 PM
The folks in Hollywood are getting a bit more technical. Realizing that it was taking some ISPs and university network administrators some time to respond to their DMCA takedown notices when accusing file sharers or illegal activity, Universal has written up some open source software that they're pushing on universities and ISPs that would help automate the process of kicking them off the network. The idea is that the studios could send out a notification, that would automatically go into the system, send off an alert email to the user, and then shut off their account until the "offending material" was removed. Leaving aside the irony of Hollywood offering free open source software (this is the same industry that is still telling people "if it's free, you stole it"), it also seems to go a step beyond what most people consider due process in making sure that those kicked off from the network actually did something wrong.

snaquafm.jpg imageAlthough it won't do you much good once you get under enough water to soak up all the radio waves, the Aqua FM Swim Snorkel will let you surface surfers listen to FM radio while you float, making it easier to ignore God's beautiful undersea creation. Even better, the Aqua FM snorkel uses no earphones, and instead uses bone conduction to pass the audio signal through your teeth right into your dome. And if you want to test the range of FM underwater, feel free; the radio snorkel is waterproof to 33 feet.
