Jon Udell on easy RSS subscribing
01/22/2004 02:10 AMJon Udell:
What RSS
users want: consistent one-click subscription.
I agree with Jon, which is why I added feed-scheme support to
NetNewsWire. Other newsreaders already support this method, with more
to come.
But before this becomes truly useful, three things are needed:
1. There isn’t a standard graphic yet. There should be something
that’s as much a standard as the orange XML graphic.

I asked
Bryan Bell to make a graphic that
says FEED, since it’s the feed URL scheme. But then it was
suggested it really should say SUBSCRIBE, so it’s more clear
what you’re doing. But then that would make the button quite a
bit larger, out-of-step with other buttons... and there I set it aside
for a while.
A standard graphic is still needed.
2. More newsreaders need to support this. Though a bunch do, with more
on the way, they’ve not all announced support for this
convention.
Philippe Martin added an important piece of the puzzle (on OS X) by
adding an easy way to set your default newsreader by using his free
IC-Switch
app.
If you’re an OS X developer, and you have questions about how to
support the feed URL scheme, I’ll be happy to answer your
questions.
3. People with websites need to know about the convention. People who
create default templates for weblog publishing systems need to know
about it. This is straightforward evangelism: explain the benefits of
it, give people a cool graphic and an easy howto, and ask them to add
it.

Udell: offer an alternative to CAPCHAS
12/19/2004 03:30 PM John
Udell: The CAPTCHA game: "Any scheme that relies on perceptual or
cognitive talents, in order to distinguish humans from robots, will
necessarily discriminate against some population of humans. If you're
using such an approach, accessibility dictates that you offer several
alternatives."
Udell comes to the same conclusion that we did with Roller. You have
to offer several alternatives. Roller 1.0 has a pluggable comment
authentication mechanism so that the Roller administrator can decide
how to authenticate comments. I don't think this is quite good enough.
The administrator should not be the one making the choice. The person
who is leaving the comment should be the one who chooses the
authentication mechanism.

08/07/2004 10:17 PMThe two-way Web unleashed by the blogging revolution is,
and will remain, largely a textual medium. And yet we're clearly at an
inflection point. It's increasingly feasible to create and share media
content. If you needed special AV skills and instincts in order to do
that, it would be a non-starter. But I've never been an AV guy. What
motivates me to explore the subject now is a profound sense that it's
ready to become part of mainstream communication on the Web. I'm not
sure where this series of columns will lead, but let's take it one
step at a time. [Full story at O'Reilly Network]
The typical subjects weigh in....
Lucas
Gonze
Bullet points:
- Bloggish things will provide the main index for searching
- A/V needs non-hosed URLs; given non-hosed URLs, a/v can take off.
- HTTP is the protocol, not RTSP or other specialized protocols.
- A/V can do a lot of the grunt work that software is currently doing.
- MP3 blogs and related tools are low-tech enough to let the masses
into the temple attended formerly by the movie and recording
industries.
Key points:
When web sites present AV content, the prevailing ethic is to bury the
URLs deep within layers of indirection, script, and server-side
sleight-of-hand. ... URLs are the key to a whole new way of attending
to media. ... In the realm of AV, the engine is starving for URLs.
and:
Streaming protocols are necessary for live broadcast, but otherwise,
plain old HTTP is good enough not only for sequential access, but also
for random access. ... This has extraordinary implications for
multimedia bloggers, few of whom have access to Helix, QuickTime, or
Windows Media servers, but many of whom can post files to web servers
that support HTTP 1.1.

From O'Reilly Network: Prime-Time Hypermedia:
QUOTE
In a series of columns
beginning with this one, I'll review and elaborate on a variety of
hypermedia techniques I've been experimenting with. I don't know beans
about high-end AV technologies, so don't look for expert guidance or
Hollywood production values. I come at this from the bottom up, as a
web-savvy blogger frustrated by the opaqueness and intractability of
existing hypermedia content. I want to be able to repurpose that stuff
on my blog. I want you to be able to do the same on your blog. And I'd
like to see all of our blogs enriched with original audio and video
content, where appropriate. It's time to take the Web to that next
level, and the means to do so are at
hand.

The time has come to rock, and rock NOW.
And I'd like
to see all of our blogs enriched with original audio and video
content, where appropriate. It's time to take the Web to that next
level, and the means to do so are at hand.
O'Reilly Network: Prime-Time Hypermedia
This is all very heavy for me. Tears are forming....
What can I say - it's the vision we had in 1984 when we started
MacroMind - which became Macromedia - and then the vision stopped.
Now we're picking up where we left off. Thanks Jon and thank you everyone for being smarter than my former
company.
This is what it's all about.
The fact that Jon calls it hyperme
dia is even heavier for me.

Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming
06/18/2002 08:16 AMI've just returned from the What's Next conference in Brattleboro,
Vermont, where I gave a pair of talks (one on web services, one on
application servers). The keynote speaker for the day was Alan Cooper,
designer of Visual Basic, author of several books, and founder of a
company that specializes in interaction design.
Cooper's view is that the kinds of disasters that have always plagued
the industry -- most recently, the catastrophic outcomes of many CRM
(customer relationship management) systems -- are a result neither of
poor strategy, nor of poor engineering, but of a failure to properly
coordinate the two. The missing piece in his view is product planning
and design, done according to a methodology that Cooper has devised
and that his company practices. This methodology aligns itself with
Colonel John Boyd's OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop,
fashionable in military circles.

Thanks to everyone who showed up in Mar del Plata to participate in
the ICANN meeting. I thought that the discussion was healthy and
productive and although we moved forward on a number of things, we are
left with a lot of work to do based on the feedback we received on the
strategic plan, the board governance guidelines, .pro, .net, IDNs,
transparency, process and a number of other topics. Special thanks to
staff for running such a great meeting in the absence of our CEO Paul
Twomey. I think you did an excellent job.
Thanks to everyone who showed up for dinner last night and special thanks to Mariano for organizing everything. It
was great to meet the Argentine bloggers. I'm sorry I was late. Our
bus from Mar del Plata broke down and we had have them send a new
one.
Thanks to Mookie letting me stay at his place in Buenos Aires.
I'm off to San Francisco today to do my usual rounds and to go a
Institute for the Future retreat.
Since my flight doesn't leave until this evening, I hope I can do a
bit of moblogging in Buenos Aires.

San Francisco day four and a bit...
San Francisco day four and a bit...
08/16/2004 02:02 PMSo the day before yesterday didn't go quite as I'd planned. I
didn't go and see Dinah or her kittens, but I did get to give Flakes
to Heather and then go with her to
Taco Bell where we consumed about $16 worth of faux Mexican cuisine
between us. Then there was the car wash, and the drive back into the
city to go say hi to Derek, two
chihuahuas and a cat named Spoo before wandering off to kid robot (dumb toys purchased:
2) and then Giant
Robot in Haight Ashbury. Then there was a nice "Blue Meanie"
smoothie in a wifi-enabled café which was pretty bloody pleasant, all
things considered. The next planned excusion was the epic walk over to
the Tonga rooms, which would actually have been pretty bloody epic if
I hadn't walked in completely the opposite direction for the first
twenty minutes or so. So I got a cab with a driver who listened to
light country and suffered manfully the hell of Tim McGraw's My Next Thirty Years (and I quote):
My next thirty years I’m gonna settle all the scores
Cry a little less, laugh a little more
Find a world of happiness without the hate and fear
Figure out just what I’m doing here
In my next thirty years
Oh my next thirty years, I’m gonna watch my weight
Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late
Drink a little lemonade and not so many beers
Maybe I’ll remember my next thirty years
You see what I'm talking about? Anyway - so I got to the Fairmont a
bit early and so decided to loiter around a bit in the foyer and read
my new book while all the
smartly dressed people looked at me strangely and tried to remember my
face just in case they'd need to identify me in a Guantanamo tribunal
later in the year. And then the event began and I got to talk to a
couple of dozen neat cool web people that I just don't get to see
enough. I danced (badly) with Mena and Dinah and Heather and chatted a lot to David about what it was like
to be an Englishman living in the States at the moment which was
extremely interesting. I felt a bit sorry for my poor ex-flatmate
Mella who had just got off the plane in San Francisco and come
straight to the bar because she didn't know anyone, but I think she
enjoyed herself. And of course the bar's fake thunder, lightning, rain
and floating boat/island/band were as awesome as ever...
Yesterday started a little more sedately with an enormous cooked
breakfast over at the Pork
Store with Leslie, Lance (also here) and Mella. Mella and I then
wandered up into town, up Valencia and past a few second hand stores
up to the Civic Center and then up Market for a bit of an explore.
(This feels a bit like a 'what I did on my holiday' tract, so
apologies for that.) And then after a few confusing disorganisational
miscarriages, we ended up with a friend of Mella's called Emily
driving through Chinatown, then walking up to Coit Tower and then down
to Pier 39 for Oysters and general seafood. Then Mella wandered off to
meet Emily's parents, while I returned back to Leslie's (past the San
Francisco Bear Fair), met up with Ben Cerveny and Webb, drove around the
city in a convertible car before wandering up to Molly's place and
drinking a few glasses of wine and basically passing out. Nice
evening!
And what's next over the next couple of days?
- Visit Six Apart
- Meet up with Kevin Marks
for lunch
- See Ben Cerveny and Jim Speth and talk about geeky shit
- Try and do some gay stuff of some kind

where I met loads of people - some for the first time, others not.
Looked slightly nervous around some people who do really good work.
Touched a couple of them without them noticing (or at least without
them calling the police). Got a free USB dongle thing and saw the 3.1
release of MT which doesn't seem overly dramatic at first but kind of
sits in the back of your head and wiggles its tush in the direction of
interesting things. Cab back to Leslie's place - talking about The

must confess am vaguely dreading it.

08/17/2004 03:19 PMSo what did I do yesterday... Er... Basically went for lunch with
Kevin and Jesse where we talked about Apple and set-top boxes and food
and stuff, wandered into Technorati and said hi to people
(wave to Tantek), micro-bumped
into Joi, then got the CalTrain up to
see Six Apart (purely for fun),
got a train back with Anil
and finally wandered off to The Cafe
for my required dose of gaydom, which was a bit weird as it was
hip-hop night and I felt like everyone's fat beardy grandfather. So I
got a bit drunk and danced clumsily and collapsed back at Leslie's
unconscious at about one. Funny day.

San Francisco: Saturday morning...
08/14/2004 01:20 PMSo I kind of slacked off yesterday, if truth be told. Not a lot of
exploring, not a lot of drenching myself in San Francisco - just a
fair amount of doing things I like to do that I don't really often get
the opportunity to do. So I went to see two films (the other one was
the
Manchurian Candidate - much recommended), bought a couple of books, a case for my iPod, had a really nice Clam
Chowder and portion of Fish and Chips at San Francisco's best American restaurant and
sat in Starbucks for a bit
(thanks Anil) starting to
catch up on all the cool stuff that's been going on around the web in
the million years since we started working on representing programming
on Radio 3.
Today I think is going to be more about getting some of the flavour
of the city - or at least starting to ramp up my mucking around with
local geeks. Hopefully I'm going to go see Danah's kittens in the
next couple of hours, go see Heather at Taco Bell around lunchtime, and
then go see a movie
with Leslie this afternoon.
But all of this is really preamble to the main event which should
be happening this evening - a drink and catch-up with local geeks at
San Francisco's famous Tonga Room
and Hurricane Bar from 8.30 this evening. Come along if you can.
It'll be fun...

On my upcoming trip to San Francisco...
On my upcoming trip to San Francisco...
06/17/2005 03:22 PMSo here's the plan - I'm flying to San Francisco on Saturday and
I'll be hanging around until the 26th with all my geek hipster
friends. But don't take that to mean that I'm busy all the time - I'm
keen as ever to see (and meet) as many neat people as possible. When I
go to San Francisco, I normally try and set up some kind of drunken
evening at the Tonga Room - because the rain and the thunder
and the tiki stylings and the lounge act are all so cool. But I am
also aware that the cocktails are terrible and that maybe I've
milked the experience as much as I can. So, guys, does anyone have any
better ideas?
While I'm at it, I might as well put out another call - are there
any glorious geek events, any particularly cool exhibitions or bars
that I'd regret not going to? It's not every day I get a full week in
my spiritual homeland to reconnect with the mothership. So what should
I be doing?
Of course, no trip comes without its inconveniences, and this one
is particularly poignant - while I'm on the flight to SFO I'll be
missing the big reveal in the final episode of Doctor Who. This is doubly
galling since I'm currently enduring hundreds of lunatic comments on
my Doctor Who and Bad Wolf post. Regular
visitors to the site may be getting bored of hearing about this, but
things are way out of control - the post has received seven
hundred comments as of now, and sometimes they come in at the rate
of one or two a minute. The whole thing's starting to remind me of Kottke's
famous Matrix meltdown. All of which is a roundabout way of saying
don't spoil it for me until I've got my hands on a copy.
Anyway, as of this evening, I'm either in pre-flight limbo or stuck
in some terminal interzone, and I'm hoping to take the opportunity to
catch up with all the notes and writing I've been doing recently but
haven't had a chance to post to my site. So more later...

It looks like the Borders website hasn't been updated yet, but I'm

instead of me choosing what to read, I let you guys pick what you'd
like to hear? If you're planning to come out on the 14th, say so in
the comments, and leave a brief description, or chapter number, or
page number, or whatever, and the majority will rule.

Wild parrots in San Francisco
My first year in San Francisco, I'm living in Russian Hill.
One day I hear squawking up above like I've never heard, and I love
birds, don't know why, but I look up.
I see a flock of big green parrots, almost feels miraculous.
Since then, I learn that SF has two flocks of such parrots, and for
years, Marc Bittner has been studying and feeding them. I feel this is
really cool.
Today, I just finished his book the Wild
Parrots of Telegraph Hill and it was really good. It also
discusses a
related documentary by Judy Irving, same subject, and I
gotta see it sometime. [craigblog]
When I lived on the Embarcadero - flocks of squaking parrots would
coming flying across the sky. It's wild. A truly San
Francisco experience.
