OS X 10.3.1 Released

OS X 10.3.1 Released 11/10/2003 11:17 PM

Apple has released OS X 10.3.1, an update to Panther. The update "delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies: FileVault, Printing, WebDav, and FireWire 800 drives. This update also includes the latest Security Updates." Also mentioned in the update notes, "Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information." Mac OS X 10.3.1 is a 1.4MB download and is available via Software Update.

PKS 0.9.6 released 02/07/2003 09:40 AM
PKS is an OpenPGP Public Key Server. It allows users to store and lookup public keys from the server's database. It can also synchronize with other servers. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'd like to announce that PKS 0.9.6 has been released! The file can be downloaded from the SourceForge Download Area for the "pks" project. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61738) 19427b543972c23fbc1c167d5408d3a9 *pks-0.9.6.tar.gz I just uploaded the tarball to SourceForge, so don't be surprised if it isn't available on SF mirrors yet. See the release notes (NEWS file) and ChangeLog for more information on the changes since 0.9.5. BE SURE TO READ THE UPGRADING FILE! IMPORTANT NOTES FOR INSTALLATION: * READ THE UPGRADING FILE! The database format has changed slightly, and backwards compatibility is NOT the default. * If you want to be able to add keys via HTTP, make sure to uncomment this line in your pksd.conf: www_readonly 0 * If you want to be able to download keys, make sure to uncomment max_reply_keys. Also, you'll probably want to change this from -1 (unlimited) to a more sane value. * BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD): PKS should work on these platforms. However, no current ports of PKS exist. (FreeBSD's and NetBSD's ports of pks-0.9.4 should NOT be used for security reasons.) * Debian Linux users: The Debian package should catch up to pks-0.9.6 very shortly. * RedHat Linux users: Running "rpm -ta pks-0.9.6.tar.gz" should build you the required RPMs. This release is intended to be a solid, stable bugfix and feature upgrade to 0.9.5. Bug reports and patches are always welcome. Download of the week: Speed Download 2 12/07/2003 04:05 PM
After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

iPod Firmware Petition

iPod Firmware Petition 07/22/2004 01:22 PM
With the recent release of the 4G iPods, Apple released an iPod firmware update adding new features/functionality to the iPod. Unfortunately, the new features are only available to 4G ("click wheel") iPods?leaving the not-so-old 3G iPods in the dust. When I first heard about this, my first response was, "Why can?t they just release the same firmware upgrade for both the 3G and 4G models?" I don?t know about models older than 3G, but as far as I know, the new model is exactly the same as the 3G. The firmware could easily work for both. This seems to be a marketing ploy on Apple?s part. Get the people who want these simple new features to buy a whole new iPod. Well, people aren?t buying it. Enter the Apple iPod Firmware Petition, signed by over 3,000 people when this entry was posted, which states the following:
To: Apple Computer We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G), believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and could be easily added to past iPods with a firmware update. But instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users. We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to the older generation iPods should be instituted Sincerely, The Undersigned
Being a 3G 15GB owner myself, I must agree. How about you?
