Real's Half-Price Sale: $.49 Songs
Real's Half-Price Sale: $.49 Songs
08/17/2004 07:32 AM
To kick
off its iPod-compatible "Harmony" music download service (which works
inside of RealPlayer), RealNetworks is offering a limited-time
half-price sale, selling online downloads for just $.49, as well as
half-price albums. This is separate from Real's streaming Rhapsody
service, although Real plans to add the Harmony songs to that service
as well later in the year. The upshot of all of this? Ignoring
Wal-Mart's initial lower-price entry into the music download space,
this could be the start of the first legal music downloading price
war. Apple probably won't flinch (yet), but hopefully this is a sign
of lower prices all around in the near future.

Half-male, half-female, all crab
Half-male, half-female, all crab
06/17/2005 03:35 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Fishermen caught a crab in the lower Chesapeake Bay that's literally
half male, half female. Among other differences, male blue crabs have
deep blue claws while females' claw tips look like they were painted
with red nail polish. The fishermen noticed that this particular crab
had one of each. Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine
Science say that the condition, known as bilateral gynandromorphism,
is caused by a "chromosomal mishap." Studying the rare animal could
increase understanding of crab sexual development and breeding
behavior. From the Washington Post:

Before turning over the crab to the scientists, (boat captain David)
Johnson and other watermen conducted their own experiment into its sex
life, with bewildering results. They dropped a female crab, which was
just about ready to mate, into its tank.
First, the half-and-half crab cradled the female under his legs, as a
male crab would do in preparation for mating.
Then, the crab seemed to lose interest in the female and let her go,
Johnson said.
Then a day later . . .
"He ate half of her," Johnson said.

Scripts and Slashes
10/28/2003 11:08 PMIn an earlier blog entry, I mentioned how Safari was having to
emulate a quirk in Mozilla in order to make a particular Web site
work. When Mozilla encounters a <script/> element
with an XML-style self-closing /, it actually closes the tag, even in
HTML pages. This is - I believe - incorrect behavior, since in HTML
the / is invalid and should simply be discarded, leaving you with an
open tag instead.
If you try this in WinIE and Safari 1.0, you'll see that they
behave identically. They both ignore the / and leave the script open.
Both Mozilla and Opera, however, honor the / and close up the script
tag.
With my "fix" for this bug, the latest Safari will now honor the /
as well. I wonder if this behavior was deliberate on the part of
Mozilla and Opera or just some accidental fallout from their XML
implementations... whatever the case, we're all stuck with it now,
since Web sites are (amazingly) writing to it.
