Real's Half-Price Sale: $.49 Songs

Real's Half-Price Sale: $.49 Songs 08/17/2004 07:32 AM

real_harmony.jpg imageTo kick off its iPod-compatible "Harmony" music download service (which works inside of RealPlayer), RealNetworks is offering a limited-time half-price sale, selling online downloads for just $.49, as well as half-price albums. This is separate from Real's streaming Rhapsody service, although Real plans to add the Harmony songs to that service as well later in the year. The upshot of all of this? Ignoring Wal-Mart's initial lower-price entry into the music download space, this could be the start of the first legal music downloading price war. Apple probably won't flinch (yet), but hopefully this is a sign of lower prices all around in the near future.

Real Sells 1 Million Half-Price Songs 08/27/2004 01:47 PM
RealNetworks announced that it has sold 1 million songs in the week since beginning its half-price music promotion. Real dropped song pricing to 49-cents from 99-cents, in part to highlight its Harmony technology, which allows purchased songs to be played on over 70 digital media players including Apple's iPod. But Apple has chastised Real for what it calls "tactics and ethics of a hacker," and says future iPod software updates will likely break compatibility with Harmony.

Nintendo DS Price, Launch Date Announced 09/21/2004 10:38 AM

NintendoDS_small.jpg imageAnd to continue the gaming tip, it looks like Nintendo has officially announced the final information regarding the new DS handheld, and it's sort of a mixed bag. On the (way) upside, the official price is just $150, which is a lot better than the $200+ numbers we had been hearing. US gamers can expect to see the DS in stores by November 21st - a launch date actually a week before Japan, if you can believe it. The DS-to-DS instant messaging software, PictoChat, will come bundled for free, but no proper games, per se.

More on Google Size Limit

More on Google Size Limit 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Previously we reported on speculation that Google may be hitting a size limit: standard C coding uses 32-bits of storage for numbers, which means that Google might be running out of numbers to identify new documents with. Adding further credence to this theory is the fact that Google has finally added more pages to their results, but only by using a separate supplemental index. I can't think of any good reasons to do this except to get around the size restriction....

Google slashed the value of its initial public offering almost in half Wednesday as a cool reception by investors, regulatory problems and a poor market for Internet stocks dogged the search engine giant on the eve of its market debut. Google cut the range of its IPO price to $85-$95 per share from $108-$135 per share and the number of shares that shareholders plan to sell to 5.5 million from almost 12 million. The cuts…
