http://landma rk-project.com/rssnewsfeed/index.php

This web tool is designed to help teachers and students create RSS feeds for aggregating news stories from 4500 sites in Google News, that are related to curriculum topics and issues. The resulting feed addresses and utilizes a feed builder constructed by Justin Pfister and can be placed in your news aggregator such as Bloglines or your own RSS news aggregator software. Many thanks to Justin for his exceedingly useful tool. Also, this web tool was inspired by the work of Will Richardson, author of RSS: A Quick Start Guide for Educators. This will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide. This will also be added to thr resource listing in my Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators presentation blog. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension
09/20/2004 10:22 AM

When Firefox add ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to choose an external RSS reader.

So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.

Michael Koziarski rose to the challenge and created F eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed: // protocol. Which means that even though the extension was designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon. Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the Mac.

Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR" icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon. Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel" wizard to subscribe to it.

Details on Feed Your Reader are h ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here .

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

One of the shiniest new feature of Java 5.0 (aka Java 1.5) is a rich set of concurrent programming classes in java.util.concurrent (aka JSR 166), much of which is a direct port of Doug Lea's Concurrent Programming in Java library.  Since I don't have the luxury of using Java 5.0 yet, I've resorted to using Doug's original library which is, for the most part, functionally equivalent to java.util.concurrent but not close enough for comfort, particularly since concurrency code tend to be very sensitive to minor changes.

The good news is that Dawid Kurzyniec backported java.util.concurrent package to run under Java 1.4 and made it available as open source.  Apparently Sun is letting this happen because it's own code is based on Doug's open source library.

There are some shortcomings but nothing much to cry over.  My only complaint is that it doesn't use the java.util.concurrent package name which means I'll have to update the package names later (simple but still change nonetheless).  But that I can see the technical and legal issues preventing that from happening.  I am just glad someone did this.

The SourceForge Hegemony

The SourceForge Hegemony 04/28/2004 10:19 AM
Recently, a project I have been sharing co-admin responsiblities for was hijacked. I won't mention the name of the project because the actual hijacking isn't the subject of this rant, but I will go so far as to say said project has been around for several years, and appears in several Linux distros. Why do I call this a hijacking? Because I was removed from both admin and developer lists without my consent. Because the developers of the project were removed, and replaced with two developers who later confirmed in separate e-mails that they did not request to be put on the project, have no knowledge of the project, and were not asked if they wanted to join the project. I might also add I have been the major contributor to this project for the last three years, and while the project hasn't seen much in the way of activity over the last year or so, it was by no means an abandoned project.

With its open framework and published APIs, it can be expanded easily using third-party modules. eGroupWare has been a runaway success on

Be a SF.net download mirror (South America / India) 6. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net, The SF.NET team has been very busy during the past few months. While I don't typically like to pre-announce new features and upgrades to the site, I thought this might be a good opportunity to tell you what we are working on behind the scenes: - The stats system is back up-to-speed, and the site statistics, with the exception of CVS statistics, are now up-to-date. In the past, our stats system has had problems scaling with our exponential growth. The good news is the stats system is being rewritten from scratch and will be deployed in the next 6 weeks. This new system will provide near real-time stats so that you will be able to see how many downloads, pageviews, and CVS commits are occurring as they happen. - Developer CVS check-in/check-out is getting a major speed increase in the next 5 weeks. Anonymous check-out has been performing great and soon SSH check-ins/check-outs will have similar speeds. With this upgrade are also eliminating the 5 to 8 hour delay that currently exists between developer check-in and anonymous check-outs. Everything will be in real-time. This means as soon as you make a code change, your users can grab the latest code. This will mark the completion of our long-term CVS infrastructure improvement project. We have a lot of additional things improvements in the works, but I wanted to give you an update on CVS and stats since I know these services are extremely important to many of you. Thank you for using and supporting SourceForge.net. If you have any questions or issues with SourceForge.net, please feel free to email me directly at pat@sf.net. Thank you. Happy coding. Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net email: pat@sf.net May Project of the Month: eGroupWare -------------------------------------------- eGroupWare is a Web-based Open Source collaboration suite similar to Lotus Notes. This software is a complete framework of core tools that includes a calendar, Wiki, and a powerful content management system. With its open framework and published APIs, it can be expanded easily using third-party modules. eGroupWare has been a runaway success on SourceForge.net (SF.net). Project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/egroupware/ Home Page: http://egroupware.org/ Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-05.php June Project of the month: AWStats ----------------------------------------------- Web site managers need to have a clear idea how much traffic their site receives on a daily basis. While there are many log file analyzers available on the Internet (many at no cost), they typically don't provide a good marriage of statistics analysis and graphical display of that data. AWStats, SourceForge.net's June 2004 Project of the month, is a multiplatform open source log analyzer that provides all the statistics a webmaster needs, presented in a very professional, dynamic report. It takes only a quick glance at the project's online demo to see why so many Web professionals are downloading and deploying this software. AWStats has been on SF.net since October 2000 and has had 400,000 downloads since its inception. Project page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/awstats/ Home Page: URL: http://awstats.sourceforge.net/ Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-06.php SourceForge.net Subscriptions - Free T-shirt -------------------------------------------- SF.net subscribers receive a full array of exciting features, including priority technical support. We have extended our offer for a free T-shirt (from ThinkGeek.com) when you sign up for an annual SourceForge.net subscription. Sign up today for a subscription and help support SourceForge.net: http://sourceforge.net/subscription.php Communication between project developers and end-users is one of the most important factors in successful development. SourceForge.net provides a number of services to increase the effectiveness of communication, including our Tracker system (for bug reporting and support requests), Web-based discussion forums, and email-based mailing lists. SF.NET Services Update -------------------------------------------- The SourceForge.net team has recognized past performance issues and intermittent stability problems in our mailing list archival service. A significant effort to redesign and rewrite the mailing list archive code's database design has recently been completed, tested, and optimized and is now online. Archive updates had been suspended during the time period of the migration. The archive suspension was lifted last week, and all archives were brought up to a current state in the following 26-hour period. This rapid update of all lists was made possible by the improved performance of the archiver code and our extensive efforts to redesign the list archival system. We have further improved the archival system so that most future maintenance to the mailing list archive system can be performed without downtime to the live site. The SourceForge.net team is continuing to actively review the state of the SourceForge.net site with an eye for improvements and has a number of new projects in progress. A list of our most recently completed site and service improvements and enhancements may be found at https://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=19242&group_id=1. Your feedback is appreciated. If you have specific concerns related to the SourceForge.net site and services that you believe are not being addressed, please feel free to contact the SourceForge.net Quality of Service Manager at: moorman at sourceforge.net (Please note in your message subject that your message is a follow-up to this sitewide mailing.) Be a SF.net download mirror (South America / India) --------------------------------------------- SourceForge.net is looking to add a mirror in a South American country and India. If you have a *lot* of bandwidth (enough to provide the mirror a minimum of 40Mbps) and approximately a terabyte of available disk space, we'd like to hear from you. Besides helping SourceForge.net and the open source community, your organization will be listed on SF.net's download page, which is accessed approximately 1,500,000 times per day. If you have interest, please email pat@sf.net. Set the email subject to "bandwidth." Please include information about your company or organization and your bandwidth in the email. Thank you. In this sitewide email, I want to update you on three notable things that have occurred regarding our site and our organization since July. First, our parent company has changed its name. OSDN (Open Source Development Network) is now OSTG (The Open Source Technology Group). Why the name change? We realized that our network of sites (which include SourceForge.net, Slashdot.org, Linux.com, Freshmeat, NewsForge.net etc) caters not only to developers but also to IT professionals. Our old name didn't reflect this diverse audience. We have changed our name to better reflect who we are. OSTG currently boasts over 16 million unique individuals (both developers and IT professionals) and over 238 million pageviews per month. http://www.ostg.com/ Second, we recently received our single largest donation to SourceForge.net. The Omidyar Network, founded by Pierre Omidyar (founder of EBay) and his wife Pam, gave $400,000 to SourceForge.net. The money is being used to update the User Interface on SF.net and the tools on the site (such as the File Release System, forums and Tracker), as well as improved functionality and statistics on the site. The SF.net team would like to greatly thank the Omidyar Network for their very generous support. You can read the press release here: http://www.vasoftware.com/news/press.php/2004/1431.html Omdiyar Network's website can be viewed here: http://www.omidyar.net/ Finally, I want to tell you about a very easy way to get an Apple iPod mini. IBM is giving away 170 iPods to SF.net project admins. This is not a drawing. If your project meets a certain criteria, and you are willing to be a judge of your own project (which I know sounds a bit odd), you receive an iPod. Normally I don't pitch offers in sitewide emails, but this one is unique enough that I wanted to bring it to your attention. The only catch is the qualifications. Your project has to be a 'server-based', not written in a scripting language (or Java) and not already ported to LinuxPPC. If your project passes the criteria, I highly encourage you to visit the signup page. If more than 170 projects signup who qualify, IBM will take the top 170 projects based on activity ranking. Deadline is Friday Sept 24th, 2004. http://sourceforge.net/ppc_contest.php Thank you for using and supporting SourceForge.net. If you have any questions or issues with SourceForge.net, please feel free to email me directly at pat@sf.net. Thank you. Happy coding. Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net email: pat@sf.net New Mirror --------------------------------------------------------- SF.net serves approximately one million Open Source downloads a day to a worldwide audience. The combined bandwidth of these downloads is a sustained rate of over one gigibit per second (Gbps). SF.net couldn't provide this throughput without the support of our download partners, who provide hardware and bandwidth to support the site and the Open Source community. Today, the SF.net team would like to a announce a new partner in Germany: MESH-Solutions. MESH-Solutions provides IP bandwidth and colocation services at premiere Level3 gateways all over the world. Unlike traditional carriers, MESH-Solutions offers a wide range of additional services, including reboot services, hardware maintenance, remote hands and various consulting services. MESH-Solutions believes in Open Source for multiple reasons: its fast, its reliable and its just "very seckzy". http://www.mesh-solutions.com/sf/ The SF.net team would like to thank MESH-Solutions for their support and bandwidth. (A special thank you to Peter Lieven for his help.) August Project of the Month (POTM): Bochs --------------------------------------------------------- Emulating a CPU in software is quite a trick. A programmer has to fool the operating system, and the software running on top of the operating system, into believing that it is on genuine hardware. This requires meticulously emulating every single instruction and mode that the CPU has to offer, which is immensely complex. SourceForge.net's August 2004 project of the month is Bochs, a x86 emulator (386, 486, Pentium and Pentium Pro). Its emulation is robust enough to allow Linux, Windows 95, and Windows NT to run on top of it. The emulator runs under many hardware platforms and operating systems, including Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, so if you want to run Windows under OS X, you can do it! Bochs, pronounced 'box', is one of the top 100 projects on SourceForge.net boasting over a million downloads since its inception on SF.net. The SF.net team is proud to make Bochs, August 2004, project of the month. Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-08.php Home Page: http://bochs.sourceforge.net/ Project Page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/bochs/ September Project of the Month (POTM): Azureus --------------------------------------------------------- SourceForge.net's September 2004 project of the month is Azureus, a powerful Java-based BitTorrent client. Downloading a file, whether it's a large ISO (CD images), promotional MP3 from your favorite local band, Open Source application, or music video, is one of the most common uses of the Internet. Until recently, download servers that served these files were centralized. If the server was overloaded, offline, or 'Slashdotted', you were out of luck. BitTorrent, another SourceForge.net-hosted project, changed this by providing a way to download files in a decentralized way by leveraging, in a transparent fashion, hundreds of end-user computers. Using this method, the files are almost always available and the transfer speed is generally faster than a centralized solution, particularly with larger files. This project is immensely popular on SF.net. Besides being in our top 5 most active projects (out of 80,000+) it enjoys on average 75,000 downloads a day (Wow!). Azureus runs under Windows, Linux, OS X, among others and is licensed under the GPL. The SourceForge.net team is proud to make Azureus Project of the Month for Sepember. Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-09.php Home Page: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ Project Page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/ SF.net Documentation Improvements --------------------------------------------------------- SourceForge.net staff have started work to significantly improve the Site Documentation of SourceForge.net. This effort includes new content, rewrites of existing content, and layout improvements. Our new Site Docs may be seen at: https://sourceforge.net/docs/ Included within our initial roll-out of new documentation is a guide to using the Tracker system, used by most SourceForge.net projects for tracking support issues, bug reports and feature requests. This guide provides both step-by-step instructions for using the Tracker system, as well as extensive detail on best practices that will be useful for new projects and long-term Tracker users alike. This guide may be seen at: https://sourceforge.net/docs/E03/ The SourceForge.net team welcomes your feedback regarding our new documentation. Details on how to provide feedback may be found at: https://sourceforge.net/docs/A00/ As part of our ongoing effort to improve the usability of the site, new documentation will be released each month. Details of new document releases may be found on our Enhancements page, as seen at: https://sourceforge.net/docs/A03/ We hope that our new documentation offering will help everyone to make better use of the resources we provide and significantly improve site usability. 0. Intro 1. February Project of the Month (POTM): ClamWin 2. SF.net Site Improvements, Project Web Changes 3. SourceForge.net Subscriptions - Free T-shirt 4. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net User, I'm proud to announce that SourceForge.net has hit another major milestone. Last week, the site reached its one millionth registered user. While a symbolic number, it shows the continued growth and penetration of Open Source software and usage of SourceForge.net around the world. SF.net adds approximately 700 new registered users and 70 Open Source projects every single day. You can read the press release here: http://tinyurl.com/4mj5r I'd like to thank the team for their ongoing hard word in reaching this impressive milestone: Adi Alurkar, David Burley, Chris Conrad, Ari Gordon-Schlosberg, Jacob Moorman, Gareth Watts and Uriah Welcome. (Thanks guys). We have a lot of improvements on the way for you. Our CVS upgrade will be online in the third week of March. You will see a marked improvement in checkin and checkout times as we roll out additional systems. I know this is good news to the many of you who use CVS on a regular basis. The new SF.net stats system is also being rolled-out in March. This new system provides live stats (as opposed to batched) for downloads, page views, bandwidth, and many other services. All stats have been enhanced, and you will be able to see online graphs for many of the metrics, including a break down per package per project. It's impressive stuff, and I know you'll find it very useful. Finally, I want to let you know that this will be my final sitewide email. I've been managing SourceForge.net for the past five years, and have really enjoyed watching the site grow from its early beginnings into something all of us can be proud of. The site now serves 12 million page views to 190 countries and serves 1.2 million Open Source program downloads every single day. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I've enjoyed working with you and listening to your feedback. My new email is address is pat@pjm3.com if you would like to contact me. It's always great to hear from you. I'm leaving the site in trusted hands. Jeff Bates will be the interim day-to-day site director of SF.net and Jacob Moorman will continue to keep a watchful eye on all aspects of the site's operations as the Quality of Service Manager. Thank you. It's been fun. As always, Happy coding! Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net pat@pjm3.com February 2005 Project of the Month (POTM): ClamWin Free Antivirus ------------------------------------------------------------- Walk in to any computer store or electronic store and you will no doubt see an aisle dedicated to anti-spyware or anti-virus software. Viruses are a real problem in today's computing world and the problem has grown to such an extent that a cottage industry has appeared to try to combat all the virus variants introduced seemingly daily. Of course, if you run Windows, there is a real need to run some sort of anti-virus software. Whether it's the Operating System, the programs (IE or Outlook) or the size of its market share, Windows tends to attract virus writers. SourceForge.net's February project of the month, ClamWin, is an Open Source licensed virus checker for Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. It is a GUI front-end to the popular Clam AntiVirus engine which is also Open Source. ClamWin Free Antivirus comes with an easy installer and is licensed under the GPL (General Public License). The software has been a top project since its inception. ClamWin has had over a quarter of a million downloads in the past 10 months alone. The SourceForge.net team is proud to make ClamWin Project of the month. Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2005-01.php Home Page: http://www.clamwin.com/ Project Page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/ Site Enhancements --------------------------------------------------------- SourceForge.net staff are constantly working to improve the quality of our service offering. In recent months, a number of large enhancements have been made to the SourceForge.net site and developer services, as documented at: https://sourceforge.net/docs/A03/ The following is only important if you manage a project. If you don't manage a project, feel free to skip this section. In coming weeks, SourceForge.net staff will be performing the changes to the project shell, database and web services to improve maintainability and the performance of our service offering. We recognize that a number of these changes will require projects to reconfigure their web applications and modify their web content; we have merged all of these changes in to a single roll-out as that no further changes should be needed any time soon. Details regarding these changes may be found at: https://sourceforge.net/support/tracker.php?aid=1109940 This substantial listing of changes represents the first large set of changes made to the project web service in more than two years. While we have previously made changes to the equipment and software load, these functional and policy changes will significantly help to improve the reliability and maintainability of our project web service. Projects are encouraged to let us know directly if they have questions or concerns regarding this implementation. Inquiries should be directed to SourceForge.net staff via our confidential Donation Support queue at: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=1&atid=596964 Pending the completion of these new limitations and service enhancements, we will begin implementation planning for an additional set of service enhancements, focusing on providing brand new services related to our project shell, database and web services. We appreciate your patience and assistance during this transition of the project web services. 0. Intro 1. Cloudscape Challenge 2. December Project of the Month (POTM): TortoiseCVS 3. January Project of the Month (POTM): RSSOwl 4. SF.net Site Improvements, Project Web Changes 5. SourceForge.net Subscriptions - Free T-shirt 6. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net User, I just returned from an enjoyable Open Source conference in Hawaii called Trans-Pacific Open Source Software Conference (TPOSSCON), hosted by the Hawai`i Open Source Education Foundation (HOSEF: http://www.hosef.org ). Speakers included: Jon 'Maddog' Hall, Bruce Perens, Larry Rosen, and our very own Robin Miller, the editor-in-chief of OSTG, among others. The talks were enlightening, the setting was beautiful (Waikiki) and the conference was very professional, particularly for a first show (Good work Scott Belford). If you are looking to learn about Open Source in paradise, be sure to be on the look out for TPOSSCON in Jan 2006. Another conference, and a lot closer in terms of time, is LinuxWorld in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). This show runs from February 14th through 17th. I'll be speaking there, as well other members of OSTG, including Jeff 'Hemos' Bates, Rob 'CmrTaco' Malda from Slashdot.org, and Robin Miller. It won't be as warm as Hawaii, but it will definitely be a good show. If you do plan to attend the show, please let me know. Always good to meet other SF.net users. In the next sitewide, I'll discuss our millionth registered user, a big milestone for SF.net. If you have any questions/feedback about the site, please email me at pat@sf.net. I'm traveling most of this week, so my email reply may be slightly delayed, but I will reply. Thank you and Happy coding. Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net Pat@sf.net Cloudscape Challenge ------------------------------------------------------------- Only a few days left to test your Java skills.. We are giving out ten 40GB iPods and 50 (count 'em) SourceForge.net T-shirts. Entries have to be in by the end of January 2005. Cloudscape, by IBM, is a powerful Java-based SQL database that sports a small footprint (a few megabytes). Since it's Java based, it's cross-platform. IBM recently open sourced the database under the name Derby. The contest is easy -- simply download the database and our special data files and answer the question we email you (it's a simple SQL exercise). If you are able to get the correct answer from the datafile you'll be placed in a drawing. What are the odds? Likely pretty good. It depends on how many people enter the contest and have the right answer. Only a few days left. Enter now. Note: You have to be a U.S. or Canadian (except Quebec) resident to enter (sorry, blame our legal folks). To enter go here: http://sourceforge.net/cloudscape_contest.php December 2004 Project of the Month (POTM): TortoiseCVS ------------------------------------------------------------- CVS, the Concurrent Versions System is the dominant open-source version control system. CVS is useful for everyone from individual developers to large, distributed teams. The software is used extensively on SourceForge.net and elsewhere around the web. Besides the command-line, there are a number of front ends to CVS that make day-to-development easier. The CVS client SF.net staff recommend for MS Windows users is TortoiseCVS. TortoiseCVS lets users work with files directly from Windows Explorer. Features include: graphical UI, tight integration with SSH, and context-menu interactivity. As of (Dec 2004), TortoiseCVS has had over 600,000 downloads and is one of the top projects on the site. The SourceForge.net team is proud to make TortoiseCVS December 2004 project of the month. Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-12.php Home Page: http://www.tortoisecvs.org/ Project Page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/tortoisecvs/ January 2005 Project of the Month (POTM): RSSOwl ------------------------------------------------------------- RSS ("Really Simple Syndication") is a document specification for publishing headlines/content to other sites and RSS-aware applications. While available as a format for many years, RSS usage has risen dramatically during the past 12 months. SourceForge.net's January 2005 Project of the month is RSSOwl, a RSS aggregator. It allows a user to gather the latest headlines from their favorite news sources all in one place for easy viewing including the New York Times, BBC, SourceForge.net, Slashdot.org, and thousands of other sites and blogs. RSSOwl currently runs under Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. The software reached a major milestone last month (Dec 2004) with a 1.0 release. With over 60,000 downloads, RSSOwl is one of SF.net's most active projects. The SourceForge.net team is proud to make RSSOwl our January 2005 project of the month. Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2005-01.php Home Page: http://www.rssowl.org/ Project Page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/rssowl/ Site Enhancements --------------------------------------------------------- SourceForge.net staff are constantly working to improve the quality of our service offering. SOURCEFORGE.NET UPDATE - 2004-04-22

0. Intro 1. April Project of the Month: BZFlag 2. Effective Promotion of your Open Source Project 3. Software Map Enhancements 4. SourceForge.net Subscriptions - Free T-shirt 5. SourceForge Enterprise at Work 6. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net developer, There's never a dull moment managing SourceForge.net. It has been a busy April. I would like to share with you two things that occurred during the past two weeks. Approximately 10 days ago we received a lot of coverage regarding a DMCA request we received from Apple Computer regarding a product called Playfair, a project that removes encryption from Apple's AAC digital music format. The issue was extensively written-about by our sister Web site slashdot.org and other Apple Mac-related sites. The project is now offline. When the SF.NET team receives a DMCA request, we follow our policy, which is outlined here: http://tinyurl.com/396x7 Typically, when we receive a DMCA request, the project at hand is removed for a minimum of 10 days. The project admin, however, has the ability to make a counter-claim, which can bring the project back online in short order. In the case of Playfair, the admin decided to not make a counter-claim, hence the project is still offline. Perhaps the most interesting news, which generated the greatest press, was the release of Open Source software on SourceForge.net by Microsoft. It is the first time Microsoft has ever released code in this manner. The company released the code using a valid Open Source (OSI-approved) license. We applaud Microsoft for releasing code to the Open Source community. We hope this is just the beginning of its Open Source software releases. You can view the press here: http://tinyurl.com/2w5xz The project is located here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wix/ Thank you for using and supporting SourceForge.net. If you have any questions or issues with SourceForge.net, please feel free to email me directly at pat@sf.net. Thank you. Happy coding. Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net email: pat@sf.net Project of the month: BZFlag --------------------------------------------------------- In the beginning there was Pong, Asteroids, and PacMan. One game that really stood out, from a technical perspective, was Battlezone. Launched in the early 1980s, Battlezone was a 3D, vector-based game in which a player drove a tank around a grid shooting other tanks and avoiding incoming shells. Over time, the concept of the game was ported to faster hardware and many operating systems. The most popular derivative of that game concept, BZFlag, is SourceForge.net's April 2004 project of the month. BZFlag is a fantastic game. It's multiplayer, it has great graphics, it runs on all major platforms (Irix, Linux, BSD, Windows, Mac OS X, etc.), it has a fanatical following, and it is, of course, completely Open Source. With over 812,000 copies of BZFlag downloaded from SF.net, BZFlag is one popular game. Ranked in the top 50 projects on the site (out of 82,000), the SF.net team is proud to make BZFlag project of the month. Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-04.php Project page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/bzflag/ Home page: http://bzflag.sourceforge.net/ Effective Promotion of your Open Source Project --------------------------------------------------------- This Saturday, April 24, we'll have an IRC discussion with OSDN's editor in chief Robin 'Roblimo' Miller about how to get the media spotlight to shine on your project. Robin recently wrote a NewsForge article titled "Getting good PR for your Open Source project": http://trends.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=04/04/07/1549228 The (moderated) chat will be at 2000 UTC (4 p.m. EDT, 1 p.m. PDT, 1700 GMT) on IRC server events.oftc.net, #promo, Saturday, April 24, 2004. If you are online at that time, please drop by and say hello to Robin. It will be a very interesting chat. (OSDN is the parent company of SourceForge.net.) Software Map Enhancements --------------------------------------------------------- All SourceForge.net-hosted projects have the option of being listed in the SourceForge.net Software Map. The Software Map is a tree-based category system allowing both end users and developers to easily find projects matching particular criteria. The Software Map is the most direct route to find software to suit a specific purpose, such as a new email client or CRM software, from the more than 70,000 projects hosted on SourceForge.net. We have recently made a number of significant enhancements to the SourceForge.net Software Map, including better filtering based on category selection and options to sort project listings. Most importantly, we have added integration with the project search facility, allowing you to perform a more-targeted search from within the Software Map. The SourceForge.net team is always working to improve the SourceForge.net site and service offerings to better meet your needs. A list of our recent enhancements may be found at: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=19242&group_id=1 Want to support our efforts to expand and improve the site? Consider becoming a SourceForge.net subscriber: http://sourceforge.net/subscription.php SourceForge.net Subscriptions - Free T-shirt -------------------------------------------- SF.net subscribers receive a full array of exciting features, including priority technical support. We have extended our offer for a free T-shirt (from ThinkGeek.com) when you sign up for an annual SourceForge.net subscription. Sign up today for a subscription and help support SourceForge.net: http://sourceforge.net/subscription.php On a related note, ThinkGeek.com (our sister site) is having a free shipping offer for the next two weeks on orders over $35. If you haven't ordered your green laser pointer or caffeinated soap, this is a good time to do so. ;-) SourceForge Enterprise at Work --------------------------------------------------------- As a SourceForge.net user, you know how SourceForge.net helps you collaborate with colleagues around the world on both personal and professional Open Source software projects. Many companies, especially those with large distributed development teams, face many of the same communication, collaboration, and coordination challenges as the Open Source community. If you're in a large company, you may want to take a look at SourceForge Enterprise Edition. VA Software, the parent company of SourceForge.net, has helped scores of companies break down the barriers of distributed development with SourceForge Enterprise Edition, an enterprise-grade version of the SourceForge.net Web site. You can learn more at http://www.vasoftware.com. If you are a CIO or CTO, set up an exploratory discussion with VA's executive technical management to discuss your distributed development challenges and goals. A quick email to kbaker@vasoftware.com is all it takes to get started. 0. Intro 1. SF.net Site Improvements 2. March Project of the Month (POTM): 3. SourceForge.net Subscriptions - Free T-shirt 4. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net User, Greetings and thanks for reading the latest news from SourceForge.net. The last month has been particularly exciting for me, coming into working more directly with SourceForge.net, and I'm excited about the path that is laid out before us. Since you last heard from us, we've added two new developers on to the project, and are in the process of finalizing another tech support person as well. We're are committed to following through on the promises that we made, giving the community the support that it needs to develop great open source code -- and we're also planning some (good) surprises for the future, so keep your eyes peeled. As I write this, we are in the process of syncing up the last of the new CVS servers; our Site Status page (http://sf.net/docs/A04/) update gives you the latest information, but I'm very happy to say that those machines will be coming online very soon. As well, we are finalizing launch of pervasive search (http://sf.net/subscription.php). Lastly, with a few bugs still outstanding, the new statistics code is very close to launching as well. I believe that these features will be a great boon to our developers and users of the site, and as someone who does both, I'm eagerly awaiting them. As well, we've also been fixing some project permissions system issues that have caused usability problems in the past. If you've encountered those issues before, I think you'll be happy with the fixes. Lastly, the team has been doing a lot of work and thinking in regards to the usability of SourceForge.net; specifically the UI. As we continue to move forward on this work, we'll be updating you, our users, in regards to that work -- but I'm excited to see the site moving forward. Jeff- Jeff Bates Acting Site Director, SourceForge.net hemos@slashdot.org March 2005 Project of the Month (POTM): OGRE ------------------------------------------------------------- OGRE is a multiplatform 3D engine with a focus on strong design, clean implementation, extensibility, and maintainability. It adheres to object-oriented principles and clean coding standards, while providing a blisteringly fast 3D renderer with support for all the latest hardware features of DirectX 9 and OpenGL, including support for all low- and high-level shader languages, multiple shadow techniques (including custom shader-based techniques), and HDR. SOURCEFORGE.NET UPDATE - 2003-12-09
EDITION
12/11/2003 07:17 PM
0. Intro (Donation System rollout!) 1. Nov - Dec Projects of the Month 2. Stats and Top Projects Dear SourceForge.net developer, I''m pleased to announce that SourceForge.net just celebrated its four-year anniversary. A lot of things have matured on SourceForge.net and within the Open Source community during the past 48 months. SF.net has grown from just over 1000 projects at our launch in 1999 to over 75,000 today. The site has grown from just a few page views a day to over 7 million every 24 hours. To view a brief history of SF.NET, take a look at the WayBackMachine section that archive.org provides: http://tinyurl.com/xjti. There you can view the site from different slices of time. During last months update, I announced SF.NET donation program, which allows people to help cover of the costs of running SourceForge.net. It has been a success and I would like to thank everyone who has given to SourceForge.net and welcome further donations. You can view contributors here at: http://sourceforge.net/supporters.php In this update, we are improving on this donation system. Today we are launching a system that allows users to not only donate to SF.NET, but also to their favorite projects. Many project admins need money to help cover the costs of the equipment they use and/or time they have spent developing their code. This built-in system will allow Open Source projects to generate supplemental income from our 750,000 registered users. Project admins can decide if they want to give a portion of their proceeds to non-profits that support Open Source, such as the Open Source Initiative, Python, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Gnome Foundation, etc. If you are a project admin, the SF.NET team will be sending you an additional email to you explaining this process in greater detail. Projects will need to ''opt-in'' in order to accept donations. Besides projects accepting donations, users on SF.NET will be able to do so, as well. Again this is an ''opt-in'' feature. Starting today, if a user replies to your email with helpful information, responds to a support request, or is just overly helpful to you, you can now give him/her a few dollars to show your appreciation. Given how much time one can save with the guidance of a knowledgeable developer, this new system is a good way for everyone to win. If projects and users receive money for doing what they love: developing and supporting software, this could prove to be a successful business model that in turn could allow them to provide their services full time. It will be interesting to see how many people open their wallets to support the software they use everyday. I''ll report in future sitewide updates how the system is doing and whether this experiment is a success. If you see a ($) next to a users name, it means that they have opted-in to receive money. Clicking on the dollar sign brings up their donation page. A few other tidbits of information about this new donation system: SF.NET is taking a 5% piece of the transaction fee. It is our hope that this small percentage will help us finance the donation system and help cover some of the other costs of running the site. In releasing this new donation system, we are also updating our privacy statement and terms of service document. Please take some time to view these new documents. You can access them from the footer on any SourceForge.net page. We have added wording about the new donation program and additional text to make these legal documents more readable. About two years ago, we updated our Terms of Service and a few people had some concerns. You can read all about it here on Slashdot.org: http://tinyurl.com/xtgx There shouldn''t be any significant concern on these new docs. They are not substantially different nor scarier then the last revision. There are no ''gotchas''. No evil plot. We are not selling your personal information to anyone, etc. After reading the documents, if you still have concerns about them, feel free to email me (pat@sf.net) or submit a support request on the site. Thank you. Happy Holidays to you and Happy Coding. Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net pat@sourceforge.net Nov - Dec Projects of the Month --------------------------------------------- November''s Project of the month: FileZilla FileZilla, a secure FTP client, is an excellent open-source success story. The program was started two years ago in Germany by a computer science student named Tim Kosse. While working on his degree, Tim began writing a simple FTP program for a class assignment. After the class was completed, Tim continued to improve upon the code base. Eventually, he chose to host it on SourceForge.net. With feedback and support from the SourceForge.net community, Tim''s code and FileZilla''s feature set continued to improve. Today, the program has a thriving user base and a large community of devotees around the world. The project is now ranked in the top 15 projects (out of 70,000) on the site and has more than 4,000 downloads daily. 0. Intro 1. SF.NET Support Update 2. DevChannel Launch 3. NNTP Beta Continues 4. WebSphere on Compile Farm 5. Site Statistics --- Sponsored by: Buy Holiday Geek Toys Now! Thinkgeek is the holiday shopping mecca for geeks, technophiles, and anybody who enjoys computers, gadgets, and just plain old fun stuff. Whether you're looking to shop for the new geek in your life, or if you're looking to finally get the gifts you actually WANT this year, Thinkgeek is your one-stop-shop. http://www.thinkgeek.com/sf/ ---- Hello SourceForge.net user, Happy Holidays! It's been quite a year. We just had our 3rd year anniversary of SF.NET's existence and in the past 12 months we've added 225,000 registered users and 22,000 new Open Source projects (525,000 Users and 52,000 projects total). It's great to see that the community continues to grow. We've moved. You may or may not have noticed, but we physically moved last month. SourceForge.net has migrated to a new Cable & Wireless facility in Santa Clara, California (formally Exodus). Besides the shinny new racks, power and bandwidth, we have consolidated all our OSDN sister sites under one roof (Slashdot.org, Freshmeat.net, Linux.com, OSDN.com, Thinkgeek.com, etc). This move makes it easier for our Sys Admins to get their hands around all 250+ servers (all of OSDN) which use to be spread out over two coasts in the United States. December 2002's SF.NET project of the month is phpMyAdmin. Please check out the interview we did with them. Good stuff. http://sourceforge.net/pom_1202.php Our IBM DB2 transition continues to move forward. We will have SF.NET fully converted to the database in early 2003. On a related note, today we are announcing 3 new IBM WebSphere application servers on the SF.NET compile farm. This will allow you to test out any J2EE applications you might have. Instructions to access the compile farm are below in this email. On behalf of the SF.NET team, I want to wish you and your family very Happy Holidays. We are looking forward to working with you to make SourceForge.net and the Open Source Community even more successful in 2003. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me directly at pat@sf.net. Thank you. Pat- Patrick McGovern Director, SourceForge.net email: pat@sf.net 1. SF.NET Support Update ---------------------------------------- The SourceForge.net team has recently completed a set of planning sessions for 2003 goals. We have incorporated much of the feedback received during the 2002 year in to these goals, and are quite excited about the upcoming enhancements to the SourceForge.net site and services. We welcome your continued feedback. The SourceForge.net team may be contacted by submitting a Support Request at: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=1&atid=200001 All SourceForge.net-hosted projects which make use of our VHOST services must update their DNS configuration to reflect our new IP address
