Return to Return of the King

Return to Return of the King 01/25/2004 09:30 AM
(I just blogged this at BlogCritics.org) We went to see Return of the King for the second time last night because our 13-year-old wanted to see it for his third time. My pre-VCR generation has trouble being entertained by a movie more than once, but there are exceptions. Lord of the Rings is one: Giant trolls, gargantuan elephants, catapults firing heads, fierce bad guys with faces made out of cookie dough, fire-tipped battering rams, stirring music, flying dragons, all in one scene. What more do you want in a movie? Even though it was my second time, I still...

Swiss Army iPod

Swiss Army iPod 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Apple are currently marketing some clever add-ons for the iPod. Belkin have produced a clever media reader, called the er.. Belkin Media Reader. The device allows you to transfer files from memory cards to your iPod. At 90 it's priced a bit steep, but if you're out and about taking lots of high res digital snaps, you'd easily spend more on a couple of 256MB memory cards. Other interesting add-ons include the Belkin Voice Recorder and the Belkin FireWire Battery. I also have it on good word that Griffi n Technology's iFM will be shipping at the end of the month. It's a bummer that the iTrip is not available in the UK, but I'm looking forward to having a good quality FM radio with the iPod.

Swiss Prefer To Be Dumb, But Healthy,

Swiss Prefer To Be Dumb, But Healthy,
And Less Well Connected
06/14/2004 06:00 PM
Last year, we wrote about a somewhat questionable study that suggested that 3G wireless base stations made people feel sick - but also made them smarter. Now, because of that study (which was greatly questioned once the details showed very little evidence to back up its main assertions), the Swiss government is contemplatin g a ban on 3G technologies. The argument, of course, is they want to make sure their citizens remain healthy, but if they really believe that study, doesn't it mean they also want their citizens to remain dumber?

Lessig and Doctorow, Truth and Fiction,
on Swiss Wi-Fi

Lessig and Doctorow, Truth and Fiction,
on Swiss Wi-Fi
12/13/2003 01:53 PM
Cory Doctorow, true-life rights defender and novelist, exposes a chunk of his work-in-progress, while pointing to Larry Lessig, true-life true-intent-of-copyright defender, who rants: Cory's notes the anti-openness and generally confusing nature of using Wi-Fi in Switzerland, a country that revels in expense in general, in an excerpt from his newest work-in-progress, based on his experience in Switzerland. He points to Lessig's post about ironically having the worst possible time connecting at the World Summit on the Information Society. In both cases, they're talking mostly about a single provider, Swiss Telecom, which doesn't appear to want "drop-in" users. I was recently in Whistler, B.C., a ski resort community with a township around it, where there are now two competing ubiquitous Wi-Fi networks. Curse my luck, the condo unit my wife and I rented could barely receive the signal of both--not strong enough to be useful. But both services also required out-of-band connections: you had to go to some store or kiosk to purchase specific periods of time. So instead of Wi-Fi, I skied, and apres-ski, I went to Internet cafes, where I spent a total of about US$8 over three days for a couple of hours of access....
