Computer Security Shifting Metaphors:
It's An Airport, Not A Fortress

Computer Security Shifting Metaphors:
It's An Airport, Not A Fortress
11/04/2003 04:07 AM
While some may laugh at anyone spending so much time trying to come up with a metaphor for computer security, it does often influence how people think about certain problems and what solutions they're likely to create. So, it's interesting to read one suggestion that we need to stop thinking of computer security like the machine is a "fortress" and everyone needs to be kept out. Instead, they suggest, it's like an airport - where you let everyone in, but restrict them to certain areas and have security checks along the way. Does this mean I'm going to have to take off my shoes the next time I visit a "secure" site?

From time-shifting to media-shifting 04/06/2005 12:28 PM
It's great to be able to time-shift media, but more and more lately I wish I could media-shift as well. Consider this fifty-minut e interview1 with Jim Gray, on MSDN's Channel 9. Why haven't I watched it yet? Not because I lack interest, or time, but because the content isn't available in a format that suits the kind of time I have. In this case, the format would be audio, and the kind of time would be walking-, jogging-, or driving-time. ...

Microsoft Acquires Giant, Plans Antispyware Release: Giant's site has essentially been replaced by a big press release. I didn't use any of their products, but they included Spam Inspector, which I hear was quite good. I wonder how many of Bill's four million emails a day it could head off?

Microsoft today announced its acquisition of New York–based Giant Company Software Inc.[...]

Microsoft will use the acquisition to create an antispyware solution for users of Windows 2000 and later. Key personnel from Giant will join Microsoft to make this possible. A beta release of the as-yet-unnamed product is planned within one month.

More information in this CNN article, including information on Microsoft's plans to charge for the product.

Wardriving, Wireless Networks, and the Law
Wireless networks are exploding in popularity, but are difficult to secure. Locating insecure networks & advertising their locations has become a sport known as "wardriving". We examine the Pen Register Act, the Wiretap Act, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Computer Fraud & Abuse Act to evaluate criminal & civil liability which may apply to wardriving. Panelists: Steve Schroeder, CCIPS consultant; Simon Byers, AT&T; Kevin Bankston, EFF
