iPOD: where will it stop ?

iPOD: where will it stop ? 03/30/2005 09:51 AM
iPOD ... I don’t think a single day goes by without an article about the innocent player from Apple to be published. In 2001, iPOD revolutionized the music industry, hard-disks and took Mac sales with 5% higher on the desktop market. But how much of this success is because of the player’s technical characteristics and how much is because of marketing? iPOD has undisputable advantages: it’s easy to use, has a high capacity (it was the first player with a hard-disk), has an innovative design and the list could go on.

Critics say that is heavy, fragile compared to other flash players, with a limited number of functions compared to the capacity of the hard-disk, lacks a FM tuner and again the list could go on. The controversy can go on for days, but after all the technical issues are exhausted, iPOD supporters will bring the final argument: good or bad, iPod has 85% of the MP3 player market and what’s more, since 2001 no company succeeded in dethroning it.

Stop the music

Stop the music 04/09/2004 04:02 PM

I’ve been viewing a lot of sites while reviewing for BlogSnob and I’m a bit annoyed. What’s with all the music on people’s sites? Is this 1998 again?

In case you were thinking about having your favorite tune load up when people visit your site—don’t. It takes a long time to load. The sound quality generally stinks. It crashes some browsers. And most of all, your musical tastes are not likely the same as all of your visitors. I have my own musical selections, thank you. I don’t need to hear yours.

Apple to stop CeBIT presentation of iPod
shuffle clone
03/14/2005 06:26 PM
After the company Luxpro banished its "Super shuffle" from its CeBIT stand on Friday, the iPod Shuffle lookalike again put in an appearance on Saturday. "It's not identical with the iPod Shuffle, it's better" - that at least is the way one of the people presenting the device for the Taiwanese company sees it (Hall 24, Stand C24-1). Under the name Super shuffle Luxpro is presenting an MP3 player with Flash Memory that at first sight cannot be distinguished from the iPod Shuffle.

Urged by Apple's lawyers Luxpro had taken the player out of its show cases on Friday, only to put it back in again on Saturday for the benefit of the weekend visitors to the CeBIT event. Who, moreover, did seem to show an interest in the device: The player offers besides all functions present in the genuine iPod shuffle an FM tuner, a WMA playing capability (according to the manufacturer also with digital rights management) and voice recording - only AAC support has to be dispensed with.

When you're in the business of writing about the iPod for fun and profit, the question most often thrown your way is: "How do I get my music off the iPod and onto my computer?" The difficulty in answering such a question is that it may be born of less-than-honorable intent, but given that I'm asked the question with such regularity, I've decided to point the way in the hope that it will help the virtuous among us. Those bad apples intent on stealing music will find a way to do it with or without my help.

Market research firm Jupiter Research announced that it expects MP3 player shipments to continue to grow almost 50 percent per year for the next 3 years, with this year's shipments to top out around 3.5 million. The company said that demand for hard drive-based MP3 players like the iPod will outstrip demand for lower capacity flash memory-based models beginning next year. 2006 is the year that Jupiter Research said MP3 players will establish "a critical mass of users that will help spur digital music sales." The comments come as part of a new report entitled "Portable Music Device Forecast, 2002 - 2008."

The iPod is proving a colossal hit on the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony's own turf. The tiny white machine is catching on as a fashion statement and turning into a cultural icon in Japan, much the same way it won a fanatic following in the United States. Although Apple doesn't release regional sales figures, six of the top eight selling music players in Japan are iPod models, according to a market research company.
