Why open distribution is the real
promise of open source
06/16/2004 11:32 AM The White Rabbit has beckoned us down the wrong rabbit hole. Much has
been made about the open source revolution, and with good reason. The
open source development model produces superior software. But, in my
estimation, the real promise of open source lies not in open source,
but rather in open distribution. Here's why ...

07/27/2004 03:53 AMI have purchased a total of 3 songs from iTunes and probably a 100
from the Music Match network which I have loaded on my iPod was it
difficult, not at all in my opinion. I just had to be smart. I like
the idea of not having to go through hoops to move the music to the
iPod so Real may get some of my business. But If I was a betting man I
would wager that Apple's legal team will be trying to shut this down.

Real Networks To Launch Own Copy
Protection Store
01/06/2004 03:13 AMClearly, we don't have enough incompatible formats for music download
stores, because Real Networks has decided they can make a real dent in
the marketplace by offering
yet another me-too music download store - but with
increased copy protection that no one supports. Thus, you can
download songs from Real, but you won't be able to play them on just
about any digital music player right now. How does this benefit
consumers? That part isn't clear.

Off to Sony Open Forum tomorrow
01/10/2004 06:12 AMI'm off again to the Sony Open Forum tomorrow. It's an annual
event. The main event is Sony's sponsorship of a golf tournament, but
there is also a small forum where Chairman Idei invites executives of
Sony and several other people to discuss some of the key topics for
the year. Last year I was invited to
speak about the future of Japan. This year I'm going to be talking
about media consumption and the future of media. My talk will kick off
a discussion session. The conference itself is not public, but I'm
assuming my comments are. I've put my
talking notes on my wiki and Kevin Marks, Roger Wood and danah boyd have contributed some
thoughts on a page about media consumption. The actual talk isn't
for a few more days so any thoughts you might have would be greatly
appreciated. Please add them to the wiki. Thanks!

Law Enforcement Says Open Wi-Fi Networks
Used for Crime
03/19/2005 02:24 AM
Criminals use Wi-Fi to hide their tracks: But not very
always successfully. Some criminals aren't very bright and are using
networks adjacent to where they live and having stolen goods shipped
to them despite using other people's networks. Others are more clever
and their use of random Wi-Fi networks prevents them being tracked
down by law enforcement as they engage in death threats, fraud, and
cracking.
The article also lumps together unsecured business and home networks
with free Wi-Fi networks: "Ms. Hubert [the supervisory special agent
in charge of the Cyber Task Force at the F.B.I. field office in
Buffalo] says one group of hackers she has been tracking has regularly
frequented a local chain of Wi-Fi-equipped tea and coffee shops to
help cover its tracks."
I welcome this article because there has been a lot of speculative
coverage before this as to whether Wi-Fi was being used in this
manner. Now we have a number of agencies citing actual cases in
progress or already in court.
The SBC number is a little odd, by the way: the spokesperson says that
SBC has shipped one million Wi-Fi routers to its customers with
encryption turned on. But I saw a number months ago that said that SBC
had shipped nearly three million routers to customers (out of a
population of five million DSL users at that time). Did two of the
three million get shipped with encryption off?

Beyond Markets and Firms: The Emergence of Open Source
Networks by Federico Iannacci and Eve Mitleton–Kellyhttp://ww
w.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_5/iannacci/Abstract By Author:Although hierarchies and
markets (i.e., autonomy) have been subject to extensive study,
heterarchies represent different modalities of organizing that have
been little researched. Drawing on complexity theory and the main
features of complex evolving systems (CES), this paper sets out to
remedy this imbalance by showing that heterarchies feature highly
decentralized and relatively stable interactions which are coordinated
through an emergent process of parametric adaptation. Implications in
terms of learning are discussed casting a new light on the delicate
issue of motivation in Open Source software development.

Recently I've been working on a project that might be of interest to
other Advogato users: CIA, a system for tracking commit messages (and
eventually other things) from any open source project. When new code
is committed, the news instantly shows up on a web site, an RSS feed,
and an IRC channel.
Unlike other similar projects that focus on bringing one project's
commits to only its developers, CIA lets anyone see what development
is happening right now, regardless of where or what for.

12/22/2004 01:46 AMPervasive networks—a ubiquitous “fabric” of computing, information,
entertainment, and telemetry capability tied together by high-speed
wired and wireless networks—are emerging from a flurry of new
communication technologies now being used in home and office networks.
Though communications carriers do not offer this type of continuous
communication as a service today, the piece parts are already in
place. [PRWEB Dec 20, 2004]

Yes, CNN.com link but a damned weird story. XM Discovers The Internet
XM Discovers The Internet
09/15/2004 01:39 PMWell, it took them quite a while, but it appears that the folks at XM
Radio have finally realized that internet radio might be a bit of
competition for them, and have decided to
start offering an
internet radio service themselves. They offer discounts to those
who also subscribe to their satellite radio service, but you have to
wonder if someone at XM Radio is slapping his or her head realizing
here was a way to offer radio
without having to spend so much
initially on launching satellites, ensuring that the company won't
make money for many, many years. In the meantime, it's worth noting
that this is the same XM Radio that just
pulled
a receiver off the market because (gasp!) they realized people
could record their stations to computers, and they were afraid that
the RIAA would sue them. Apparently, the folks at XM Radio haven't
heard of
stream
ripping for online radio stations.
Update: As a few people
have pointed out, this new service, more than fear over ripping, may
explain why XM pulled the service that let people move the satellite
service to their PCs. Again, though, this seems short-sighted. Why
not give your customers as many options as possible?

06/10/2004 11:38 AM
Reading The Times' Circuits
section invariably causes a single metallic tear to vent from my
society-integration hardware, wetting my dome. Sometimes it's from the
cognitive trauma of trying to parse whether or not they're even
talking about technology anymore or just repurposing old articles from
the Steamer Tramp Watch column or something, but sometimes --
rare, precious times -- I get misty as I watch them discover something
for the first time, as a retarded child waking from a coma would
marvel at a flower, or toilet paper, fawning over and cuddling and
gleefully showing the new technology to us. This week's blissful
bursting into awareness? Motherfucking USB. Awwww. (Thanks
to the Circuits team's case worker, Jeff.)
