The Icewear covers for the iPod mini are quite attractive, are they not? Made from the same silicon used in divers' masks, the Icewear covers the entire unit except for the controls, which it leaves accessible to touch, and the screen. Oh, and the top and some of the bottom. So quite a bit of it is open, really. Still, though, the ribbed sides and grippy edges should extend the life of your little beauty by quite a long time.

Tokyo-based Tunewear on Wednesday announced four new accessories for use with the iPod or iPod mini: Prie Hook cases, Poptune removable wrappers, Waterwear water-resistant cases and aluminum clips for the company's Icewear mini cases. Prie Hook, which will ship in mid-January for US$54, features a large metal hook that you can use to attach the leather case to a belt loop or other spot. A flap at the bottom opens for charging the MP3 player in a dock; slots at the top and bottom allow access to all the ports. It's available in two models, one that fits all 4G iPods -- including the iPod photo -- and one that fits the iPod mini; the hook on the latter doesn't swivel 360 degrees, however.

Japanese company Tunewear has announced its Prie line of cases for the iPod mini. They come in four colors -- key lime, ruby pink, canvas gray and jet black -- with a choice of two front panel designs, Open Face or Classic Face. The former holds the iPod mini in place and features a flap that opens to reveal the front of the MP3 player. The latter covers its entire body, except for click wheel and control access, and covers its LCD screen with clear vinyl. Both front panel designs still allow access to the headphone jack and dock connector. In addition, you have two strap style choices, one that includes a long strap and a short one and another that offers the long strap and a built-in loop on the back of the case for attaching to your belt or bag. No pricing was offered by Tunewear.

Griffin Technology Inc. on Thursday announced the release of their AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60 feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

shuffle_clip.jpg imageGood morning, job seekers. Who here thinks the iPod shuffle's end cap is just begging to be lost? Why not invest in something a bit more practical, like this aluminum end cap with clip from Tunewear. It may only be a minute difference, but having your shuffle clipped to your jacket or bag sounds a lot better than just letting it dangle on a lanyard or sit in your pocket. And while Tunewear has only announced the clip in Japan, they do sell their products here, so I expect we'll see it soon enough. Since it's aluminum, you can pretend your little flash player is a PowerPod shuffle, too.

Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

iPod, iPod mini
08/13/2004 07:17 AM
Griffin Technology has introduced RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the 1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

itrip_mini_1.jpg imageGood news for everyone that pre-ordered an iTrip mini, the FM transmitter from Griffin Technology that is designed specifically to work with the iPod mini -- it's shipping a month early. How often does that happen? Well, I mean, I guess there was that time when the solids residue from that batch of 5,6-MeO-MIPT recrystallized faster than we expected from the EtOAc/hexane, but I guess, yeah, that was sort of a different trip altogether.

Griffin Technology on Friday announced that it is shipping its iTrip mini, an FM transmitter designed to work with the iPod mini. The US$39.99 device attaches to the top of the iPod mini and enables users to play their music through nearby FM receivers in cars, homes and elsewhere. The iTrip mini can broadcast on any available frequency, and is tuned from the iPod mini itself. It uses no batteries, drawing power from the iPod mini, and powers itself off automatically when not in use. When Griffin first announced the iTrip mini they said it would ship in July, so this news comes a month earlier than expected.

SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.

Real ships guerrilla DRM for the iPod

Real ships guerrilla DRM for the iPod 07/26/2004 01:59 AM
Real Networks have reverse-engineered Apple's iPod and written a player for its DRM "Helix" format, which they're giving away. This means that you'll be able to play the Helix files you buy from Real on your Apple iPod.

I'm cautiously glad about this. It's the right idea: tech vendors should be writing tools that allow anyone to play anything on anything: it's insane to own an Apple "record player" that only plays Apple "records" -- meaning that if you buy your records from Real, you need to buy another record player.

My only disappointment is that Real is engaged in the same behaviour: Real's records only play on players licensed by Real: it would be much more customer-friendly if Real went into the business of providing us with music in a patent-free, open standard that could be implemented by anyone. Mostly nontechnical today, so let’s do the geeky stuff first: Chet Haase talks up ImageIO and he’s right, it’s coolio, I’ve used it too. Greg Reimer draws a persuasive analogy between conspiracy theories and Internet Worms. Then, Chris Calkins gives us an almost-all-pin k day including a huge picture of a terrific flower; definitely my kind of stuff. Jason Schroeder has a wonderful I-hate-airlines rant, every frequent traveler in the world will be saying “Amen!” And to end the week on a light note, here’s a posting reproduced without permission from the Sun internal Mac Users mailing list: “And it came to pass in those days that they did iPodify their bimmers, yea even unto the those of them that had already more toys than they knew what do to with...” I mean, if iPodifying bimmers isn't a sign of the End Times, well, I just don't know what is.
