Distributed Component Object Model
(DCOM) for Windows 98 v1.3
08/18/2004 01:30 AM

Microsoft is pleased to announce the general availablilty of DCOM98 for Microsoft Windows® 98, version 1.3. DCOM98 1.3 extends the support for Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) for Microsoft Windows 98. The DCOM wire protocol transparently provides support for reliable, secure, and efficient communication between COM components such as ActiveX® controls, scripts, and Java applets residing on different machines in a LAN, a WAN, or on the Internet. With DCOM, your application can be distributed across locations that make the most sense to you and to the application.

Ssssh -- don't tell anyone, especially Microsoft enterprise salesmen, but COM can now be enjoyed by Mac OS X programmers. I am being quiet about it because obviously, Apple does not want anyone to know. Mac OS X has been able to do COM for quite some time. The thing is, no one has really broadcast this -- until now. You can write COM components that have the potential to run on both Windows and Mac OS X with no code changes.

Going Deep: Windows, NT Object Manager 06/05/2005 11:09 PM
Almost everything you do on your PC requires the assistance of NT's Object Manager. The Object Manager is a shared resource; a subsystem upon which all other executive kernel subsystems rely on to get their jobs done. That said, among NT's kernel components, the OM receives the least amount of attention. Well, not anymore. Charles has a brief chat with Adrian Marinescu, a senior developer who spends most of his time fine tuning and evolving the Object Manager.

Longhorn moving away from COM and DCOM 01/28/2004 11:23 AM
Don Box, a Microsoft software architect in charge of Indigo, the part of Longhorn (the next Windows OS) that involves the ways programs communicate, spoke about Indigo at the Developing Software for the Future Microsoft Platform conference in London. Microsoft has worked with Component Object Model (COM) and Distributed Compound Object Model (DCOM) in its operating systems to this point. These processes allow objects to be sent between programs in the OS, and were touted as the best option for many years. However, object-oriented programming has taken a downturn with the increased use of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and Microsoft is working hard at keeping up.

Town of Bourton's miniature model has a
miniature model of the model (and so on)
12/23/2003 11:30 PM
Mark Bourne says: So my wife Elizabeth and I are googling up possibilities for our long trip to England next year. Checking out London sites and so on. An acquaintance suggested staying for a few days in the Cotswolds, a scenic Middle Earthy region west of London. That's how we found a page about the town of Bourton.

You just gotta love this text, which blends Ye Olde Scepter'd Isle with sci-fi gee-wizardry:

You will probably have noticed that when you take a branch from certain trees (some conifers for example), the branch looks like a miniature version of the tree, and when you break a piece off the branch, that looks like a tree too. Mathematicians call this property self-similarity.

Bourton has a wonderful example of self-similarity: it contains a 1/10 scale model of itself. Because the 1/10 scale model is a complete model of the town, it must contain a model of itself, and it does, a 1/100th. scale model of Bourton, and because the 1/100th. scale model is also a complete model of Bourton, it must also contain a 1/1000th. scale model of the scale model of the scale model of Bourton.

And it does. It is only a matter of time before a team of nano-technicians turn up in the town to etch a sub-micron scale model of Bourton on a silicon wafer, complete with mill, waterwheel, and a highly imaginative interpretation of the River Windrush as a stream of electrons.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

Distributed audiobook for Down and Out

Distributed audiobook for Down and Out 04/09/2004 04:04 PM
Jill Smith has begun a distributed audiobook project for my novel Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, whose new, liberal Creative Commons license allows for exactly this kind of mishegas (see the distributed audiobook project for Lessig's Free Culture for an example of how well this can work). She's recorded a reading of the prologue and posted it to the Internet Archive's public submission area, where open-licensed material is hosted for free.

I'm immensely gratified by this -- audiobooks are my favorite nontextual medium for storytelling and I can't fall asleep at night without one. I would love for others to take Jill's lead and finish it out. Link (Thanks Jill!)

Distributed Backups?

Distributed Backups? 09/10/2004 04:47 PM
Having lost way too many hard-drives in the last couple years, I've become pretty focused on backup systems, and (judging from a few conversations here at DEMOmobile) it's a subject that a lot of people are interested in. Bob Cringely's latest column is another one of his "big idea for a company" suggestions that he simply tosses out and hopes someone builds: a peer-to-peer distributed backup system. The idea is pretty simple. You download some backup software which encrypts the data you want to backup, breaks it up into little chunks and moves it out over a peer-to-peer network. The amount of data you can backup is limited by the amount you agree to store yourself. In Cringely's plan, this whole thing should cost $3.95/month. Of course, you'd need to distribute many copies of the various pieces to make sure that there aren't chunks missing -- which will also mean that many people will need to be in the system before it's really all that reliable. Obviously, some people will freak out about chunks of their data (even if they are encrypted) sitting on random hard drives out there). In the meantime, it appears Cringely doesn't use Google, because a quick search on the topic suggests at least some people are already working on this type of technology.
