Real Networks moves into iPod country

Real Networks moves into iPod country 07/27/2004 03:53 AM

I have purchased a total of 3 songs from iTunes and probably a 100 from the Music Match network which I have loaded on my iPod was it difficult, not at all in my opinion. I just had to be smart. I like the idea of not having to go through hoops to move the music to the iPod so Real may get some of my business. But If I was a betting man I would wager that Apple's legal team will be trying to shut this down. [Corante] [Wired ] [eWeek] [ArsTechnic a]

Real Networks Discovers The Difficulty
Of Having An Open Forum
08/18/2004 06:32 AM
RealNetworks seemed to assume that everyone was on their side in their effort to get their downloadable songs onto iPods. They set up a page with an open comments section, officially for people to express their anger at Apple for refusing to license FairTunes. Instead, Real discovered that people can say whatever they want when you give them an open forum and they started bashing Real Networks instead. As you might expect, the open forums didn't last long -- though, expecting as much, some enterprising folks made sure to copy what was on the page before it disappeared.

Clearly, we don't have enough incompatible formats for music download stores, because Real Networks has decided they can make a real dent in the marketplace by offering yet another me-too music download store - but with increased copy protection that no one supports. Thus, you can download songs from Real, but you won't be able to play them on just about any digital music player right now. How does this benefit consumers? That part isn't clear.

Pervasive networks—a ubiquitous “fabric” of computing, information, entertainment, and telemetry capability tied together by high-speed wired and wireless networks—are emerging from a flurry of new communication technologies now being used in home and office networks. Though communications carriers do not offer this type of continuous communication as a service today, the piece parts are already in place. [PRWEB Dec 20, 2004]

03/22/2005 05:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the 1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday.

How Many Social Networks Is Too Many?

How Many Social Networks Is Too Many? 11/14/2003 02:29 AM
I keep reading about all these "social networking software" plays, and the amazing thing to me is that, unlike during the last bubble, everyone except people working for these companies or venture capitalists seem to know it's a bubble. Yet, they keep on coming. The latest is that Evite has launched their own version of Friendster tied to their event organizing system, and eMode (known for their fun tests and dating system) has changed their name to Tickle, which is what their Friendster wannabe is called. They also bought another social networking service, to take one of about 100 off the market. Who the hell signs up for all of these systems? Paten ts aside, there is nothing complicated in creating such a site (there's even one Friendster rip off called Yet Another Friendster Rip Off). The complication comes in actually making money from such a site. The odd thing, though, is the rampant skepticism about these sites. In the 90s bubble years, it was never like this. Sure, there was some skepticism, but not the near universal skepticism that is focused on social software space right now. What's funny is that you would think so much skepticism would make the VCs stay away, but the reverse is happening.

Look Out Airport Networks... 11/18/2003 09:04 PM
JetBlue Airways is offering free Wi-Fi to folks hanging out in its departure gates in Terminal 6 in New York's JFK Airport: The airline also offers the free Wi-Fi in its hub, the LA/Long Beach airport. If more airlines start doing this, it will be interesting to watch what happens to the companies that are already offering fee-based services in airports. That seems to be a big business, with hotspot providers signing exclusive deals with airports. I wonder what sort of rights airlines have to build Wi-Fi networks in the gates they often use. Glenn has heard from some folks in the industry that airports are starting to assert rights to spectrum that they previously left alone, or encoding these rights in new contracts as airline leases expire....

You've Got Dust... Networks

You've Got Dust... Networks 09/20/2004 05:07 PM
For quite some time, we've been hearing various stories about "smart dust" with most of the talk coming from Dust Networks. After all this time, they've finally launched a product. It's clearly nowhere near the "smart dust" level yet, but looks to be a wireless mesh networking technology for letting a variety of sensors communicate easily, without killing batteries too quickly. Still, it's a big step forward for the space, meaning we should expect plenty of gushing news stories about the technology in the near future.
