Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Of all the personal computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80 percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92 million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another issue altogether.

People have devised many tricks—such as sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their ability to find the Web page all over again.

Nigeria arrests 500 suspected email scammers: Nigeria finally took some action on 419 scammers. I hereby retract this post.

Nigeria's agency against economic and financial crime said Monday that it had detained more than 500 suspects and seized property worth more than $US500 million from suspected fraudsters.

[...] The EFCC had demonstrated its resolve and commitment by arresting many previously "untouchable 419 kingpins", said Ribadu, a former senior police intelligence officer.

Although the identities of those in EFCC custody are not formally revealed, observers noted that they included legislators, lawyers, politicians, bankers and public functionaries.

A couple points to note here. First, look at the type of people arrested: lawyers, legislators (!), politicians, etc. Nice. Second, they seized $500 million? 419 scamming was evidently going well for these folks.
