palmOne intros Wi-Fi card for Tungsten,
Zire handhelds
08/17/2004 04:55 PM

On Tuesday, palmOne Inc. announced that its first Wi-Fi card for the Tungsten T3 and Zire 72 handhelds will be available in early September. The US$129 card is designed to complement the devices' built-in Bluetooth capability with 802.11b technology that allows wireless access to the Internet whenever the user is within range of a Wi-Fi access point or hotspot. It fits into the handheld's SDIO slot and searches for available Wi-Fi networks when the user taps the setup icon on the screen. palmOne had not yet placed a product page for the new card on its Web site as MacCentral posted this article.

PalmOne Tungsten T5 and E2 Rumors, Pics

PalmOne Tungsten T5 and E2 Rumors, Pics 08/30/2004 06:26 AM

T53.jpg
imageSo when I mentioned that we had some older news that needed to be revisited, this is basically what I was talking about. Some of the first information about the PalmOne Tungsten T5 and E2 PDAs has come to light, and while there's lots of interesting tidbits (rumor, of course) like the T5's lack of a slider like the old one, I think the most notable bit of news is that both of these will finally be running PalmOne's BEOS-influenced OS6. There is also a planned (rumored) OS6 update for the Tungsten C and T3 after the new T5 is released in April of next year. Looks like good stuff.

It is a little sad, in a way, to see Palm's form factor sort of giving up the ghost and moving to a PocketPC-styled slate, but really, it makes total sense. The silk-screened Graffiti area was really played out, and if OS6 does everything it promises to do, we'll want every bit of screen real estate we can get.

PalmOne Inc. is expected Wednesday to release an update to its most popular handheld with the introduction of the Tungsten E2. PalmOne was loathe to change too many details on the popular model, which was its best-selling personal digital assistant (PDA) in the U.S. during the holiday shopping season of 2004, said Raj Doshi, a product marketing manager with PalmOne. The Milpitas, California, company installed a brighter display, Bluetooth wireless technology, and flash memory on the unit, but left many features of the Tungsten E intact, he said.

The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy 07/16/2004 04:50 PM
A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced WiFi Spy is a rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform identically.

To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

SanDisk continues to push combo envelope with 256 Mb and Wi-Fi in a single SD card: These cards still remain supported only by Pocket PC systems running Microsoft software, but it's a great technical achievement. As we move into a time when it's likely that digital cameras will offer driver-level support for Wi-Fi Compact Flash and similar memory cards, SanDisk could be poised to deliver their combo punch for that market. Some storage (at least temporary) coupled with the ability to transmit images....
