Media Company Wins Award of Excellence
from Training Industry
09/18/2004 03:55 AMThe Canadian Society for Training & Development has awarded its 2004
Canadian Award for Training Excellence to ExecuGo Media for its
design, development and delivery of “The Hallmark Way,” a “back to the
future” kind of employee learning program for Hallmark Canada. In an
era when most training industry pundits debate whether the future of
business training lies in e-learning, classroom events, print
materials or a combination of all three, ExecuGo Media and Hallmark
have decided that the answer is: none of the above. The Hallmark Way
features the ancient art of people helping people – with the right mix
of new-age digital and traditional print media simply supporting their
efforts. The Canadian Society of Training & Development will officially
award ExecuGo Media and Hallmark Canada the Canadian Award of Training
Excellence for The Hallmark Way at a ceremony during its annual
exposition in November. [PRWEB Sep 18, 2004]

On Horton Plaza...
On Horton Plaza...
02/17/2004 07:50 PMWhen I think back to ETCon and my time in America my mind can't
help catching onto images of Hor
ton Plaza in San Diego - the Escher-like mall-from-hell that kind
of sat in my head and unfolded its sprawling, immoral, monstrous,
mis-shapen, rhizomatic self into the nether regions of my cerebral
cortex while I was busy looking for Tacos. I've tried to collage
together a partially exploded view of the place but it's not particularly representative.
Apparently the architect wanted to create an 'architecture of
confusion' where you would get completely immersed in the experience
of the place, not want to leave and stumble upon new shops
serendipitously. Personally I found the place mind-destroying,
confusing, uncomfortable and not-a-little creepy. I kept seeing shops
that I wanted to get to but could see no obvious way to do so and
wandering down apparent walkways or paths that would suddenly turn
into cul-de-sac balconies. It took me fifteen minutes to find the top
floor food-court and a further ten to escape. The maps were of no help
whatsoever. I kept expecting to see David Bowie glued to a
ceiling twirling a glass orb on his fingertips. Very strange.
Unsurprisingly, Matt
loved it.

Hot Dog: A Frank Story
Hot Dog: A Frank Story
03/14/2005 05:38 PM O where, oh where has my little dog gone? O where, oh
where can he be? Now sausage is good, bologna, of course. O where,
oh where can he be? They make them of dog, they make them of horse,
I think they made them of he. Ever the target of cruel innuendo
and nauseous folk legend, it is a phallic delicacy enjoyed around the
world with roots deep in man's prehistory. Banned by gods and
emperors, regionalized into thousands of revered variations, acme of
summer, sport and various colorectal cancers: it is called the red
hot, the frank, the wiener in a bun -- or, most famously -- the hot
dog. This is its story.

05/10/2004 08:54 AMOver at Frank Paynter's there's been an interesting and useful
discussion of my attempt to find a way for the left and the right to
agree on a policy condemning torture. (As I've noted several times
now, I should have talked not about the right wing but about the Rush
wing.) Frank's first blog entry about it is here and his reply to my
reply is here. Be sure to read the comments where I am taken to task
rather severely by some exceptionally thoughtful people. (I reply
there also.)...

Frank Quattrone Guilty, But of What?
05/03/2004 03:22 PMAP: Quat
trone guilty on all counts. A federal jury in Manhattan,
deliberating on its second day, returned guilty verdicts on all three
counts against Quattrone -- obstructing a grand jury, obstructing
federal regulators and witness tampering.
This may
well be overturned, because by almost all accounts the judge was
biased for the prosecution -- and blatantly so.
Quattrone's defenders, who remain legion, insist he was just a fall
guy for the bubble era. Back then, they say, "Everyone did it." Maybe
so, but those were hugely corrupt times, and Quattrone was the poster
child for the rampant sleaze that turned Silicon Valley into an
ethical cesspool.

Steven Frank’s tip for improving
your RSS
Steven Frank’s tip for improving
your RSS
01/18/2004 06:02 PMSteven Frank has a great
simple tip for
improving your RSS: subscribe to your own feed (or feeds).
What if your feed appears weird, or doesn’t appear at all, in
NetNewsWire? Validate it. Ctrl-click on the subscription and choose
Validate this Feed. (Yes, this command should also be in the main
menu. In the future it will be.)
It the feed is valid, but NetNewsWire does something strange, then let
us know about it: it’s mostly likely a bug.
But if the feed is not valid, you have a few options for fixing it:
1. If you’re running your own software, then you may have a bug
to fix.
2. If you’re running someone else’s software, but
you’re using a customized template or script to generate your
feed, check your work.
3. If you’re running someone else’s software, but you
haven’t customized anything, report a bug to the person or
company who created your software. Be sure to include the URL of your
feed, so they can validate it too and see what the problem is.
(Important: be nice. Software has bugs. Most developers are
conscientious and work hard at fixing bugs.)
