iTunes Music Store users got 500K free
songs last week
05/05/2004 12:29 PMApple said Wednesday that its iTunes Music Store set a new download
record of 3.3 million songs in the week since the third-generation
store was introduced. 500,000 of those downloads came in the form of
free songs from popular commercial artists made available as part of a
"Free Song of the Day" promotion to celebrate the store's one-year
anniversary. Last week Apple said the iTunes Music Store currently
sells 2.7 million songs per week. Subtracting the free songs, this
suggests that the store's weekly business may have been slightly more
brisk than usual.

Real vs Apple
Real vs Apple
08/18/2004 08:29 AMRealNetworks have upped the stakes in the growing war between itself
and Apple.
The launch of the
Freedom of Music Choice
website (complete with a logo featuring the iPod as a padlock)
pulls no punches, and directly attacks Apple’s refusal to open
up it’s FairPlay
DRM used on the iPod.
It’s not enough to denounce crime and lock up criminals, say the
social scientists. We must consider the root causes of crime. Which
brings us to Apple Computer Inc., which is encouraging people to steal
digital music files, and undermining its own success to boot.
This vitriol follows the trading of blows last week over Real’s
Harmony technology — a crude hack which allows songs purchased
from the Real Music Store to be played on an iPod.
Apple’s
response was predictably angry and swift :
We strongly caution Real and their customers that when we update our
iPod software from time to time it is highly likely that Real’s
Harmony technology will cease to work with current and future iPods.
It seems obvious to me that Real have lost considerable market share
since the success of iTunes Music Store and the iPod, and are playing
their last card — portraying itself as the ‘voice of the
public’ and ‘champion of free choice’.
You could understand this if were actually true — but it’s
100% PR bullshit, and only serves to make them look increasingly
desperate. The fact is Apple make far superior software and offer a
far superior experience to Real. That is why people are choosing Apple
over Real, no other reason.

Apple And Real -- A Few Thoughts
Apple And Real -- A Few Thoughts
04/27/2004 12:29 AMAs Apple continually tells us, iTunes is only there to break even. The
real goal is to sell more iPods. If that logic is true, then letting
Real sell tunes for the iPod should be a good idea. By Richard Menta,
p2pnet.net (via MyAppleMenu)
Editor's Notes :
Does
iPod need iTunes? It is true that iTunes is a loss-leader in order to
sell iPods. But Apple does need iTunes not because so that iPod users
can buy tunes, but because iPod users can buy tunes
in a
high-quality and consistent manner. How can Real add value? My
opinion is that it can't without adding inconsistencies. For example,
by varying the DRM terms, or by allowing non-labels to sell music. But
Steve Jobs do not want to sacrifies quality and consistency unless
he's forced to. And he's not being forced to today. (Well, except for
the bit about hell being frozed over.)

Real Networks has undercut Apple by slashing their music downloads
to 49 cents a song. In comparison to Apple’s 99 cents a song, it is a
big drop in price. After Real Networks said a few weeks ago that they
have found a way for their songs to be played on Apple’s IPod, Steve
Jobs can not be a happy camper right now….
