VuPoint's $300 6-megapixel Camera 06/24/2004 02:38 PM

vp6cam-playingcard.jpg imageI have to say, I'm as dubious about this $300 VuPoint 6-megapixel camera as Red is over at The Red Ferret Journal, but it's just expensive enough that it could actually offer decent image quality and a small housing, although it doesn't look like it has any optical zoom, which would just about kill it for me. As soon as I see any reviews -- with sample images -- I'll let you know.

It has 16MB of internal storage, which isn't going to get you very far as a video camera, but accepts SD cards for additional storage. It's not really going to provide high-quality anything, but for $230 or so it might be a nice thing to throw in a bag and have with you just in case.

More on the 22 Megapixel Sinar Camera
Back
06/15/2004 06:54 AM

Remember that 22-megapixel Sinar camera back from yesterday? Reader Jason Ozolins explains what makes peltier cooling on large CCDs so useful:

I think you'll find that the Peltier cooler on the Sinar camera back is not used to dissipate lots of internally generated heat (typical "leet overcloxor" use), but to keep the CCD sensor cold, which increases the signal to noise ratio, and allows them to get that incredible 14 usable bits of resolution per colour component.

It's been done with CCDs since the 1980s by astronomers; back then, making a 200Kpixel CCD was a hugely expensive proposition, so you might as well spend a few thousand more cooling the thing to wring the absolute most information possible out of its images.

I didn't realize high-end sensors generated a lot of heat during operation, but apparently the Sinarback dumps enough that it has an integrated Peltier cooler to enable it to be continuously used. No idea on price; let's say 'spendy' for now. (Thanks, Lorenz!)

03/17/2005 03:51 AM

cdma_razr.jpgMotorola has announced a CDMA version of the massively popular V3 RAZR, which means either Sprint or Verizon users should be expecting the phone at some point in the near future. Engadget played with the new model at CTIA and noticed it has a 1-megapixel camera, instead of the GSM RAZR's skimpy VGA sensor, which is good news for late adopters, I guess. Sadly, none of the new Motorola phones are quite as impressive as the RAZR. I was really hoping the SLVR models, as thin as they are, were thinner.

Nikon 4 Megapixel Coolpix 4100 05/28/2004 12:44 PM

nikoncp4100-press.jpg imageNikon's got a new Coolpix coming out this summer with a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.6-inch LCD and--in a rare return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix 4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100 will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the manufacturer.

hp_r507front-001.jpg imageHP's newest camera in its R-series range, the Photosmart R507, is a fine looking bit of hardware, despite my (admittedly unfair) predisposition against any camera branded with PC vendor's stamp. The 4.1-megapixel camera has a bead-blasted aluminum front (using beads from real hippies!) and a 3x optical zoom Pentax lens.

As suits a consumer camera such as this, the R507 will come with 32MB of memory in-built, with additional memory capabilities available via a standard SD-card slot. Strangely, no MSRP on the press release.

Aiptek PocketDV 4100 07/16/2004 05:02 PM

aiptek_4100.jpg imageIt's probably not going to give you the same sort of visual fidelity of a nicer camera, but for $230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a 4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)

Sanyo Xacti C4 08/23/2004 08:53 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/xacti_c4.jpg" alt="xacti_c4.jpg image" width="398" height="211" class="center"/>Sanyo has updated its Xacti flash camcorder line from the C1 model to these new C4s, which appear to have a few nice improvements for those who go tapeless, including a video stabilizer, an upgraded four-megapixel CCD for still images, and a slightly larger LCD screen (1.8-inch instead of 1.5-inch). There are some other slight changes, as well, but it doesn't look like the video quality is any better; we're still talking VGA (640 by 480 pixels at 30 frames per second). Not bad, but not an upgrade, either.

The new colors are nice, too, and I do love this form factor. It's much more usable than I had first thought, and the docking stations make them really handy. (Thanks, Martin!)
