Reuters - Rising interest rates have yet to cool white-hot real estate prices. Perhaps that's why the concept of virtual home ownership has captured the imagination of a growing number of online gamers, who are plunking down real cash for their own slice of the digital frontier.

Hogzilla is real. And now, he's real
dead.
03/22/2005 05:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the 1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday.

Yahoo Plays Favorites

Yahoo Plays Favorites 06/03/2004 05:26 AM
When it comes to blocking intrusive Internet software, Yahoo Inc.’s new Anti-Spy gives adware the benefit of the doubt. The beta version of the spyware-fighting toolbar add-on, which Yahoo released last week, doesn’t default to detect adware—a category of software in which Yahoo’s paid search division has a financial stake. Instead, users who want to identify adware in their systems via Anti-Spy must check a box each time they conduct a scan.Read more…This article is a eye-opener. I find it really interesting that Yahoo’s business represents 31% of Claria’s (the adware/spyware company formerly known as Gator) income. I think that this speaks volumes about Yahoo’s ethics, if nothing else.

Scoble plays it cool

Scoble plays it cool 07/28/2004 02:38 AM

I love this guy - Robert Scoble....

Yesterday I did the unfathomable: I turned down Steven Levy from
Newsweek.

First, some background. Seven years ago when I was doing marketing for a
small Silicon Valley company (Winnov) I would have given quite a few of my teeth
to meet with someone like Levy.

Back then I thought it was unfair that the press paid so much attention to
big companies. It's always Microsoft this. Apple that. Sun the other thing.

Do I deserve this press attention now? No. I'm quite honored, but there are
so many companies doing so many interesting things out there that I'd like to
point out.

Heck, since I know Steven's reading here, how about we point them out here?
Is your company doing something interesting? Think that Newsweek should write
about it? Leave a note in the comment field here.

For instance, Greg Reinacker's href="http://www.newsgator.com">NewsGator is worthy of coverage. The company
Russell Beattie works for, href="http://www.wavemarket.com/">WaveMarket, is one I'm watching. Mobile
services are gonna be hot.

I could go on for years. Feedster. Technorati. Pubsub. Six Apart. Weblogs
inc. Groove. Konfabulator (coming soon to Windows). Napster. Active Words.

You do note many of these companies aren't currently using Microsoft
technologies. So, why do I point to them? For one, they are doing interesting
work that's expanding the market. That's real important. The way we all win is
to see new scenarios, new products, new opportunities, built by new
companies.

So, let's hear it. Which companies do you think deserve the press'
attention?

Oh, and Steven: sorry that we weren't able to match our schedules up this
time.

I have to say the upside of having bloggers at the DNC is that I've learned the ropes of how these conventions go, through their eyes. I didn't know about speech embargoes until a few people posted about speeches before they happened.

While watching Fox news for a few minutes tonight (to see O'Reilly take on Michael Moore), I noticed they don't show speeches in their entirety like the other networks, but simply cut to certain sections. Knowing about these embargoes, it becomes clear why they choose to cut away to live, in-progress speeches -- they know exactly what's coming up and they can highlight the most offending sections, and just those sections, out of context from the rest of the speech.

De-Malwaring a Machine

De-Malwaring a Machine 12/28/2004 05:13 PM

How to fix Mom's computer: Here's a great article on how to de-malware a computer. Gina from scribbling.net went home over the holidays and had to "fix" her mother's computer. She was so awesomely kind to write down everything she did, complete with screencaps.

Related to this, the people in my office have purchased about a dozen new home computers from Dell this year (the Dime nsion 2400 was going for as cheap as $349 at one point). They have them all shipped to the office, and they ask me to set them up.

This means I've gone through a dozen new computer set-ups this year, and I've developed it into an art-form. I really should write the process down — what I enable, what I update, what I uninstalled, what I reinstall, etc. I'm proud to say that I present people with a pretty bulletproof machine, when everything is said and done.

If you don't think it's necessary to set-up a brand new computer well, read this. Via Kottke.

Last month I went to an all-day umpiring workshop, and today was the Little League Opening Day parade. As a side-effect, I’m feeling rather culturally well-rooted, not to mention erudite: two strikes on the batter, a foul-tip bounces off the catcher’s mask into the air, the third basemen charges in and catches it; is the batter out? Or... runners on first and second, pop fly to third, infield-fly rule called, the ball bounces off the third baseman’s glove through foul territory into the dugout, what happens? Then there’s the crash and howl of the bagpipe band as hundreds of bright-clad children march onto the immaculate infield grass... Opening Day!...
