ETCon is great. There's lots of smart people here and a great conversation can be had by just bumping off the walls and running into people. I got into lots of conversations with people who were using the improvements we announced yesterday, and got some great feedback. One intriguing conversation was with John Battelle, who used to run The Industry Standard, is now at Berkeley and is writing a great weblog on the topic of search.

We got onto my fascination with Amazon.com's link cosmos - watching it refresh is like looking at what people around the world are buying and talking about. John challeneged me to make that more easy to understand. So, I put my thinking cap on last night and decided to build an example Technorati Hack - Most popular products people are talking about today. This uses the Technorati API combined with the Amazon API to get aggregate information on the products people are linking to on Amazon, in real-time, and then showing a combined view of the product picture along with the context from the most authoritative blogger who has posted about the product in the last 24 hours.

It is updated hourly. Props to John for the inspiration!

As a manager in charge of technical professionals, I have learned that managing projects with multiple team members requires certain people skills, as well as technical skills. In the world of management, there are many skills required when it comes to the management of people. These skills, and how you apply them, vary depending on the type of business you are in, as well as the type of people whom you manage.

If you're reading this site through an RSS reader (or some other aggregation service), you will notice some spurious updates every now and then - with no apparent change. This is because I am experimenting with the RSS feed and Atom feeds of this Wiki, which will cause some occasional ghost updates with feed readers that do not respect the Last-Modified -header (like Bloglines and Pinseri).

I'm so thoroughly jet-lagged that I am not finding this funny anymore (though I am pretty sure all my readers are). I woke up at 1 pm today (and I am rather lucky I did not have any meetings in the morning) by not waking up to the alarm clock. Upon closer inspection, it turned out that my alarm clock (and my cell phone) are still living in US time... So they would've woken me up at around 6 pm.

Oh, BTW, Loïc Le Meur really nails it. This is exactly what ETech was like. Smart guy - and no, he is not really stealing that G5, even though we all have photographic evidence of it.

Mark me down for "C". ;-)

- If there was an award category for stoner teen comedy, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle would deserve an Oscar. Aside from being an enjoyable movie, two things stuck out: 1) Most of the white characters are one-dimensional stereotypes, while characters of other ethnicities usually had depth. It's nice to see the shoe on the other foot, and I thought it was hilarious and illuminating. 2) Neil Patrick Harris doesn't take himself too seriously, allowing himself to be mocked in both this movie and in Undercover Brother. Most actors can't laugh at themselves, but NPH continues to let himself be the butt of jokes which is worthy of praise.

- The X games were pretty much a disaster. First they confined programming to just a few hours over the course of three nights on just ESPN instead of a week of programming on any of the ESPN channels (put the whole competition uncut on ESPN 8 ("The Ocho") at 2am!). Then they insisted on showing things live instead of editing them on tape. This created a couple big problems: worse than just being live, they actually delayed the athletes for TV time, sometimes for 30 minutes or more. That means muscles and minds cooled down during the dead time and people got hurt, badly in some cases. The other big problem was that open-ended events could go on forever. One night's two hour slot featured two guys on motorcycles trying to jump over a stick for 90 minutes, leaving the bike vert comp to wait, which barely got started at the end. Then the bikes had to delay for a slot within Sportscenter (which wouldn't have gotten recorded unless I was watching it happen live), and ESPN didn't show street skating at all, because there was no time that night. It appears that advertisers have left the event (much less top-flight sponsors than previous years), but it would have been nice if ESPN could have recouped their losses by showing more of it on TV -- if for nothing else than fans. I suspect at the rate things are going, there will be no X games next year.

- this is the best TiVo story I've heard.

God, I have so much I want to write about. I want to tell you guys all In the City Interactive and what apparently smart people were saying about convergence. I want to tell you all about the debate I had with BPI-chief Steve Redmond and Factory records' grouchy swearing pop svengali, Tony Wilson. I want to tell you all about the Geek dinner for Robert Scoble that I attended with about a thousand other people, and where I had too many margaritas and scabbed Lucky Strikes off Hugh Macleod. I want to talk about hanging out with Joe Clark, Andy Budd and the @media folks at Pizza Express last night.

I want to talk about the complete absence of news about my father, and how much it's preying on my mind and about the mini-reunion I'm going to this afternoon for people who were present at the very first few blogmeets in London, five years ago this weekend. (Full blogmeets to follow.) And then there's all the chat that I'd like to be doing about what I should be doing in San Francisco (arriving a week today, free up your diaries), and the fifty ideas for posts and things-to-build that are clogging up my Ideas for things.txt file on my laptop and which I see little prospect of ploughing through...

But no time right now. Sorry. I swear to God that I'll get some of it done over the next forty-eight hours or so. One thing I will mention though is what I'm doing tomorrow morning - where I'll be extemporising at length about corporate weblogs on BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House between 9am and 10am. As ever, if you find these things interesting, you can get a pretty much moment-by-moment guide to my life by subscribing to my Flickr photostream, which currently includes photos of me in a radio studio being interviewed and a stunningly realised representation of Andy Budd as exotic Spanish dancer.
