Fahrenheit 9/11: read it again for the
first time
07/01/2004 03:34 AMHere's what purports to be a verbatim transcript of Fahrenheit 9/11
(the movie hasn't opened in the UK yet, so I haven't seen it).
NARRATOR: Sooner or later this special relationship with a regime that
Amnesty International condemns as a wide-spread human rights violator
(cut to video of public beheading) would come back to haunt the
Bushes. Now, after 9/11, it was an embarrassment and they preferred
that no one ask any questions.
CAROL ASHLEY: The investigation should have begun on September 12th;
there's no reason why it shouldn't have. Three thousand people were
dead, it was a murder, and it should have gotten started immediately.
NARRATOR: First, Bush tried to stop Congress from setting up its own
9/11 investigation.
PRESIDENT BUSH: It's important for us to not reveal how we collect
information; that's what the enemy wants. And we're fighting an enemy.

12/02/2003 03:05 AMIn a short week of trading, AAPL ended up only slightly, closing
Friday afternoon at just under $21. As we all know, however, yesterday
marked the official holiday season kick-off, and Apple jumped into the
mix with a 10-percent discount on iPods and related accessories, and
$100 and $200 discounts on the 17 and 20-inch iMac, respectively.
While it may not seem like much (albeit, $50 on the top-of-the-line

07/20/2004 12:54 PMSmall Town Software announced on Tuesday the release of
Time and
Budgets, a new application that integrates with Apple's iCal
application to supply time and budgeting functions for projects. The
software also works with any calendar program that supports WebDAV
(Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which means .Mac
subscribers can use iCal with the online service to seamlessly input
data and generate reports that convert time into dollars and cents
that can be compared against a project's budget. Available reports in
Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual charts, details about
time logged in specific phases and tasks, aggregate workgroup feedback
and more. Another option can generate e-mail alerts when projects have
reached certain financial goals.

press conference by George W. Bush
Love is hate
War is peace
No is yes
And we're all free
Why, by Tracy Chapman
Reading the transcript of George w. Bush's press
conference tonight (I couldn't bear to watch it), Tracy Chapman's song
kept running through my head. It seemed like Bush had a script of 5
points he set out to make, and he kept on making them in response to
the questions, no matter how inane they sounded. It was amazing the
number of logical fallacies he committed in the course of one press
conference, but just as amazing is the fact that as a body politic, we
don't expect our representatives to be able think and speak logically.
Still, I can't resist noting a few of the more egregious offenses
against logic and reality.
it's hard to say the United States is defiant about
the United Nations when I was the person who took the issue to the
United Nations September the 12th, 2002. We've been working with the
United Nations. We've been working through the United
Nations.
vs.
I'm confident the American people understand
that when it comes to our security, if we need to act, we will act.
And we really don't need United Nations approval to do so.

Swarming for Peace
03/19/2003 10:24 PMJack Bury, a 20-year old poet, is co-creator of a Microsoft IE add-in
called Eyebees. If you join a "swarm" - people interested in the same
topic - the add-in shows you the movement of all other swarm members

swarm member and you are taken to whatever site they're visiting. It's
a visceral visual experience. To join the peace swarm, download the

Poop is the one experience all human beings have in
common. Did you "take some time to think when you take your
time to stink" on
Poop for Peace Day? Well, if not, the day after is a
perfect time to
properly honor this noble holiday. Sure is hard
to argue with this: "We all poop, which means we're all human,
which means we're all brothers and sisters."

Peace Swarm
03/20/2003 08:31 AM Here's a little experiment in social software. I've been talking with
Jack Bury, a 20-year-old American poet living in Amsterdam, who is
part of a tiny start-up trying to get some traction for "Eyebees," a
Microsoft IE add-in. (It'll be open sourced eventually.) The add-in
puts a frame on the left of your browser that shows you up to 200
little dots (Eyebees), each representing another person in the "swarm"
you've joined. Their relative position shows which pages they're
currently viewing. If a few people are each looking at, say, Doc's
blog, then you'll see the five Eyebees clustered...
Refocusing Peace
Refocusing Peace
03/20/2003 05:32 PMGrant Henninger is suggesting that the peace movement refocus its
message since obviously we're not going to prevent the war. Instead,
Grant suggests, we should focus on limiting civilian casualties and
ensuring that we step up to our responsibility to rebuild Iraq
afterwards. I'm in favor of both of Grant's points, but I think there
is a point to continuing to protest the war itself: It tells the
government that we don't all fall into a line when a war is declared,
and it tells the world that not all Americans believe this war is
worth the death and instability...
