3Com, Trapeze Team Up

3Com, Trapeze Team Up

3Com, Trapeze Team Up 08/16/2004 07:48 PM

3Com's decision to partner with Trapeze on WLAN switches may be further evidence that the WLAN switch is here to stay: 3Com said today that it formed a partnership with Trapeze which will initially be an OEM agreement but in the future will migrate into a co-development relationship. 3Com also expects to include Trapeze software into some of its platforms. "The growth of this market is very attractive," said Brent Nixon, director of product management for 3Com. He expects the WLAN switch market to continue to grow and believes that having a switch will allow 3Com to better target the educational, healthcare, enterprise, and public access markets. The WLAN switch market started out as an industry crowded with startups and many experts said the market was likely to consolidate. So far, however, the switch makers aren't being bought up by more established players nor are they going out of business. They are getting creative though. AirFlow, for example, stopped making its switch and said it would instead try to license its software to former competitors or other vendors. Airespace made a deal with NEC where NEC is selling a converged wireless voice and data platform that incorporates Airespace's WLAN switch. Airespace also has OEM agreements with Alcatel and Nortel and a co-development deal with D-Link. 3Com said it has a number of reasons for wanting to partner with Trapeze rather than develop its own WLAN switch, buy a startup, or form a basic OEM deal. "We feel that by a partnership relationship, Trapeze will be focused on maintaining their advantage in the market," Nixon said. He also thinks that a partnership will allow 3Com to reach the market faster than if it developed its own product or bought a startup. A basic OEM relationship would also fall short of what 3Com was looking for. "If you just go with a straight OEM relationship, you don't quite get the synergies you get from a true partnership," he said. The relationship is not exclusive and Trapeze doesn't expect the co-development aspect of the deal to interfere with the possibility of OEM deals with other vendors, said Dan Simone, co-founder and vice president of product management for Trapeze. Once the companies start working closely to develop products, they will aim to integrate the wireless switch technology into 3Com's networking technologies. "We'll get the technologies to work closely together over wireless so that it's...

Trapeze Brings Cisco APs into Switch

Trapeze Brings Cisco APs into Switch 04/18/2005 02:47 PM
Trapeze has added support for several Cisco APs: WIth a command-line change, a Cisco AiroNet 350, 1100, or 1200 can be part of a Trapeze-managed WLAN switched network. This should make it an easier sell for Trapeze VARs walking into Cisco-oriented enterprises, especially with Cisco VARs and direct sales folk trying to push new Airespace equipment into existing installations. This announcement ranks up there with AirWave's recent 3.1 version bump that allows AirWave's software management tool for WLANs to handle Cisco Airespace devices, too....

Trapeze Upgrades Switch Solution

Trapeze Upgrades Switch Solution 12/18/2003 03:39 PM
Like other WLAN switch vendors, Trapeze has come out with some upgrades that address shortcomings indicated by the market: Trapeze access points now support 802.11g and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption keys, which are part of the 802.11i security spec in progress. (WPA includes only TKIP keys, far superior to WEP, but not as good as AES for government-grade operations.) The access points can also connect directly to an existing switch or a Trapeze switch so customers have more options in how they architect the network. The platform now can also continuously scan the air for rogue APs. Once rogues are found, it identifies their locations on a network map. Trapeze also integrated with SpectraLink's voice over Wi-Fi solution so the platform will support the solution. Trapeze has already integrated with Vocera and Telesym, other voice over Wi-Fi vendors....

Aruba, Maybe Trapeze Go Open Source

Aruba, Maybe Trapeze Go Open Source 03/14/2005 05:46 PM
Aruba will release some of its access-point code under open-source licenses: Trapeze may follow: Peter Judge at Techworld reports the fascinating news that Aruba wants more Atheros-based access points to incorporate their secret sauce by making it no longer secret. They'll post source code on Sourceforge under open-source copyright agreements. This commodifies the AP, pushing Aruba's intelligence entirely into the controlling switch and reducing overall cost of management. Judge reports that Trapeze is expected to make a similar announcement. Now wait a minute, your grizzled editor thinks to himself aloud, scratching his head, where have I heard this model before? Oh, yes: Sputnik. Sputnik's first centralized management software release through its current one relies on firmware incorporated into access points that they make available at no charge to commoditize the AP and put value into the central controller. But Sputnik is a management tool; Aruba is a switch vendor. It's interesting to see the model recapitulate itself. Update: NetGear will pursue Aruba certification for their access points, Tom's Networking reports....

Calif. College to Get WLAN From Trapeze 12/03/2003 02:41 PM
Ohlone College in Fremont Calif. is building a WLAN using gear from switch maker Trapeze: The network should cover the campus by the middle of next year. Ohlone wanted a network that could support 802.1X including AES, and the Trapeze system could support that level of security. (Glenn's mom used to take classes at Ohlone, which had--maybe still has--a beautifully but spread-out campus that's just ideal for Wi-Fi connectivity: lots of high points and many buildings.)...

While I never really thought plasma was worth looking at, the DLP and LCD sets out there are either too large or too expensive. This low end panasonic 37" plays movies beautifully and does just fine on regular satellite broadcasts. Plus, it was dirt cheap (for a plasma) at Costco.

Now I just need to figure out where in the hell I'll put a center channel speaker, since the stand bulges out and gets in the way. Maybe it's time to finally go with some cheap in-wall units, though I've pretty much burned all my selfish purchase karma for the year (and probably next year too).

Yes, Virginia, there is something called corporate grandeur. In the New York Post yesterday, a “H’Wood Buzz” article emerged speculating that Steve Jobs could very well become “the most welcome second-in-charge and nominal successor to (Walt Disney Co. chair Michael) Eisner." At first, mouse ears and iMacs might seem like Shangri la, but for a man who’s already two full-time CEOs, things could get a little tricky if a third job opportunity came along.

Linux and thin clients

Linux and thin clients 04/14/2005 12:34 PM
The primary goal of Linux desktop operation is to give users access to typical desktop applications -- word processors, spreadsheets, Web browsers, etc. An alternative exists to this configuration, though: thin client computing. In many respects, thin client computing is very old; the typical mainframe model, with a large central server and many dumb terminals attached to it, closely resembles thin client computing. Thin clients, though, give users the ability to run GUI programs. Before going too far with a desktop Linux deployment, you may want to consider a Linux thin client solution. It's not for everybody, but some sites can benefit from it.

If this goes to market in 2005, as this article says, look for cooler implementations of the same technology in 2006 and beyond. I would not be surprised if folks aren't waiting on eBook readers until this tech gets a little more common, thereby offering the mobility of paper and the coolness of LCD.

Elvis on a Wheat Thin?

Elvis on a Wheat Thin? 03/17/2005 03:13 AM

A while back we talked about a grilled cheese sandwich with the image of the Virgin Mary on it, which sold for $28,000 on Ebay. Today I heard a story on the radio about Miles Bradley, an antique dealer in Chamberlain, SD — just down the road a piece — who found a Wheat Thin cracker with a likeness of Elvis' head on it. Or so some say. I just don't see it. Bradley tried to repeat the grilled cheese success & cash in on his find by selling it on eBay.

Apparently I wasn't the only one who failed to see The King on the cracker. (Take a look at the pictures on the auction site & let me know what you think.) The bidding failed to break the $500 reserve price, and the auction closed with a high bid of $451. The disappointed Bradley is reportedly going to give it another shot, but if it doesn't break the $500 reserve this time, he's gonna eat it. He probably should've done that to begin with.

If it were me, after going to the trouble of listing it on Ebay, I would've taken the $451 and run.
