I just realized that the Fido GPRS package I just mentioned in Derek's blog is 50 Canadian and not US dollars a month. If you really need GPRS, then that's quite a steal compared to the offerings down here. Of course, their coverage isn't so good yet, in particular they don't cover California... :-) Speaking of Canada, Michael Crawford's diary entry Talking to Americans is really funny....

I got T-Mobile to enable GPRS ("T-Mobile Internet") on my phone the other day. It works alright with the t68i and the PowerBook. I used Ross Barkman's "modem scripts". With the right script with the magic "use GPRS" commands I just had to choose the correct "CID" and enter "internet2.voicestream.com" as the phone number. So it's not all roses for T-Mobile and HP's new iPaq h6315 Pocket PC phone. According to users on various forums who purchased the recently-released device, using the built-in GPRS connection to send email over 4k in size can cause a disconnection (and subsequent failure). Others are reporting issues connecting to other internet services over GPRS connection (and even Wi-Fi, although I think that's just a random issue). T-Mobile has acknowledged the issue (not publically, but to users reporting in the forums), and word has it there is a problem in the h6315 GPRS TCP/IP stack.

That should be fixable via software patch, which hopefully will hit the web soon.

Looks like the Computex internet cock-up has sussed itself out long enough for The Register to file this report profiling an eminently internetted sub-notebook from Taiwanese vendor Dialogue, branded the 'Flybook.' Not only does the Transmeta Crusoe-powered laptop sport WiFi (802.11b sadly) and optional Bluetooth, but there's even a built-in tri-band GPRS modem, as well. The 1024 x 600 8.9-inch screen would be "ideal for DVD playback if there was a built-in optical drive" notes The Reg's Tony Smith, but in a sub-notebook this size an external drive is fairly standard. The Flybook even has a touch-sensitive screen that can be flipped about like a Tablet PC, although it runs regular Windows XP. Looks like a great little notebook, and although there is no pricing information as of yet, you'll be able to pick up one in black, white, silver, red, or blue as soon as they find a Western vendor.
