PG&E Strikes Again 08/30/2004 12:04 PM
Well, they're back. I shot the picture at the right a few minutes ago. With no warning, PG&E shut off power to do some repair work from last night's outage. Here's the thing. They know that I was one of the affected folks yesterday because I called twice requesting information. Why the hell didn't they call me this morning to warn me? I'd have moved my car out of my garage (the one with the electrically operated door) and...

Marathon, a classic Mac FPS which was said to have rivaled the Doom series, reached its tenth anniversary this week. The official game has been long dead since Microsoft purchased Bungie, but a thriving community has enhanced the popular title and kept it up-to-date. This year, celebrate Marathon's tenth anniversary by playing Marathon: Aleph One. If you don't currently own a copy of the original game, don't forget to download the demo files as well (available on the Aleph One page).

MLB strikes out with Microsoft, AOL

MLB strikes out with Microsoft, AOL 04/11/2005 05:46 PM
Two high-profile deals between Major League Baseball and Microsoft and America Online have quietly been scrapped, raising questions about the value of exclusive sports programming rights on the Internet. Microsoft on Monday confirmed that it ended a two-year deal to offer live video and audio broadcasts of Major League Baseball games to its MSN Premium subscribers. Under the agreement, which was inked last year, Microsoft was supposed to pay the league an estimated $40 million over two years. The software giant declined to say why it prematurely discontinued the deal in February 2005.

Three Strikes And Qwest's Out? Probably
Not Yet...
04/06/2005 04:49 AM
With MCI turning down Qwest's larger offer for the third time, some may hope that the deal with Verizon is finally set. However, that seems unlikely as the situation is about to get very , very messy. Expect lots and lots of lawsuits to be filed in short order over a variety of issues having to do with this takeover attempt. If you thought the battle by Oracle to take over Peoplesoft got messy, it seems like the Qwest and Verizon courtship of MCI could top it. The only thing that's likely to come out of it in the short term, however, are massive distractions for all involved. Competitors to all three companies should be thrilled right about now.

The intern strikes back

The intern strikes back 06/02/2004 03:23 PM
The intern accused of having an affair with Kerry does some investigative reporting of her own.

And so my education had taken me pretty much as far as it could. I started out as an ambitious young woman inspired by politics and the media. I’ve ended up disenchanted with both. If I had been an ambitious young man, this story would not have happened. I’m never going to know exactly what happened, but that matters less to me now. I lost a good friend and learned a few lessons. I am struck by the pitiful state of political reporting, which is dominated by the unholy alliance of opposition research and its latest tool, the Internet. Even the Wall Street Journal’s Website ran Drudge’s story, with only a brief disclaimer that his stories weren’t always accurate.

It was important for me to set the record straight. I don’t mean to dredge up old news by writing this, and I’m not trying to create any now, though I’m not unaware of the irony that I am adding to the ink spilled on this story. I don’t intend to discuss it again in public either. But for me, this painful experience will be hard to forget. It may be only a minor footnote to the campaign, but it has changed my life completely.

My one-month-old Thinkpad X40 needs a new motherboard. Yesterday, it stopped noticing what was plugged into its USB ports. Today it can't find its audio board. IBM has authorized the repair. This occurred while I was on the road, lending credence to the theory that my electrical problems are not due to bad wiring in my house but in fact stem from some sort of perturbance in my aura. Or possibly an electrolyte balance. Ultimately, I think, we have to blame it on Karl Rove. By the way, not having my laptop for the next few days is pretty much...

Lightning: Mozilla Strikes Again

Lightning: Mozilla Strikes Again 12/28/2004 10:47 AM

Given the growing success of Firefox, a new Mozilla-based project code-named 'Lightning< /a>' may be worth keeping an eye on.

Lightning is the working project name for an extension to tightly integrate calendar functionality (scheduling, tasks, etc.) into Thunderbird.

[...]

Q. Is Lightning meant as a competitor to Outlook?

A. With Lightning, Mozilla Thunderbird will have a set of user features that is much more competitive with Outlook, especially in enterprise usage. The primary goal of Lightning is to provide a pleasant and productive user experience for both email and calendaring tasks, largely independent of specific competitors' product plans. If the result of the Lightning project is an acceleration of users' migration from Outlook to Thunderbird, though, very few tears will be shed.

Thunderbird with calendaring features would be very cool.
