MSN to revamp MSN Video & MSN Music
today
08/16/2004 02:34 PM

MSN are due to upgrade their MSN Video and MSN Music services today. The two services have been in beta testing for around 6 months and are finally ready to go live later today.

The services are based on the new "Royale" theme-ing that is part of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and Windows Media Player 10. Both MCE 2005 and WMP10 are due to launch later this fall. MSN Music has been re-designed to compete with services like Apple's iTunes and Roxio's Napster. MSN Music will offer music downloads at $0.99 but it's not clear whether users will be able to use these on portable devices.

MSN Video offers the latest headlines, sports, weather and movie trailers for users of MSN Entertainment.

Check out the new services below, we'll update the post once they're live.

Dance, Voldo, Dance is a music video made by synchronizing the movements of gladiators from the game Soul Calibur with a dance track, so that they appear to be getting down with their nasty selves to the music. It's quite good! 11.2 MB Quicktime Link (via Waxy)

Music and Video Downloading Moves Beyond P2P

About 36 million Americans—or 27% of internet users—say they download either music or video files and about half of them have found ways outside of traditional peer-to-peer networks or paid online services to swap their files, according to the most recent survey of the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The Project’s national survey of 1,421 adult Internet users conducted between January 13 and February 9, 2005 shows that 19% of current music and video downloaders, or about 7 million adults, say they have downloaded files from someone else’s iPod or MP3 player. About 28%, or 10 million people, say they get music and video files via email and instant messages. However, there is some overlap between these two groups; 9% of downloaders say they have used both of these sources. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent for results based on internet users. In all, 48% of current downloaders have used sources other than peer-to-peer networks or paid music and movie services to get music or video files. Beyond MP3 players, email and instant messaging, these alternative sources include music and movie websites, blogs and online review sites.

Perpendicular Hard Drive Music Video

Perpendicular Hard Drive Music Video 04/11/2005 08:18 AM

get_perpendicular.jpgOMG, it's School House Rock for hard drives!

I'm just a lonely little bit
And on my back I sit
Oh, how I long to be
Standing tall and feeling free
We need expanded membership
But that would make us flip
And meet an end that's too abrupt
Because our data's corrupt

We missed this last week, but if you can watch this with a straight face, full with the knowledge that it's produced by Hitachi, there might be something seriously wrong with you. Especially when the bits start singing "Get Perpendicular!" Either way, it's quite possibly the most accessible White Paper I've ever seen, and does a great job explaining pernpendicular data storage as a way to counteract the super-paramagnetic effect. IBM would have never done something this cool.
