Hello Kitty Desktop Vacuum

Hello Kitty Desktop Vacuum 08/16/2004 12:41 PM

soujiki_d50_small.jpg imageI would have posted this up about 5 minutes before now, but I noticed they only had three more in stock, so I thought I should get there before you punks. Because lord knows, there's nothing that goes together more sweetly than a distended Hello Kitty head and a light, battery-powered sucking force. And for $10, even! If this thing moves itself around by itself - something that I'm sad to say probably isn't the case - I would buy 24 of them and set them loose around the house. It'd be cheaper than a Roomba and at least 24 times as cute.

Also, have you noticed people saying kawaii a lot lately, too? I doubt they are doing the clap and giggle. You gotta do the clap and giggle.

400,000 Vacuum Bots by 2006?

400,000 Vacuum Bots by 2006? 11/11/2003 01:16 AM
CNN has an article touting Hitachi's vacuum robot. Yeah, yeah, "big deal" I said to myself. But, what was really interesting to me; was that in the article it states that a UN study says that the vacuum cleaner robot sales are to soar to over 400k units by 2006. I'm aware that this has been reported before and also again back in the past, but when the numbers hit me... Wow! But, me without a robot vacuum company and in 2006 there'll be sales of 400k vacuum robots! That really... [no... I refrain]. Despite their high price tag, (well, actually the price of at least one isn't so bad) it appears that people love their home vacuum bots, and time is getting scarce. There could be also be as many as 125k lawn-mower bots, and up to 1.5 million robot toys like Sony's AIBO robotic dog in just a couple years. Wow, big numbers, I know, but still the magnatitude finally hit me and I guess I was a little stunned, and maybe it WAS a little surprising to me. Is it just me? I guess it's time for me to dust off my vacuum bot designs and get on the bandwagon - there's money to be made and time's a wastin.

iRobot's Non-Vacuum Robot 04/07/2005 12:44 PM

Roomba is making something that isn't a vacuum, to be introduced this year:

"It's going to happen this year. You'll see something new from iRobot that's not a vacuum," said Colin Angle, chief executive and co-founder of iRobot. "We're pretty excited about it."

The new robot likely will leverage technology from the Roomba for a task like mopping floors or cleaning bathrooms, says Neena Buck, an analyst with Strategy Analytics.

Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum

Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum 12/02/2003 12:23 AM
Several News agencies such as MobileMag have declared: Samsung Unveils High-tech Robot Vacuum Cleaner Samsung's robotic vacuum cleaner, identified as VC-RP30W, vacuums your house the smart way: it makes a 3D map and knows which areas of your house needs cleaning. This is contrary to a recent article that says mapping less is better. This is also contrary to popular robotic vacuums that just bounce around your house unwittingly with hopes of eventually vacuuming all the floor. This robot is no dummy. The battery life lasts about 50 minutes a charge and when the battery gets low, it goes back automatically to the charging station for a recharge. You can program it to your desired start times to start when you're away, and you can even monitor the vacuum from work doing its work with an internet connection and its internal camera. With all this robotic intelligence and obvious great design and crafting, you can guess why there's no mention of price or availability yet, but with camera, internet connection, charging station, etc, I don't expect it to be as cheap as a Roomba but at least it's got to be some kind of world's first great vacuum cleaning robot for Samsung!

Hello Kitty Guitar

Hello Kitty Guitar 09/01/2004 09:36 AM

Although this Hello Kitty guitar is about four times the price of what I'd actually want to pay for it... hey, Hello Kitty guitar! The Fernandez-made electric has a built-in speaker and amplifier so you can plug a headphone right in and start writing your ode to ultimate adorability. And while the polka dot version is shown here, there is apparently a matching sparkly pink version the guy selling these can get a hold of. Now we're talking something worth $400.

What acolyte of rock wouldn't be proud to walk through a smokey club with a matching pink gig bag? None I would prefer to rock to, that's for sure.

Hello Kitty Robot

Hello Kitty Robot 07/12/2004 08:52 AM

hello_kitty_robot.jpg imageI know that Sanrio's Hello Kitty is sort of hackneyed, but it's hard not to appreciate the sheer force of an entity that has for thirty years been the centerpiece of a full-on marketing onslaught -- especially one so free from use or meaning. Hello Kitty is marketing Zen, or maybe the lightless black hole of product development. If you gaze into Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty gazes also into you.

So to celebrate three decades of soul-sucking kawaii frenzy, Sanrio has developed, among other products, a $3,700 Hello Kitty Robot. I know! Come inside to find out the details, and we'll giggle and clap and jump together.

Hello Kitty has a blog. Ms. Kitty blogs (in Japanese, of course), moblogs, links to her friends, writes of her latest jewelry likes and dislikes, and so on--just like any other blogger worth their salt ;-).

As if that weren't enough, Jo i Ito pinged me when he noticed that the blog, a joint Sanrio/NTT Data project, is running on Blosxom. Take a gander at the RSS output at http://diary.hello kitty.ne.jp/blog/index.rss:

Is Hello Kitty a Copycat?

Is Hello Kitty a Copycat? 09/12/2004 11:51 PM
Xeni Jardin: A blogger who describes himself as an "extraordinary ordinary guy in Japan" says this on the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty:
"Kitty's design was just a crib from ... Musti, created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998) [Ed note: she's the center figure in the BoingBoing graphic at left]. Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood. Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it. It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact."
I'm no Hello Kitty historian, and that's news to me. Is it true? Link to post. This guy has a cool blog. His post about Japanese "jinxes" was also interesting.

On a related note, don't miss the image of "Hello Kitty De Milo" in this news story, which is, like, so obviously a total ripoff of some Greek art dude. Link (Thanks, Brian)

Update: OMG! This is turning into one big plushy piracy clusterfuck! BoingBoing reader Eva says, "See my response on Hello Kitty vs Musti here. Basically, I think Musti is in turn a rip off of the Dutch rabbit Miffy, which was published more than a decade before Musti." Link

Baker_vs_robot.jpg imageIn an amazing bit of promotion for iRobot (the company, not the travesty), one of the new Roomba Discoveries has written a comparison review for San Diego Source, putting an Electrolux Trilobite and columnist Phil Baker in an head-to-head deathmatch to answer the home automation question of our time: Can an $1,800 euro-robot clean floors more effectively than a technology columnist? Surprisingly, while Phil Baker is almost $1,500 cheaper than the Trilobite (at $250), his performance stands up fairly compared to the more expensive model, although he does have a tendency to leak some dust out of his waste pan when picked up. Score one for the journos!

dyson_DC11.jpg imageI don't know when they hit U.S. retail channels, exactly, but it looks like the Dyson DC11 'Telescope' vacuum is now available in the U.S. Amazon has it for $500. The idea behind Dyson vacuums is that a bagless 'cyclone' section continually provides suction separate from the filter and collection so that collected dust and dirt doesn't clog up the airflow. Guess it is the DC11 I've been seeing on bus stops and not the DC08. Also, I have no idea if they're any good -- I just like them because they're yellow.
