Windows Update: A Worthy Addition
Windows Update: A Worthy Addition
08/16/2004 10:29 AMMy colleague Mike Langberg and have done a one-two series of columns
on Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Mike, in
this column today, says:
"It's also
important to know that SP2 is a floor, not a ceiling, when it comes to
computer security. You still need to separately buy, install and
update anti-virus software. You'll also be safer with a stronger
firewall than what's provided with SP2, either by purchasing a piece
of firewall software or installing a home router that acts as a
hardware firewall."
Meanwhile, my
Sunday column says the update is Microsoft's best attempt yet at
security (yes, faint praise), and that it "highlights the enduring and
more fundamental reality of modern computing, including the risks that
accompany our mostly captive allegiance to a monopoly product."

script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script

the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program,
or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This

Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AMThanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven
They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows
Update v6, now dubbed
Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000,
2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an
ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office
2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to
get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft
software.
Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new
software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see
the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't
seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users
will have to have
at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Treasures
A Worthy Cause: Iraq's Archeological
Treasures
04/28/2004 08:21 PMThe looting which followed the invasion of Iraq was a terrible shock
for many people, and the hand-wringing and worry which followed showed
that many, including this author were convinced that some of the
oldest and least-studied recordings of history, the Cuneiform Archive,
had been lost
and possibly destroyed. It also seemed clear that thousands of
priceless artworks had been stolen and spirited away, with the
administration more than happy to call the looting an "inside job",
disregarding the fact that the protection offered these priceless
relics by the US military forces was minimal at best, and very late in
coming. The administration, as usual, was painting with a very wide
brush - but so were the rest of us.

New Windows Update
New Windows Update
08/14/2004 07:58 AMThe Windows Update
site has been, well, updated. I was doing some maintenance
on my parents' machines last night at about 10 p.m. and everything was
as it usually is.
However, right now at 6:19 a.m. the next morning, the Windows
Update site is sporting a new look, asking me to download new scanning
software, and has "v5" in the URL instead of the normal "v4." The new
software lets you choose if you want to scan only for critical
updates, or for all updates.
With my luck, someone's spoofing it and I'm being hacked as I write
this.

Update for Windows XP (KB838989)
08/31/2004 12:31 AMWhen you connect a Pocket PC handheld device to a USB 2.0 hub or turn
off the device and then turn it back on while the device is still
connected to the USB 2.0 hub, Windows may not redetect the device.
This problem may also occur with other USB devices that have pending
transfers if the device is disconnected and then reconnected, or if
the device is turned off and then turned back on while it is still
connected to the USB 2.0 hub. After you install this item, you may
have to restart your computer.
