Fast Food Nation
04/21/2004 11:43 PMIn light of McDonald's decision to team with Wayport, how many other
chains are left? In an interview earlier today with Jeff Damir, a VP
at Cometa Networks, he noted that there were many, many other
quick-service restaurants (QSR) out there to talk to who might have an
audience more interested in Wi-Fi hotspots. Sure enough, QSR Magazine
has a list of the top 50 QSR chains by dollar volume as of 2002. Only
two of these chains, Starbucks and McDonald's, have a comprehensive
Wi-Fi plan. Panera and Schlotzsky's have Wi-Fi in some locations with
plans for expansion. The total number of chain stores in the top 50
are 117,468, a staggering number, of which about 15 percent are
committed to have Wi-Fi within a couple of years....

My new favorite fast food joint
My new favorite fast food joint
05/13/2004 02:22 AMI caught this story about
Burgerville in the NYTimes last month and was intrigued to hear
that an Oregon fast food place was doing seasonal items and using
local meat and produce, just like a high falutin' restuarant. I had
seen Burgervilles often since I moved to Oregon and I've ignored them
all this time because they appeared to be some local-yokel chain with
a generic, boring name and exterior to match.
Today I finally checked them out and I was blown away. Now, I've
read Fast
Food Nation, and I know pretty much everyone in the industry is
panned except for In-N-Out. I enjoy In-N-Out burger whenever I'm in
California, but after trying Burgerville, I have to say that if
Schlosser wrote about them, there's no doubt he would have praised
them more than In-N-Out.
The following is a partial list of what they have going for them.
Every couple of months, whatever's in season is an item on the menu,
and they buy from local producers. My strawberry shake tonight was
loaded with a ridiculous amount of chunked fresh strawberries. They
offer not one but two different veggie burgers on the menu. They let
you add local favorite Tillamook cheese to burgers, just like I have
at home. The turkey burgers are made with only cage-free birds. All
the beef is Oregon-raised and fed vegetarian diets so you'll never
have a mad cow problem. The fish and chips use halibut caught in the
Northwest. All buns come from an area bakery. They had nutrition info
right on counter, clear as day. And while waiting for my food inside
one of their locations today, I noticed in a rack of information on
the company there was a pamphlet explaining some healthy environment
certification that the chain received because they only buy from
responsible farmers and ranchers. Crazy, no?
The food was great, better than what I expect from fast food, but
the company philosophy and the way they conduct their business really
blew me away. It's not everyday you find a place with a drive-thru
selling greasy burgers that cares about anything aside from the quick
buck. I think I may have found something better than In-N-Out and I'm
glad to know it's in my new home state.

Home Is Where The WiFi Is (And In Some
Fast Food Restaurants)
Home Is Where The WiFi Is (And In Some
Fast Food Restaurants)
01/07/2004 06:35 PMA new study shows that
more
and more homes are likely to get WiFi connections. This seems
like one of the more obvious predictions around, but it's still
interesting to look at the numbers. The study points out that there
are currently about 100 million broadband connections to the home
worldwide - and only 5 million home users have WiFi. However, with
the technology getting cheaper every day, and the clear benefit of
having a wireless network in the home, it's likely to grow pretty
rapidly (and, of course, that 100 million number isn't static either).
This leads to two thoughts: (1) we still need to make setting up a
WiFi network easier. Early adopters will mess around with finicky
access points, but most users won't. It really needs to be plug and
play. (2) Once more homes get WiFi, expect the unexpected in how
they're used. Just like businesses are discovering - once that
wireless network is there, there's no reason not to use it for other
purposes as well. More devices are going to come with WiFi, and if
they can just hop on an existing network, people are going to come up
with all sorts of creative uses. Meanwhile, McDonald's continues
their "we'll test a different location every few months" rollout of
WiFi, as they've agreed to
WiFi up over 500 restaurants
in the UK. It looks like they're just teaming up with BT to be a
part of BT's Openzone WiFi offering. That doesn't seem like the best
choice, since already there are (reasonable) complaints that
Openzone's pricing is way too high for what people get. In early
tests in the US McDonald's was using a very smart pricing plan (buy a
meal, get an hour of free service). It's unclear why they're not
going with a similar plan in the UK. By offering up service with a
meal, the internet access becomes a promotion to get more people into
the restaurant. By charging insanely high fees for it, it doesn't
bring in too many extra people, and certainly won't bring in much
money.

Intel adds bolts for Microsoft's chains
06/05/2005 11:10 PMIntel apparently has added "Microsoft-flavored" DRM to its Pentium D
and 945 chipset. Hannibal at ArsTechnica guesses: From what I can
tell, DTCP is essentially a protocol that sits on top of TCP/IP and
provides DRM by ensuring that both endpoints in an IP connection are
trusted before transmitted protected content. I imagine that Intel's
DTCP support is some kind of hardware-level means of enabling the
strict enforcement of this endpoint authentication in software. As to
what specific form this enablement takes, only further digging on our
part and more revelations from Intel will tell. This would,
apparently, prevent unwanted...
