Apple should purchase TiVo. What do you think? Would it be two cults

01/03/2005 12:03 PMApple Computer may acquire TiVo during 2005 in a bid to become a major
player in the digital home, suggests a new report by Forrester
Research.
"The Battle For The Digital Home," a new report from Forrester
Research, Inc., evaluates ten industries, including consumer
electronics, PC, content, games, telecommunications, and cable, that
are vying for control of the digital home. It concludes that some
industries are better positioned for success, but all must focus on
capturing and controlling new revenue streams through key
cross-industry partnerships and acquisitions.
Because the digital home power positions traverse industry lines,
Forrester sees many partnerships forming during the next three years.
Potential digital home alliances include: Apple's acquisition of TiVo,
providing Apple with a service platform for TV and video on-demand; a
joint venture between the NFL and FOX to create an immersive
experience where sports fans can choose viewer-selected camera angles
and split-screen content; Sony's acquisition of Clear Channel to
combine Sony's music and devices business with Clear Channel's radio
stations to offer personalized time-shifted digital radio; Google's
acquisition of TV Guide's interactive program guide allows it to
deliver a best-in-class personalized media application – video search;
a partnership between Microsoft and BellSouth, Verizon, and SBC to
provide an operating platform for IPTV, and finally, Disney's
acquisition of Electronic Arts.

TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AMFollowing up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk
potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas
Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a
message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along
the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may
miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is
pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks
the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was
right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.
Tech maven Meg Hourihan
adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that
the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned
that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on
time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I
might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo
still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what
the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo
kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time
as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable
box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it
live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major
screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that
message!"

Intel and Tivo Team Up on Tivo-to-Go

Intel and Tivo Team Up on Tivo-to-Go
(But How?)
06/06/2005 12:09 AMReuters is running a story about Intel that is chocked full of goo
info, including information that their 'Manitoba' mobile chipset has
finally found a customer in mmO2 Pic (the Manitoba came out two years
ago, to little fanfare, let alone actual adoption by phone
manufacturers). But the big news is that Intel will be working with
Tivo to provide Tivo-to-Go functionality in future laptop chipsets,
like their popular Centrino.
What that is, though, is unclear. Is it just a branding initiative?
Tivo-to-Go already works on laptops (that's half the point), so will
it be some sort of native support that makes it easier to move the
Tivo content around? We don't know—the article is very
vague—but at least Tivo is getting some name dropping love from
a mega-vendor (considering it was unlikely they were going to get much
help from Microsoft, considering they sell a competing product to
Windows XP Media Center). (Thanks, Pat!)

02/01/2005 09:42 PM Apple reclaims world's leading brand crown from
Google:
The US-based computer giant was voted the most influential
brand of 2004 in a survey of about 2,000 advertising executives, brand
managers and academics, conducted by Brandchannel. The magazine's
parent company, Interbrand, said that Apple Computer's re-dominance in
the latest survey was driven by the iMac computer and the
trend-setting iPod music players. The online search giant, Google,
descended to the second position in the latest survey, after having
held the top position in the past two years.
Apple upgrades laptop
line:
US computer company Apple has launched a new

Misc. Apple News
Misc. Apple News
03/14/2005 04:34 PMThere are many news items concerning Apple over the weekend, some good
and some not so good. Let's throw them all in a one news article and
see what happens.
Apple won round one of their court case to divulge the sources of the
three online publications. There will be at least one appeal, but the
foundation has been laid and a strong precedent has been set which
denies journalistic rights to online publications and blogs. It's
tough for Apple fans to see their company turning into another
Microsoft where fiscal concerns over-shadow the people concerns.
On a high note, the best is getting better. In a surprise move, the
next version of OSX, Tiger, is being rumored to have an April 15th
release date. When I was at MacWorld in January, Jobs told us that
Tiger would be out in Mid 2005. This would be sooner then expected.
OSX is considered the Cadillac of operating systems and the
improvements in Tiger will make it the OS to have.
We also seen another appearance of
CherryOS, a Mac emulator for PCs. According to folks that have
looked at the code in CherryOS, it has many similarities to PearPC. Best
thing is to leave the dust settle before getting involved with this
project.
