The Underground History of American Education
You aren’t compelled to loan your car to anyone who wants it, but you are compelled to surrender your school-age child to strangers who process children for a livelihood.... If I demanded you give up your television to an anonymous, itinerant repairman who needed work you’d think I was crazy; if I came with a policeman who forced you to pay that repairman even after he broke your set, you would be outraged. Why are you so docile when you give up your child to a government agent called a schoolteacher?

Great Power, Great Restraint... 08/05/2004 02:26 PM
Anakin learns that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one in Star Wars: Republic #67, released this week. Randy Stradley, Brandon Badeaux, and Brad Anderson tell a tale that balances power and restraint as Anakin and Obi-Wan face off against the Separatist forces on the planet Zaadja, while Master Tohno infiltrates the Geonosian droid factory on a demolition mission she is not expected to survive. Ever wonder why the Mandalorians are nowhere to be seen in the Clone Wars? The answer may lie in this issue! All under a cover by Brian Ching. You can check out an online preview here< /a>.

Steven Bags PLA!

Steven Bags PLA! 12/19/2004 03:36 PM

Blogging at ALA Midwinter - Be a Part of it

I will be working with the Public Library Association on an official weblog (you heard that right - official). We will be kicking it off by reporting on PLA-related events at ALA Midwinter. This is going to be huge. Very huge. There will be photographs. There will be interviews with presenters, attendees, exhibitors, and PLA members. There will be reports from the meetings (if allowed), keynote addresses, dinner meetings and networking functions. There will hopefully be special reports from committee members. My point? We're going to blog it and we're going to blog hard. And, we're going to do it right.

Why do I say we? Because I need your help.

I am looking for a bunch of people (20 or so) who will be willing to report on the conference and post to the PLA blog....

Steven gets one of the biggies! Help him out, because this will be the start of something big. Congratulations, Steven - way to go!

Competing in High Gear

"Innovative, enthusiastic and excited about their profession, 'the new generation of librarians is really starting to take hold,' said Steven Cohen, a law librarian at Rivkin Radler in Uniondale....

One time he was able to help the firm get a jump on a case when he discovered an article that reported one of its clients was being sued, before either the client or his lawyer knew about it. 'I printed it out and I ran down the hall and handed it to his attorney and said, 'They've been sued,' he recalled. The attorney was able to inform the client before he found out from someone else and get right to work. 'The lawyers were running down the hall screaming, 'Cohen did it! Cohen found the case!' That was a good day. It is so great being able to bring them the information.' " [Newsday]

Steven Levy on Trusted Computing

Steven Levy on Trusted Computing 12/11/2003 09:38 AM
Steven Levy, author of Hackers and Crypto, has a fantastic piece on Newsweek's site about the potential dangers of Trusted Computing.
How could the freedom genie be shoved back into the bottle? Basically, it's part of a huge effort to transform the Net from an arena where anyone can anonymously participate to a sign-in affair where tamperproof "digital certificates" identify who you are. The advantages of such a system are clear: it would eliminate identity theft and enable small, secure electronic "microtransactions," long a dream of Internet commerce pioneers. (Another bonus: arrivederci, unwelcome spam.) A concurrent step would be the adoption of "trusted computing," a system by which not only people but computer programs would be stamped with identifying marks. Those would link with certificates that determine whether programs are uncorrupted and cleared to run on your computer.

Steven Frank’s tip for improving
your RSS

Steven Frank’s tip for improving
your RSS
01/18/2004 06:02 PM
Steven Frank has a great simple tip for improving your RSS: subscribe to your own feed (or feeds).

What if your feed appears weird, or doesn’t appear at all, in NetNewsWire? Validate it. Ctrl-click on the subscription and choose Validate this Feed. (Yes, this command should also be in the main menu. In the future it will be.)

It the feed is valid, but NetNewsWire does something strange, then let us know about it: it’s mostly likely a bug.

But if the feed is not valid, you have a few options for fixing it:

1. If you’re running your own software, then you may have a bug to fix.

2. If you’re running someone else’s software, but you’re using a customized template or script to generate your feed, check your work.

3. If you’re running someone else’s software, but you haven’t customized anything, report a bug to the person or company who created your software. Be sure to include the URL of your feed, so they can validate it too and see what the problem is. (Important: be nice. Software has bugs. Most developers are conscientious and work hard at fixing bugs.)

Steven Johnson's coming to town!

Steven Johnson's coming to town! 03/06/2004 01:49 AM

Celebrated author Steven Johnson is coming to the San Francisco Bay area this week! He's doing a couple of appearances -- Stacy's in town tomorrow (Monday) at 12:30, and Keppler's in Menlo Park on Tuesday at 7:30. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Johnson wrote Mind Wide Open, Interface Culture, and Emergence, along with loads of Magazine and Newspaper articles, inclusing one on Technor ati's Breaking News service for Discover Magazine. Steven has a total knack for explaining and describing complicated science and theory in simple terms, while never losing the beauty and art of the idea or technology in the metaphor. I'll be doing everything I can to make it over to Stecey's for lunch...
