Local Phone Companies Want To Block In-Coming Mobile Calls

Local Phone Companies Want To Block
In-Coming Mobile Calls

Local Phone Companies Want To Block
In-Coming Mobile Calls
08/16/2004 05:00 AM

The telephone system works because the owners of various networks agree to accept calls from other networks. What would happen if one network decided not to accept calls from certain other networks? It looks like folks in (or calling into) Iowa may find out at some point. The East Buchanan Telephone Co-op announced plans to block all calls from mobile phones to its customers, but he Iowa Utilities Board issued a two-week injunction to stop them from actually going through with it. Unfortunately, the AP article on the topic is a little short on details, but some good ones are provided over on the Interesting People list which gives some background on interconnect fees. Basically, what appears to be happening here (which is not at all clear from the AP article) is that the Co-Op in question is not satisfied with the interconnect rates they're receiving, and this is more or less a way for them to go on "strike" until the mobile carriers agree to pay up. Of course, you'd have to believe that the mobile carriers are in a much stronger position, having a lot more cash, and (in general) being somewhat less concerned if calls are getting through to certain landlines in Iowa. Meanwhile, the customers of the phone companies in the co-op would immediately blame their own phone company for blocking perfectly reasonable calls, and may even push them towards competing phone companies. It is a way for the Co-Op to make some noise to try to get the much bigger carriers to settle this business dispute, but they're clearly coming from a much weaker position. Of course, it also seems highly unlikely that regulators would actually let these phone companies block calls for very long, as the last thing they want to do is give other small telcos any ideas that might put up all sorts of walled gardens in the phone system. Of course, this wouldn't really be all that different from the VoIP world, where Adelphia and Frontier were recently (purposely or not) blockin g VoIP calls from AT&T.

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PM
Last week we noted a new study saying that people get annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the reason for the annoyance is that it shows that we're more curious about what the other party is saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go against the opinion many people have expressed that things like "push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation. In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more phones to make them less annoying. Of course, the study only set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.

On the heels of announcing that only a Chinese-bred Wi-Fi standard will be allowed in China and only Chinese companies can license it, the government has allowed nine more licensees: The names of the new companies have not been released yet and the total licensees is now 20. Foreign companies can make the gear but only with a co-production deal with a Chinese company. Plus, foreign companies must pay their partners to integrate the Chinese standard into their gear while Chinese companies get the license for free. This whole situation is so ridiculous I can't even comment on it. What would happen if the rest of the world tried to prevent Chinese companies from making Wi-Fi gear?...

Update on "Did T-Mobile block TxTMOB
messages during RNC?"
09/07/2004 11:47 PM
Xeni Jardin: In a BoingBoing post last week, one reader wondered if political motivations may have caused T-Mobile's reported "blocking" of messages from activist messaging service TxTMOB. BoingBoing reader Gabe replies:
"I'm a network data analyst for T-Mobile. I've actually tested the network to see why those messages were blocked, and from the response our email-to-sms gateway is giving, apparently our immensely retarded spam filter thinks that txtmob's SMTP server is spamming us. Basically, if the network sees more than about a hundred messages coming from the same SMTP server within an hour, it just blacklists it. Stupid but true."

RNC-NYC: Did T-Mobile block TxTMOB
messages during Convention?

RNC-NYC: Did T-Mobile block TxTMOB
messages during Convention?
09/04/2004 12:23 PM
Xeni Jardin: BoingBoing reader Kevin Slavin says,
When I attended some of the RNC protests on Tuesday ( Link to BoingBoing post), I was depending on txtmob. It was invaluable for staying safe and developing effective protest strategies and tactics.

Right around 5:30 or 6, just as things started to heat up around me, I stopped getting SMS, just like that. I thought it was rather suspicious, but was willing to concede that it could be some technology malfunction. There were more SMSes going out than usual, for the region, and I thought maybe it was an overload. It blew any opportunities I had to effectively co-ordinate with the legal, and civil, RNC protests. So now, as it turns out -- say the txtmob people -- it wasn't technology, it was T-Mobile (my now ex-carrier). Highlighted text below, from the txtmob dispatch: "T-Mobile blocked TXTmob messages during a portion of the RNC. "

My only question is, WTF? Since when does T-Mobile decide which messages are ok, and which aren't? What, in my contract with them, specifies that they can decide which messages I am allowed to get? Who told who to block which messages? I'm no lawyer, but those seem like the kinds of questions that lawyers are interested in.

Following text snipped from a TxTMOB update to subscribers with Subject: TxTMob UPDATE: Post RNC, issued September 3:
Finally, a note for T-Mobile customers: As many of you are aware, T-Mobile blocked TXTmob messages during a portion of the RNC. While we won't speculate on the reasons for this action, it would be extremely helpful if the hundreds of customers who were unable to receive TXTMob messages called T-Mobile to complain. Be sure to explain that TXTMob is an opt-in service that you have chosen to join, and to encourage their representatives to contact admin@txtmob.com if they have any questions.

Quick-'n-Dirty methods to determine
which competing label is better: "Cell
Phone" or "Mobile Phone"?

Quick-'n-Dirty methods to determine
which competing label is better: "Cell
Phone" or "Mobile Phone"?
04/28/2004 11:39 AM

On the SIGIA-L mailing list, Stephanie Berger recently asked: "My cohorts are not sure whether to use "cell phone" or "mobile phone". Any evidence that one is better than the other, or one is used more often than the other?"

This is a good example of the kind of labeling questions information architects face all the time. The answer to these labeling questions will depend on the target audience (a better label for whom?), on business requirements (maybe the business want to promote one term over the other) and on the context in which the label will be used.

I'll discuss the conversation that followed here and afterwards point to some useful tools for if you have a labeling question yourself.

Andres Sulleiro: "Without any empirical data I will go with my own opinion. [...] A quick survey of the phone carriers seems to suggest that "wireless" (as in "wireless phone", "wireless customer") is most common among US carriers, though you see some references to "mobile" as well. T-mobile, a European company, uses "mobile" which is more common in Europe as well as being the name of the carrier."

Method: check what other websites call it.

Jason Cho: "I think "cell" is more widespread in the US as Andrés noted. "Call my mobile" can sound pretentious to Yankee ears. But I would think everyone understands the term "mobile" on a business card."

Method: personal experience.

Peter Van Dijck (and others): "Google for "cell phone" (including quotes): 6,230,000, Google for "mobile phone": 6,360,000. Looks like a tie, assuming your audience is similar. Just pick one and make sure your search engine knows both terms."
Christina Wodtke: "Y ahoo for cell phone : 16,800,000, yahoo for mobile phone: 21,200,000. What does this really tell you? you'd have to know who each engine indexes, how much of the web, etc.. better to use a magic 8 ball. ;-)"

Method: check popularity of the terms on the web.

Peter Van Dijck: "My next step would be to find out what people search for on your site,
or if not available, on the web (assuming that's more or less your audience). Google adwords can help."

Method: Find out what people (preferably your target audience) search for.

Dave: "I like "mobile" for the reason that Christina stated (forward compatibility); USers and non-USers will equally understand it. Also, it is more interoperable w/ most of the vCard based addressbook programs out there. I don't know any that are using "cell" or "cellphone" ... I also like the clear and easy two word approach of "mobile phone" ... I'm always wanting to say "cellphone" where "cell phone" is really the more correct version. "cell" though just doesn't feel like a real word b/c the "cell" doesn't fit a meaning to me. I know what it means if I am forced to think about it, but it really doesn't mean anything to me at all."

Method: personal experience, check what software programs use.

Christina Wodtke: "> As can Ove rture's keyword tool (couldn't find URL straight away).

You also might consider some adaptation of the freelisting technique on a subset of your target. E.G., a write in survey: what portable electronics do you own, then analyze for use of "cell phone" and mobile phone".

Method: freelisting technique.

Eric Reiss: "Having worked closely with several telecommunications companies, including Tellabs (US), Nortel (Canada), ADVA (Germany), and NetTest (Denmark), this discussion is one I've heard before. Europeans generally don't recognize the term "cell phone." North Americans seem to accept both "cell" and "mobile." ATT insists on promoting the term "wireless." In most instances, we've agreed on the word "mobile" since it is understood by the widest audience. Nortel, for instance, used "cell" almost exclusively until the late 90s, but now leans toward "mobile." I think there is a trend here."

Method: ask the subject matter experts.

Pabini Gabriel-Petit: "There's also Wordtracker.
[...]
In this vein, you might try just walking up to people, holding up your cell/mobile phone, and asking them what they call it."

Method: Analyze what people search for.

Method: Find out what labels your users use.

Quick-'n-Dirty methods to determine which competing label is better.

So, as a review, here are some of the methods used to determine which label is better.

1. What do you think?
Method: personal experience/insights.

2. What do your users think?
Method: freelisting technique.
Method: Find out what labels your users use: show them the item you're trying to label and ask them what it is. (You could build an online tool for this).
Method: Find out what people (preferably your target audience) search for / check popularity of the terms on the web. Ove rture's keyword tool. Google adwords. Wordtracker. Google and Yahoo both list how often a term is used on the web (use quotes around your terms!).

3. What do the experts think?
Method: ask the subject matter experts.
Method: check what other websites/software call it.

Gotcha's: be careful when using these techniques. You are looking for a label that works for your audience and your business requirements. Most of these techniques use audiences that may be very different from yours, and most are indicative only (ie: they're not hard science). Use your judgement.

Why can't phone companies go straight?

Why can't phone companies go straight? 03/17/2005 03:23 AM

An interesting juxtaposition... from a couple of months ago:

[Bernard Ebbers,] The ousted chief executive of a giant telecommunications company rocked with an accounting scandal told his congregation on Sunday that he was innocent of wrongdoing. Appearing at Easthaven Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Miss., as usual to teach Sunday school and attend the morning worship service, Bernard Ebbers made his first public comments about WorldCom since the disclosure of $3.8 billion in improper accounting last week, The Wall Street Journal reported."I just want you to know you aren’t going to church with a crook,” Ebbers addressed the congregation at the end of the service.

And from today's London Times:

BERNIE EBBERS, the former chief executive of WorldCom, faces the rest of his life in jail after being found guilty of orchestrating the biggest fraud in American corporate history.  ... The jury of seven women and five men found Ebbers guilty on all counts in a Manhattan court.

Why is it that phone companies are always defrauding either customers or investors or both?

Nepal Wireless project update

Nepal Wireless project update 07/07/2004 02:35 PM
BoingBoing reader Marc says:
After reading this previous BoingBoing post in May about the Nepal Wireless project, I decided to interview Mahabir Pun about his work. Some of the responses surprised me, and many of the decisions are in direct contrast to a project in Laos I covered two years ago: they're using Windows and Microsoft NetMeeting instead of open source; they're not localizing; and social mobility isn't necessarily one of the project goals. I think in many ways the Nepalese project is more successful because it's less ambitious. Mahabir also talks about working while living through the Maoist insurgency.
