gasoline/electric hybrid Prius that ups the available power of the
combustion engine from 77 hp to a whopping 99 hp by increasing the
displacement of the engine to 1.5 liters, and bolstering the
electrical system for a new total rating of 145 HP. Toyota plans to
unveil the sportier Prius at the late September Paris Motor show,
along with an ultra-clean Diesel concept.
Can you just imagine how fast a hybrid V8 would be? Or maybe a
turbocharged V12 hybrid? Or - oh my god - a rocket-powered
hybrid.

Toyota is showing off their new "Toyota Hub" at
the Mondial de l'Automobile this weekend, a centrally-linked
integrated system that orients around a removable PDA, connecting
together the PDA, cell phones, MP3 players, and cameras into an
all-in-one system that intelligently uses the car itself for things
like sound and tactile interface. The best part? This isn't just a
concept system - Toyota plans on offering it as an option as soon as
next month.
If anyone happens to pick up a car with the system we'd love to

parallel-park itself, using a sensor array.
A dashboard display shows the image taken by the camera. When you near
a parking space and shift into reverse, computerized lines pop up on
the display, along with arrows pointing up, down, left and right.
Using the arrows, you move the lines around until they define exactly
where you want the car to be parked. Then you push the "set" button on
the display.
Keep your foot lightly on the brake pedal, and the car will start
backing up, the steering wheel responding to an invisible hand. Voila,
the car will park itself in the spot you've chosen with the arrows.

nearly as good as advertised: "After 150+ miles I averaged nearly 54
mpg."
The key device, which
is about the size of a small box of wooden matches, slides into a slot
in the dashboard. The next step in starting the car, according to the
quickstart guide, is to press the POWER button. I had to laugh —
this car boots up. I really enjoyed pressing that
button.

Speaking of the N-Gage, Sony is now making stink
about various versions of the PSP being released in the future that
may be hybrid integrations of the PSP and cellphones, PDAs, etc. They
let on about this a little at E3. Remember those clear, plastic
overlays they had over the top of all the demo models? At least one of
those had the look of a cellphone keypad. Portagame has a
partially-translated interview with SCEI CTO Masa Chatani, where he
also mentions that Sony still hasn't finalized exactly which screens
the PSP will be using. I wonder if that worldwide LCD shortage is
freaking them out yet.

Gas-electric hybrids are expensive, but you get all that money back in
gas savings, right? Well, probably not.
The study, the latest on break-even points of hybrid cars, shows
that in most cases, an owner would have to drive a hybrid tens of
thousands of extra miles a year or gasoline would have to hit
stratospheric levels to reach a break-even point with a comparable
gas-powered model.
[...] When compared with the smaller, gas-thrifty conventional
Corolla, the Prius wouldn't equal the five-year costs unless it were
driven 66,500 miles a year or gas reached $10.10 a gallon.
Depressing. But the prices will come down, I'm sure.

dual-disc format from Toshiba, JVC is showing a new prototype
triple-layer Blu-Ray/DVD hybrid that puts a 25GB Blu-Ray layer on top
of a coventional two-layer 8.5GB DVD disc. Dual format discs are hoped
to ease the transition from DVD to whatever format will win the
upcoming standards war (probably Blu-Ray).

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which conducts all of its
research in tuneful four part harmony, has developed a system that
uses sunlight (I actually started to write 'solar-powered light')
pumped down fiber-optic tubes to complement an integrated system of
flourscent bulbs. When there's sufficient light outside, a sensor cuts
the electric blubs, letting the light shine in. Obviously, piping
light from roofs to fixtures is something that's best done when the
buildings are actually built, but it's a great idea all the same.
Of course, they don't mention that the light snakes down around
your throat as you sit in satori, attempting to harness the power of
mind to expand your forehead real estate. (Thanks, Boo Boo

08/20/2004 06:20 AMOne of our more reliable tipsters had this little nugget to drop.
Take it for what it's worth:
I was talking to guy in a
waiting room while we were both getting our cars serviced. Turns out
he is some sort of higher up corporate level Nextel employee and he's
impressed that my dad's business is on Nextel.
So I said to the guy, "When are you gonna finally get on the
Bluetooth bandwagon?"
He told me they have a Bluetooth phone in the pipeline they are
calling the "Service Master" that they developed with Motorola
(surprise). Basically he said the only reason they are coming out with
it is that Stanley Steamer, ChemLawn, and a few other companies
comprising some 30,000 accounts demanded the bluetooth technology from
Nextel and that's a big chunk of their business so they decided to
keep them happy.
He didn't give a time frame for the release of the phone but
indicated that the named businesses would be the first to get
them.
