Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law
at Stake
Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law
at Stake
04/20/2004 09:57 AMOur government insists that it can kidnap a foreign national overseas
and hold him forever in a Guantanamo jail, or put him through a
military trial and even execute him. Oh, the government has made a few
cosmetic concessions to law in its plans for military tribunals. But
note that these are unilateral changes and can be withdrawn at any
time.
Our government also insists that U.S. citizens can be declared enemy
combatants and tossed into jail forever, or tried by military
tribunals (and maybe executed), without access to a lawyer or the
courts. If the court endorses this, it's endorsing despotism.

O'Brien says "It is a mistake for UI designers to heed debates
such as going on in Scoble's comments on UI requests for
Longhorn."
Oh, don't worry, I doubt the Aero team will listen to me. But, my
goal wasn't really to get the Aero team to listen to me anyway. It was
to get the market to think about what they'd like to see in Longhorn.
Goal achieved!
My coworkers were chiding me during the day, though. Everyone has

DMA requests no SPAM or telemarketing on
national Day of Mourning
06/10/2004 01:06 PMThe Direct Marketing Association (The DMA) today called on its members
to refrain from making marketing calls and sending commercial e-mails
to consumers on June 11, 2004, which has been designated as a National
Day of Mourning in memory of President Ronald Reagan.
“We are calling on marketers to consider the mood of the country
on this day of national mourning,” said H. Robert Wientzen,
president & CEO, The DMA. “Indeed, many member companies have
already indicated to us that they plan to refrain from calling or
sending commercial e-mail on that day. Businesses should keep in mind
the thoughts of consumers and the reputation of the industry.”
“If members do conduct a campaign, they should do so with the
utmost caution and respect on this solemn day of remembrance,”
said Wientzen.

Postini: Half of all e-mail requests
rejected
07/08/2004 09:09 AMAntispam company Postini Inc. said that it is now rejecting more than
half of all attempts to send e-mail to its customers, due in part to
increased activity from compromised home computers that have been
turned into "zombies" for sending unsolicited commercial ("spam")
e-mail. The company is dropping 53 percent of all e-mail connections
that use the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) without reading the
content of the e-mail messages. That's an almost 20 percent increase
since the company began aggregating information about troublesome
Internet addresses from across its customer base, said Andrew Lochart,
director of product marketing at Postini.
