Michigan may cancel laptop program

Michigan may cancel laptop program 10/29/2003 11:27 AM
What was to be the largest single purchase of computers in history may now history itself. Governor Jennifer Granholm intends to cancel the funding for the "Freedom to Learn" plan, which would have given a laptop to every sixth-grade studen in Michigan. Apple and Dell are considered frontrunners to supply the 130,000 laptops required by the state. The program has not yet been cancelled and many Michigan officials have announced their intention to fight to keep the program in the...

Michigan May Kill Student Laptop Program

Michigan May Kill Student Laptop Program 04/18/2005 02:28 PM
In the past we've written about various "laptops in schools" programs -- mainly in Maine and Michigan where they've been seen as succes s stories in improving education and (most importantly) getting kids excited to learn. While simply adding laptops to schools isn't the answer -- a well designed program designed to really make use of computers in schools to help kids learn and get them interested in education is a good thing. However, a budget crunch in Michigan has the state think ing about killing the program, meaning that some students would have their laptops yanked away, and others may not be able to get laptops at all. You have to wonder, though, if there's a compromise solution. Certainly, some kids already have computers (desktop or laptop) at home -- so perhaps there's a better way to set up the program that focuses more on those kids whose families really can't afford a laptop. Yes, this opens the program up to abuse -- but with the country falling so far behind in education, it seems like a program that seems to get kids excited about learning deserves a bit of support.

Apple Continues Their Program To Hook

Apple Continues Their Program To Hook
Students With Free iPods
07/20/2004 02:45 AM
Hot off the severely overhyped announcement concerning the latest iPod models (er... honestly, they look pretty similar to the old ones) Slashdot has the story that Duke University is giving away "free" iPods to incoming freshman (which won't make the upperclassmen happy, but what can you do?). The "free" is a bit of a misdirection, because most people attending Duke are paying an awful lot of money for the privilege, and I'm sure a slight tuition bump to pay for the iPod will mostly go unnoticed. Of course, this isn't the first time this has been done. Last year we wrote about students at Georgia College & State University receivi ng iPods donated by Apple. While both cases talked about the educational uses of such devices, it's more likely an attempt by Apple to get people hooked early, so when they make big announcements about iPods that really don't seem all that different than the last ones, these kids have to go out and spend their money on them. It's the same strategy Napster is using in signing up colleges.

Plainview Pre-School Launches First
Wireless Laptop Computer Technology
Program for Preschoolers
12/22/2004 01:33 AM
Looking for the perfect Christmas gift for that hard to please 3 or 4 year old? Wireless laptops are at the top of the list for some 100 children at Louisville’s Plainview Pre-school. This fall, students began using wireless laptops in one of the country’s first wireless computer labs just for preschoolers! It is all part of the ground breaking educational approaches at Plainview Pre-School designed to boost preschooler’s brainpower and future college readiness at a cost that won’t turn parents into scrooges. Students receive weekly instruction in the school’s new wireless computer lab plus classroom visits with an assortment of technological equipment including laptops, digital cameras, recording devices, and listening centers. According to the school officials, this gives children a chance to use technology for real problem solving rather than just for entertainment and since appropriate stimuli such as engaging hands-on activities with computers enhances early brain development, the school believes laptops are the perfect choice for a preschooler’s small hand size. The cost for the program is included in the school's unique tuition structure which school officials says offers a high quality program and at a cost well below what many other preschool programs charge. Using peer pressure to your benefit

Using peer pressure to your benefit 04/05/2005 07:31 PM

Announcing something I've been playing with over the past few nights: Fitlog

The reasoning behind the site is in the first post to it, and I'm also fulfilling a promise to try out WordPress, especially the "custom fields" option, which I'm using to track my daily weight, time ridden or run, and distance ridden or run. Since it's all in a database, I'm also using PHP/SWF Charts to plot a live graph of my data over time (eventually I'll graph all the new fields, once I start running and riding more).

So far it's fun and a great motivation to get out and exercise each day, and my hope is that I succeed in front of everyone's watchful gaze instead of failing miserably, which of course, is always a possibility.
