Lookout for Tiger's Logout
08/14/2004 09:48 AMWhile the idea of shutting down — or even restarting — a
Mac is a thought many never consider. With OS X, system crashes have
become all but obsolete and, save the latest upgrade install,
there"s no real reason to shut down.
However, as any diligent tech janitor will tell you, a period cleaning
will help ensure a healthy OS for years to come.
And of course, all those switchers may have an overwhelming need to
restart too.
The speed and stability of OS X has brought new meaning to
"working in the background," and just abut any task can be
done in tandem with another — disc burning, permission
repairing, cache emptying, etc. — and a user is likely to have
five or six apps open whenever the urge to restart hits.
So, when Apple cornered the fast-user switching market, I wondered
when it would tackle the problem of actual logging out. With a few
processor-intensive applications — like, say Photoshop
QuarkXPress, Microsoft Word or even iMovie — quitting, saving
and restarting can be a cumbersome task, one that can take upwards of
two minutes and at times lends to a neverending spinning beach ball.
According to AppleInsider, Tiger is going to cha
nge all that. One of its 150 new features is reportedly
utilizing "Fast Logout and Autosave" technology:
"Tiger"s fast logout and autosave feature will improve
logout, shutdown, and restart operations by reducing the number of
confirmation dialogs presented to the user, all the while protecting
the user"s unsaved data in open applications.
"During a logout, shutdown, or restart operation, Tiger will
determine whether an application should post a confirmation dialog for
unsaved changes or perform an auto-save event. If the application
performs an auto-save event, data will be saved to a special location
on the system and the user will be logged out of Mac OS X. The next
time the user logs in, the system relaunches each application with
auto-saved documents and reconstructs the documents as their state
immediately before the last logout."
While it may not be immediately noticed by the masses, Fast Logout and
Autosave looks to be one of those features that will change the way we
think of shutting down — and offer one more reason for OS X
users to gloat — after all, it"s the little things that
really make the difference.

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM
For embedded computing
hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating
piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard
drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole
deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash
card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection;
that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device
Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining
feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating
specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard
drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when
necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around
$2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives
instead.
