Microsoft collaborates with the Department of Homeland Security, Interpol, and the Canadian Mounties to produce the ultimate people-tracking database, mining email aliases, "chat room" logs, and arrest records. This open-source software developed by MS Canada will be given away free to police departments, says the company. "The initiative was the result of a January 2003 e-mail sent to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates from a member of the Toronto Police Service sex-crimes unit, asking for help in battling child pornography," reports the Seattle Times. "The billionaire, known for his philanthropy in the area of AIDS research and education, called on Microsoft Canada to develop software that would aid police officials." Buried in the enthusiastic accounts of how the Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS) will nail "child sex fiends" is any consideration of how such a system could -- and will undoubtedly someday -- be used against such lesser offenses as drug use, sharing illegal music files, or discussion of political beliefs that could be construed as supporting "terrorism."

Skype taking a bite out of real company

Seeing that I have started a company this year and we are trying to make sure this ones stays in th black from the start, everyone is using Skype as much as possible. Chantal has a Skype Account with Voice mail I have a Skype In Number along with Voice Mail and I spend a lot of hours on Skype not giving a red cent to the phone company.

Am I happy well for a guy that lived in Guam for 7 years and endured $3.50 a minute phone calls back to the United States, you can imagine I am quite happy when I can stick it to the phone company and bypass them. That goes for the cellular folks also. Seems some other companies are on the Skype bandwagon and pretty happy about it themselves. [Business Week]

nokia_5140.gif imageNokia has begun shipping the new 5140 camera phone, aimed at "outdoor and sports-minded consumers." Even better, the rugged phone is Nokia's first push-to-talk phone, so hopefully we'll see it picked up by Sprint or Nextel as an option. As for the fitness part, Nokia has included some software to like stopwatches, a 'Fitness Coach' personal training program, and rugged Xpress-on shells -- one of which even adds GPS capabilities. Sounds interesting, but I think we'll wait to pass judgement until we can play around with one. Also, did someone punch Nokia's designer in the eye the day they came up with the 5140? Maybe they were embarrassed to say they got in a fight or something, so they just went into work anyway and sort of blindly fucked around in AutoCad or whatever until their boss told them they could go home.
