Rebirth (Reuters)

Reuters - The use of a mobile phone to pinpoint a caller's location and nearby businesses was a hot concept when the tech bubble peaked in 2000, but only now with better phones and software does it stand to succeed, companies say. Mobile operators are selling much-improved services that help users locate friends or get directions to the nearest train station, but they have to fight off consumers' bad memories from 2000 and 2001, when they offered illegible maps on tiny black-and-white screens.

Online Music Download Services Compared

Online Music Download Services Compared 04/11/2005 11:01 AM

et_musicserv.jpgIt's probably not news to those of you knee-deep in portable music players, but ExtremeTech has a nice round-up of the current crop of music download services, from iTunes to Napster to AllOfMP3. You know my take on all this (favorite player: iTunes; favorite service: AllOfMP3), but I have to agree with Dave Salvator when he says that Napster To Go is probably the most compelling service out there right now. It's legal, according to the RIAA and copyright structure, and lets you fill up compatible portable players for not a lot of money. I'll only choke down DRM if I have to, though, so it's still quasi-legal Russian AACs for me.

Anyway, if you don't really know what's up with above-the-board music downloading services, this is a good place to start.

Six United States campuses have announced that they will subscribe to the Napster 2.0 music download service. The colleges include Cornell University , George Washington University , Middlebury College , University of Miami , University of Southern California and Wright State University .

The company said that students will be able to use its service to legally send tracks to friends, share play lists and look at other Napster members' music collections. They will also have the option to buy music to burn to CD or transfer to over 75 compatible portable devices for 99 cents per song or from US$9.99 per album.

Several campuses have already signed up, including Penn State .

A series of moves by digital media giants suggest further developments in the growing world of music downloading. Sony decided to allow music files in the popular MP3 format to be played in its devices, a change from its policy restricting usage only to its own Atrac format.

At the same time, Yahoo and Microsoft are exploring using instant message applications to support copyright-clear music file sharing. Both companies recently entered the music downloading market.

American colleges are increasingly turning to such download services as an alternative to copyright problems with peer-to-peer filesharing.

03/25/2005 07:06 AM

Americans continue to download media files , according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project . That behavior is divided between authorized services, such as iTunes or Napster 2.0, and the world of unauthorized, or illicit, filesharing. Broadband users, such as many students, tend to be skeptical of governmental efforts to curb illicit downloading.
