Reactions to being back in the UK...
02/17/2004 07:50 PMWell of course it's the jet-lag that makes tired and frustrated
with the UK. It's the jet-lag that makes me want to be part of a
larger and more productive internet community. It's the jet-lag that
makes me begrudge the local weather. It's the jet-lag that makes me
jealous of the extended social networks and friendships that my gay
friends in the States appear to have. It's the jet-lag that makes me
miss actually going outside and having fun for a change rather than
beating myself up about not doing enough extra-curricular work
activities. It's definitely the jet-lag that makes me angry about how
much everything costs here. It's almost certainly the jet-lag that
makes the rent on my flat the same as a beautiful three-bedroom house
in Korea Town. It's got to be the jet-lag that makes me pine
for a city with a beach or a bay or hills or features or views. Grr. I
will be fine in a couple of days.

Reactions to MobiTV
11/17/2003 11:40 AMWe didn't mention Sprint's new MobiTV television service for
cellphones last week, mainly because we're completely underwhelmed by
the prospect of paying ten bucks a month to watch choppy, one frame
per second video on a cellphone. Douglas Rushkoff's column in The
Feature this week echoes our sentiments, writing that the carriers are
wasting their time trying to foist this on the public. On the other
hand, the first few reviews of MobiTV that have trickled in have been
generally enthusiastic, so maybe it's a bit too soon to write this
whole thing off. Read - The Feature - My Cell Phone is Not a TV Read -

Reactions to the Whither Mono? column
Reactions to the Whither Mono? column
03/19/2003 10:26 PM
Jacques Surveyer has posted a
thoughtful response to my Whither Mono? column. His
item, entitled "Mono is eerily like the disease," says in part:
Take a gander at http://gru
nge.cs.tu-berlin.de/~tolk/vmlanguages.html and the number of
languages that use the Java JVM - about 3-4 times as many languages
that use .NET. But the really insidious notion is that .NET is
"language neutral". As Visual Basic and Cobol developers have learned
to their dismay - adopting a language to conform to the CLI/CLR/.NET
Libraries means a number of Frankenstein-like cut and add operations.
In the case of VB it is so bad that Microsoft's own enginers started
to call VB.NET Visual Fred because it is so different from its
predecessor, VB6.
Adds
Kevin Altis, in
an email quoted with permission:
We do have examples of other
languages running in the JVM. Jython in particular works great, I
don't know
of any "scripting language" that works well in the CLR, only the early
proof-of-concepts which aren't viable for real work. VB.NET is
basically C#
light, so maybe only one language works in the CLR.

Reactions to Symantec’s security report
mixed
Reactions to Symantec’s security report
mixed
03/23/2005 05:20 PMSymantec’s recent report on Internet security has drawn the ire of
many Mac users who see it as a self-serving ploy to guard its own
interests in the $10 million a year security software industry.
Many of the mainstream media have been running news stories with
headlines that scream “Macintosh Hacker Attacks on the Rise”, while
several Mac enthusiast websites went on the defensive, attacking
Symantec for trying to boost sales of its Mac software.
Symantec claimed in its report that as Apple regains marketshare
(highest being 15.82 per cent in 1984 with the Apple II), the number
of malicious hacker attacks will also rise. In an article posted on
its website today, The Mac Observer (TMO) quotes David Cole, Symantec
product management security response director, as saying there is no
actual data to prove a connection exists between security risks and
increased marketshare.
"It's reasonable to assume that with in increase in market share and
popularity comes an increased interest by the hacker attacker
community to go after the Mac. No platform is absolutely free of
vulnerabilities and no users at the end of the day are impervious
because they use a particular product," Cole said in the article.
Cole said the biggest "holes" for hackers to attack are
vulnerabilities in browsers. Between July 1 and December 31, 2004,
Symantec documented 13 vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft IE, nine
considered high severity. Six vulnerabilities were reported in Opera
and none in Apple's Safari browser.
TMO says the report called the zero number of confirmed Safari
vulnerabilities "somewhat surprising given the increasing popularity
of Mac OS X," but suggested that as the browser grows in usage, so
will the attacks.
Mac users do have a valid point in remaining skeptical of Symantec’s
intentions. The $10 million security software industry has been so far
dominated by Symantec and McAfee, both of whom now face a drop in
marketshare as Microsoft enters the security game with the
acquisitions of Sybari, a company that specialises in combating
viruses and spam, and Giant, which creates anti-spyware.
Microsoft aims to be a serious force in the security software industry
and it makes sense to cut out the middle man. Perhaps Mac users would
rather their enhanced security products came from Apple itself, rather
than third party vendors who seem to have a vested interest in finding
new “threats”.
