alt="pez_mp3.gif image" width="188" height="200" class="right"/>My
buddy and I were just talking tonight about sticking electronics
inside of a Pez dispensers. Coincidentally, I came across this link
for a PEZ dispenser turned MP3/WMA/OGG player. In fact, the creator
managed to strike up a deal with Pez Inc. and will market this as an
actual product. Now all that's left to do is figure out how to make it
dispense candy and music.

JNC SSF-M5: Yet Another 1.5GB MP3 Player
JNC SSF-M5: Yet Another 1.5GB MP3 Player
06/29/2004 08:49 AM
Today, I make an
iron-clad prediction: by this time next year, you'll be able to get
1.5GB MP3 players at Wal-Mart (or your local indigenous people
exploiter of choice) for $50, or free when you sign up for a new Sears
card. I mean, these things are just crawling out of the woodwork, like
this JNC SSF-M5, which as DAPreview notes, has a sharp resemblance to
the recently announced Teac MP-1000. Don't get me wrong, though; I
think cheap, disposable 1.5GB players are fantastic. That's about as
small as I'd want to go in a player, since I tend to sort of eyeball
these by 'album quantity,' and 15-25 is an ample number.
When is Fisher-Price going to get in the game? Disney Electronics,
do you still hate me? Because if not, I'd like to see a sub-$100 model
pre-loaded with a bunch of your movie soundtracks.

Don't get "NHC" confused with "NHJ," because the
latter also introduced their own player today. Dubbed the "VHD-5100,"
it features a 5GB hard drive, a 1.6" 128 x 128 color display, MP3/WMA
playback, and JPEG playback. This one also has the USB Host function,
and it becomes all the more useful with a 5GB capacity. It does not,
however, offer video playback.

hard drive for storage. The iFP-599T also has a built-in FM tuner and
recorder, digital voice recorder, armband strap (for using it during
exercise), and a battery life of up to 28 hours. The advantage, of
course, of having a player with Flash memory rather than a hard drive
is that there are no moving parts that can be damaged when you're
jogging or working out. You'll have to pay for that privilege,
however, as the iFP-99T retails for $450, or almost as much as a 40GB
iPod. Read [Thanks, Chris]...

Is That An MP3 Player In Your Sleeve?
Is That An MP3 Player In Your Sleeve?
07/26/2004 05:31 AMOver two years ago we first wrote about Infineon's
plans
for an MP3-player jacket, which would have the electronics sewn
directly into the jacket. Readers expressed skepticism towards the
idea, and I predicted it would be quite some time before it actually
came to market. However, it appears that a
jacket with a built
in MP3 player and bluetooth gateway to a mobile phone is about to hit
the market. It even has a keyboard/controller built directly into
the sleeve. It also comes with headphones, and a microphone in the
collar. The system will turn off the music and let you switch to the
phone whenever a call comes through. Now, the question is whether or
not anyone actually wants it. It doesn't hold very much music, and as
music players have gotten smaller, does it really make sense to have
that technology sewn directly into your jacket? It really limits the
overall usefulness of the music player, since you need to be wearing
or holding the jacket to use it. Furthermore, since most jackets are
fairly seasonal, it would seem like the MP3 player would be pretty
useless for a good portion of the year. It
might make sense as
a fairly expensive gateway system, like how it works with a Bluetooth
phone, if they could set up a similar system for just about any music
player that someone could just plug into the jacket.

Napster Giving Away Rio Chiba, Nitrus
with One Year Subscription
06/17/2004 10:06 AM
Whoa ho! Looks like the new Napster is
trying a new tip, offering a free Rio Chiba Sport flash player to
anyone who coughs up the $120 for a one-year subscription to the music
download service. And if the 128MB Chiba isn't enough to entice you
(although it can be upgraded via SD/MMC), you can pick up a Rio
Nitrus, with a 1.5GB hard drive inside (not the 4GB version, I'm
saying) for only $80 more (around $200). Not a great deal, if all
you're interested in is the player, but if Napster has piqued your
interest, it's not a bad way to go.
It's funny, though, to see Napster give away players to promote
their service, when Steve Jobs maintains they keep iTunes Music Store
around to sell iPods.
