I finally received Combat
Mission: Afrika Korps (CMAK) and the companion book The Battery
Commander, His
Batman, and A Cook. Woohoo! While the game was
installing, I checked out
the book. Excellent!
The battle where the book's title came from was that of Combeforce,
a hastily formed
group of 2,000 British anti-tank and artillery crews along with
riflemen to protec
them, trying to block retreating Italian 10th Army.
That's right.
2,000 men facing an army without even a single tank. But then
armies usually
retreat in a line so they had to face only the forward elements and
most of the armies
were on road-bound vehicles (stretching for miles and miles).
As the story went,
the last Italian tank was knocked out by a gun manned by the
commander of 106th Battery,
his batman, and a cook.
And that was just one chapter in the book. While I enjoy
reading calm accounts
of battles like Rommel's classic Infantry Attack, stories like this
really evoke the
smell of the battle through quiet understatements and dry
humor. Only bad part
about the book was that only 12 of the battles in the book had CMAK
scenarios.
Darn. I am going to browse through SMAK scenarios
repositories to see if the
missing scenarios have been created by other CMAK
enthusiasts. I doubt it though
because you need more than just stories to create battle
scenarios. At the minimum,
you need order of battle (OOB) which lists the number and types of
units involved
in a battle.
Firing up CMAK briefly, I remembered why I stopped playing CMBO
(Combat Mission Beyond
Overlord), the first volume of the series. It was the damn
artillery spotters
and 88. A well-positioned gun can stop significantly larger
forces dead on its
track and sometimes the only way to knock them out is with
artillery or aerial bombardments.
But whenever I moved a spotter into position where he can see the
gun, he gets fired
on by the gun. How can they someone far away hiding behind a
bush? Binocular
reflection? Rubbish. Add to that the devastating power
of 88 made me so
fruistrated with a Bocage campaign that I stopped playing for a
month and then forgot
about the game.
With CMAK, unrealistic spotting ability of gunners will make some
sense since there
won't be many bushes to hide behind in. One can hide behind
sand dunes or bury
one self in like commandos do but it's just not the same as hiding
in treelines or
bushes. Anyway, I am looking forward to my desert battles for
many evenings
to come.

« Yölyhdyt [Night Lanterns] by Liisa Kyrönseppä in the Forces of
Light installation in Plague Park. »
Today at lunchtime I looked outside and gaped since it appeared like
it was almost night before noon. I thought we had escaped November
but, perhaps not. I noticed a light therapy lamp in the coffee lounge
and had to resist the desire to go press my eyeballs directly onto the
bulb. My backpack still contains my sunglasses as if I'll need them
for another 5 months or so. Always prepared for solar radiation, every
fleeting moment of it. :)
Since we had to cancel our Feb/March travel plans due to the puppy
coming later than expected Jarkko, in a fit of desperation after
finding all the tours booked between now and when the puppy arrives in
January, found a trip at one of the last minute cancelation agencies
in a warm, arid place during the holidays. It's funny how back in my
20s I travelled all over on a whim and didn't think anything of it and
these days I am less enthusiastic about seeing the world. It bothers
me that I have become so jaded in my advancing age. It is that age old
equation of Money | Time | Energy/Enthusiasm - pick any two. I retain
the curiosity but it is tempered by my cynicism. I had to check to see
if I'd need a visa to enter the country and if anyone ever read the US State
Department's consular information sheets on various countries,
noone would ever leave US airspace. They do make for amusing reading
for those of us who live outside the US. Treat yourself to reading the
language of fear, e.g. Finland;
SAFETY AND SECURITY : Finland remains largely free of terrorist
incidents....
Largely free? What is that supposed to mean? No bombs but the
lihakukko is a very dangerous weapon in the Karelian terrorist regime?
Watch out for the drunks and their puukkos at the tram stops? There is
also a section about how few cops there are in relation to the overall
population. I suppose that living in a police state would make you
uncomfortable visiting a place that doesn't have guys in fatigues and
AK-47's hanging out in airports and on street corners. We're going to
a place where we are warned that there is a lot of 'soccer-inspired
violence' and evangelical christians are given a quick ride to the
airport. :)

02/05/2005 09:48 PMSketch is clearly feeling all the monkey (and monkey-kitty) mojo. I
just talked with his vet, and he told me that Sketch is doing much,
much better. He's almost completely out of congestive heart faliure!
His vet told me that Sketch ate food overnight (as far as we know, he
hadn't eaten all weekend), and that he was out of oxygen, sitting up,
looking around, and being "very, very talkative."
I talked with his vet yesterday evening, and he told me that
Sketch's lungs were about 2/3 less filled with fluid than they were on
Saturday, so he was responding very well to the lasix, and his
breathing was down to about 24 from as high as 50 or 80 (sorry, I
can't remember exactly what it was) when we brought him in yesterday
morning. It was the news I was hoping to hear, and I burst into tears
of relief when I hung up the phone. I made a bit of a spectacle of
myself, but I didn't (and don't) care. My fat guy is getting better.
It was kind of surreal last night to sit in the theatre at ACME and
pitch my sketches for the next show. The word "sketch" was said about
a thousand times (duh) and each time I heard it, my eyes filled up. I
think I'm going to write a sketch about it, though. It could be pretty
funny, once I clean up the gallows humor.
He will get a cardiac ultrasound later today, or early tomorrow,
depending on how he's feeling, and then we'll know what his heart
disease is, and how to treat it. I know he's not out of the woods yet,
but there are rays of hope shining down all around us, and the path is
very clear.
Thank you for all your comments and e-mails. This has been a rough
few days for me and my family. Each time I've heard from someone who
had a similar experience with their cat years ago, I feel a little
more hopeful that Sketch will be another one of those cats who rang
Death's doorbell, then ran down the walkway laughing before He could
open the door.

Desert Island Internet
09/23/2004 03:01 PMIt's one of those slow news days, so here's a post that goes well with
the story the other day about
survi
ving two weeks without the internet. A "desert-island" style
survey that asked people what two media types they would want if they
could only have two, showed that
77% of people
would take the internet as either one of their first or second
choices. In part, of course, this is because the internet can be used
as a replacement for many of the functions served by other media
types. Still, this type of thinking tends to get people confused that
business models for those other media will easily shift online, when
clearly, that hasn't been the case. Just because it's a replacement,
doesn't mean people will pay for it the same way. Being online
changes the business models as well by changing the nature of the
material.
