Clonus (AKA
Parts: the Clonus Horror) was
released on DVD
today. This ultracheap 1979 sci-fi thriller is about a compound where
clones are raised, unaware that their purpose in life is to provide
harvested organs (

MST3K sent it up,

mera Phones Help Buyers Beware
"During the past six months, no fewer than four software firms have
released applications to help consumers turn their camera-equipped
mobile phones into personal bar-cod
e scanners....
Although the technologies are still in their early stages, the
trend is rekindling talk of a shopping revolution.
'Clearly, this is going to change the way people think about
shopping,' said Olivier Attia, chief executive of New York-based Scanbuy,
one of the firms specializing in bar-code-scanning software.
For example, 'with a camera phone that is also a bar-code scanner,
you can go into a store like Barnes & Noble, take a photo of the
ISBN number on a book and instantly receive a coupon offering the book
for 30 percent less at Amazon.com,' said Attia." [Wired News]
Of course, I think the better example is that a person could scan
an ISBN and automatically request the title from their local
library!

When I saw
the Tetris shelves on Kotaku yesterday I called Brave Space design to
see how much they wanted for them. They told me they weren't selling
those pine models, as they were just a prototype, but had just
completed their first production model, which as you can see from this
exclusive picture, is much more swanky—the outside is walnut and
the insides are ash.
My wallet was about to be chiseled from its ham hock when they
informed me of the price: around $7k for 10 pieces. And if you don't
stack them correctly, they disappear and you have to buy them all
over.

1GB SD Cards to Hit Shelves this Month!

Cards Hit a Higher Capacity
"SanDisk has begun production of SD memory cards with a 1GB
capacity and expects them to begin appearing on store shelves before
the end of this month.
SD, or
Secure Digital, cards are widely used in devices such as digital
still cameras. The higher capacity will mean users with large data
storage requirements won't have to carry around as many cards. The 1GB
card should be able to accommodate around 2000 images taken at
1,600-pixel by 1,200-pixel resolution. It should also be able to store
about nine hours of MPEG4 video or 16 hours of MP3 audio.
The company expects the cards to cost around
$500, says Bob Goligoski, a spokesperson for SanDisk." [PCWorld.com]
They can't come down in price fast enough for me.
I'll probably have to give in and get a 256MB card in the interim,
because the 1GB version costs almost as much as the Treo 600
itself!

Human embryo cloning OKed in UK
Human embryo cloning OKed in UK
08/11/2004 08:13 AMRich sez, "British scientists have been granted permission to clone
human embryos for medical research, it was announced today."
They plan to duplicate early-stage embryos and extract stem cells from
them which can be used for radical new treatments.
The embryos are destroyed before they are 14-days old and never
allowed to develop beyond a cluster of cells the size of a pinhead.
The green-light was given by the research licensing body the Human
Fertilisation and Embryology Authority after weeks of discussion.
Dr Miodrag Stojkovic, from the university’s Institute of Human
Genetics, said: “We are all set up and ready to go immediately
as soon as the paper work is sorted out.
