MovableType 3.0
04/29/2004 08:41 PMI don't think I mentioned that Movable Type 3.0 absolutely rocks. I
have been using it for about a week, but I haven't had time to make
TypeKey work and of course upgrading required some template changes
and wiped out my local hacks, but except for a few cosmetic things I
think most things are working alright again. The UI in 3.0 is much
slicker than in 2.6 and it's much better about letting you delete spam
than 2.6 was,...

MovableType New Pricing is Outstanding
MovableType New Pricing is Outstanding
06/18/2004 03:18 AMSix Apart has announced new pricing for MT version 3.0 and I am
quite happy with their decision. Having put my money where my mouth is
I had already purchased an upgrade. I strongly believe that Six Apart
has a long term vision for the product and having programmers on the
payroll who are focused and have a team vision.
The Wordpress vultures are still on the prowl commenting on almost
all articles about the MT licensing issues. With Six Apart set to fast
track improvements to MT it will only be a mater of a few months
before the product overtakes and leaves in the dust the remaining
competition. [Six

Thoughts on The Future of WordPress and
MovableType
03/24/2005 05:06 AMThere more I look at the blogging "market" these days, I see things
falling into fairly well defined places--at least in my head. There is
a already a well defined split between the hosted services that offer
blogging capabilities (Blogger, TypePad, Y! 360, LiveJournal, etc) and
the "host it yourself" model. That second group is the ecosystem that
MovableType and WordPress currently dominate and I think they'll
continue to do so. If you further divide that into
"corporate/enterprise" and "personal/non-profit"...

08/13/2004 12:33 PM Last night Ray and I headed up to San Francisco for the MovableType
3.1 Preview gathering. It was a good chance to talk with some other MT
fans and meet more of the Six Apart folks. We all walked away with a
32MB USB memory stick that contains the [nearly?] latest 3.1 code.
After a big of encouragement from the crowd, we got a quick demo of MT
3.1's new features. Anil got the equipment set up, Mena did...

MovableType, HomeSite and satanic cults
MovableType, HomeSite and satanic cults
05/15/2004 04:03 PMIn the midst of the uproar about MovableType's recent licensing change, it's nice to see a few rational
comments.
Although the situations are obviously different, the uproar reminds
me of when I started charging for HomeSite. You see, the first
version of HomeSite was free, but after months of providing free
software - and free support - I decided I needed to start charging for
it. It was impossible to handle my full-time job and
work on HomeSite, so I had to give up one of them. My day job paid
well, but it wasn't much fun - so the choice was obvious.
Now, I announced that I'd be charging for the second version of
HomeSite several months in advance, so I was completely unprepared for
the uproar once the price went into place. Messages similar to this Usenet post hit my
inbox, and my support forums were peppered with personal attacks.
Having been where the Six Apart crew are now, can I make a
suggestion to those who are flaming them? Even if you live in some
bizarro universe that equates earning a living with belonging to a
satanic cult, if you're really not willing to pay for MovableType, at
least have the courtesy to thank them for the free ride up to this
point.

I know that 99% of you hate the Typekey registration service and I

cause all of you to have to go register on another site for permission

Open letter to MovableType Developers /
Consultants
12/19/2004 03:42 PMThis note was forwarded through SixApart and should be
hitting the Developer Network mailing list or Forums
shortly
I am in need of a MT consultant / developer. I have a MT site
www.geeknewscentral.com, it is firing on most cylinders but it has a
custom CSS that has made it difficult for me to enable dynamic html
and make other changes. The designer of the skin has been too busy
with her own projects to be able to support us.
I have a small/medium sized budget and I am willing to pay someone to
come in look at the layout, and tell me what can be done better or
what needs to be brought up to speed. I would like a permanent
relationship with someone that I can hire to pay for their time
$$$.$$ to keeps an eye on new plugins etc and that I can rely on.
I would do it myself but have too many irons in the fire. If you
would be interested in working with us, please send me a e-mail
introducing yourself and some links to some of the MT work that you
are currently or have done in the past. Included should be your rate
scale and any minimums, keep in mind I am looking for a long term
relationship in which the consultant/developer becomes a integral part
of our team.
The individual must be willing to sign a NDA.
Task that I am wanting completed:
A top to bottom overview of the layout of the site and clean up of
any CSS and MT Tags.
Implement several specific changes to the site layout (NDA)
Get dynamic pages working!
Suggestions of plugins that could enhance the site!
Develop a Podcast only blog in line with out current design
Develop 2-3 new skins for new domains (NDA)
If you fit that description and will stick with us for the long
haul drop me a e-mail.

eWeek covers MovableType Comment Spam
Issue!
12/22/2004 01:44 AMBeing a diehard MovableType user we will be upgrading this site
tonight to MovableType version 3.14. The stop gap measures put into
place by parent company Six Apart looks like a good first step towards
fixing the problem that many of us have had to deal with.
I am sure my hosting provider will be happy about the upgrade let's
just hope they keep their focus and get a real fix into place so we
don't have to force users into registering with their third party
authentication service just to leave comments on this web sites.
eWeek has extensive coverage on the issue. [eWeek]

Configuring MovableType to Ping Yahoo:
Three Easy Steps
01/26/2004 04:50 AMAs a follow-up to last week's launch of RSS in My Yahoo! I'd like to
describe how amazingly simple it is to configure MovableType to ping
Yahoo's RSS database each time you post to your weblog. But first I
should explain why you want to do that... Simply put, if you ping
Yahoo, you content makes it into My Yahoo much faster. Otherwise, left
to it's own motivations, the crawler will pull your RSS feed every so
often (more often...

Responding to Anil Dash's request for
even more feedback about MovableType and
SixApart
09/21/2004 01:02 AMFirst of all, thank you, Anil Dash, for your patience and willingness
to engage in conversation with critics and fans alike. I would also
like to agree with you about tone, and to note that I did not help
matters with the titles of some of my earlier posts. I think my
criticisms were valid, but the tone of some of the titles was uncalled
for and unhelpful. Second, I can't believe you have asked me to post
more feedback, and are getting me to spend another 2 hours of my life
writing about MovableType, something I just said I wouldn't do again.
Some would accuse you of feeding a troll, and friends have asked me
why I spend so much time worrying about one Weblog / lightweight
Content Management System vendor (it's 'cause I like y'all). As I said
earlier, we all do have more important things to do. But you (and the
Wall Street Journal) asked, so I will try to be brief, constructive
and final. Where I am today with respect to recommending SixApart
products: I would recommend Typepad to a non-technical person who was
trying to start a blog, if they had some aesthetic sensibilities and
weren't too price sensitive. Presuming that SixApart can keep up with
growth and minimize downtime, it's a nice product, reasonably priced
and segmented, and the grouping on Typepad give the author a decent
chance of attracting a readership. SixApart does also seem to be
adding features to Typepad at a reasonable pace. If someone was price
sensitive, I'd send them to Blogger. Blogger's hosting issues seem to
be a thing of the past, there are now some nice templates for it, and
there are still smart people outside Blogger doing cool things for
Blogger. Plus it is free. It is hard for SixApart being in a consumer
business where so many of their competitors are giving away their
product for free. Maybe it makes sense for SixApart to do B2B only?
See below. I would recommend Movable Type for a institution or
business wanting to host a corporate blog that didn't have a lot of
internal technical expertise. There is good documentation, nice
templates, and good support. I don't know if SixApart permits it, but
if it does I would recommend that the business start with 2.661 and
let the dust settle on 3.x before upgrading. Depending on what the...
