Password protect your bl0g

Password protect your bl0g 08/14/2004 02:53 AM

I’ve got a new project, let’s call it Project X, and one of the things I needed to do was set up a password-protected blog on an existing installation of Movable Type. Everyone that has a user account in MT needs to be able to view the blog. I also needed to use basic HTTP authentication so that the RSS feed could be password protected but still be accessed by feed readers that know the password.

I created a single PHP file that is included at the top of each page in the blog, including the RSS feed. In order to get the PHP included, each page needs to be processed by PHP. You’ll need to use all .php file extensions (even for the RSS) or get your Web server to process HTML and XML files for PHP as well. (See the end of this article for information on doing that in Apache.)

Your Web server will now ask for a username and password before it will serve any page that includes the file. The username and password are then checked against MT’s database to see if you have the correct credentials. If you do, you won’t be asked to log in again until you close your browser.

Read on for the code. Keep in mind that this only works if you are using MySQL for a database, use PHP to output your site, and want your blog to be available to any user who can log into your copy of MT.

New product combines the latest and the most advanced cryptanalysis algorithms developed by Elcomsoft's research department. AOPR is capable of instantly recovering passwords for a wide range of Microsoft's business and office applications, including all components of MS Office, from the very first DOS versions to Office 2003 programs, including the ones for Windows, Mac, Pocket PC and localized versions. Don't just protect the unconceived:
protect the inanimate!
05/09/2004 02:30 PM
Fafnir of Fafblog has written a good think-piece explaining the logical next step in the Bush administration's campaign to protect the rights of the unconceived: protecting the rights of the inanimate.
This is yknow a huge step backwards for women's health and for contraception and the prevention of abortions. But it is a huge step forward for what we at Fafblog like to call the "rights of the unconceived," which is just a few short steps from what we are really lookin forward to which is the rights of the inanimate.

I have personally spent hours an hours talkin to cans, waffle irons, boxes, printer cartridges and forks and they all dream of one thing: no longer bein treated as second-class citizens in the United States.

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall” – congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.

Will Your Password Need A Password?

Will Your Password Need A Password? 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
If you hadn't realized it already, simple username/password combos are a pretty weak form of security - yet they're pretty much all we have for many important online systems that store our most vital information. While there are other solutions out there, many companies (especially in the US) have been incredibly slow in adopting "two-factor authentication" systems that require a password plus something else - such as a onetime code generated by a device you have to have with you (or built into your computer). The idea, then, is that if your password is revealed, no one else has the device, so it's useless. If they find the device, they don't have your password, so it's useless. However, so far, many users don't value this additional security very much - and the devices still aren't all that cheap. Plus, many companies are worried that users will react negatively to such systems as it may slow down the user experience - causing them to look for other (albeit less secure) alternatives. Then, of course, there's the worry that people will start using such systems that aren't compatible with each other, so you'll need separate devices for every account - which would be much worse than before. Others, such as those in the fingerprint scanning business think a biometric approach makes much more sense - but that leads to all sorts of other questions and issues. Still, as there are more and more cases of fraud and identity theft due to so much weak security, it seems increasingly likely that companies will be forced to adopt more secure methods.

Your Password For A Chocolate Bar, A

04/19/2004 07:01 PM
Last year we pointed to a study saying that people would give you their password in exchange for a cheap ballpoint pen, and this year the prize has changed, but the result is the same. A new study shows that all it takes is a chocolate bar and plenty of people will cough up their passwords. Of course, what they don't realize is that whoever was giving out the chocolate bars was the real sucker. A study last month showed that people will cough up all sorts of info if you just ask for it, without giving anything in return.

Password Recycling

Password Recycling 07/20/2004 07:39 AM

Why registration-sites suck: Boing Boing links to a story on Wired about registration at news sites. The article is okay, but Boing Boing's comments ring very, very true:

The point that everyone seems to miss is that no one can possibly keep track of a thousand passwords for a thousand websites, which means that these sites undoubtably contain recycled passwords [...]

The more you recycle a password, the higher the likelihood that you will use it in a sensitive context — a bank site, a message board, an IM client, an auction site — where someone might impersonate you or even commit identity theft crimes against you.

Okay, raise your hands, how many of you have a "standard" password that you use all over the place? Everyone does it. Show me someone that uses a different password for every registration or account and I'll show you a liar.

I know a friend that has a group of passwords that he uses based on context — one password for throwaway Web site registration, one for email accounts, one for IM, one for sensitive stuff like banking, etc.

What if someone at one of these services decides to take your password and see where else it might work? Yes, I know the passwords should be hashed when stored in their database, but there's no guarantee that they're going to do that.

How may of you have a password stored in some service or Web site that you've long-since forgotten about that would also work in, say, your bank's Web site?

Is biometrics the best solution to
replace password authentication?
02/01/2005 08:19 PM
Biometrics. It's a topic I come back to periodically and enthusiastically. Most pundits, gurus and analysts agree that passwords as a method of authenticating people are not at all secure and need to be replaced. Many feel that a biometric authentication - via fingerprint, retina scan, voiceprint, or even DNA - represents the ne plus ultra of authentication methods. Still, there are quite a few people who argue that using biometrics is like placing all your eggs in one basket - what happens when the basket breaks, what happens when the biometric system is compromised?
