AdSense Login Blocked in IE, but Mozilla

Despite press about Googles *nix roots, the html cranked out by the Googleplex has been mostly IE exclusive code. That code has often broken down when run on browsers like Opera and Mozilla. For instance, Gmails block on Opera users. So it comes as a bit of a surprise to IE jockies to be locked out of AdSense for a day.

Despite press about Googles *nix roots, the html code the Googleplex has pumped out over the years has been part-n-parcel built by and for Microsofts Internet Explorer. Often times that code breaks other browsers such as the Gmail block on Opera and other third party browsers. So it comes as a bit of a surprise to IE jockies to be locked out of AdSense for a day.

Description: Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in Mozilla / Mozilla Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to spoof the source displayed in the Download Dialog box. The problem is that long sub-domains and paths aren’t displayed correctly, which therefore can be exploited to obfuscate what is being displayed in the source field of the Download Dialog box. The problem is that Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox don’t restrict websites from including arbitrary, remote XUL (XML User Interface Language) files. USB Key Replaces Gateway Login

USB Key Replaces Gateway Login 06/08/2004 12:31 PM
Pronto Networks introduces USB key to allow secure login without passwords: Pronto's Internet Key lets a user plug in this small device into a USB port to authenticate themselves over a Pronto-based network. The release doesn't mention what software is required to use the system, which was co-developed with Sweet Spot Solutions. While this is an idea that's been churning for a while--Microsoft is working on something of this sort, for instance--it's problematic when it's a single-vendor solution. Think about the grocery store affinity programs: how many cards do you have to carry to get the best price if a single store isn't convenient to you? My mother-in-law has a dangly array of those, which are capable of being managed, but not ideal. So, too, would a USB-based authentication system quickly get out of hand if you needed to carry a separate key for each system you might use. The best solution will be something akin to a SIM card as used in GSM phones, which has already been successfully tested as a method of secure authentication across a Wi-Fi network to a back-end cellular accounting system. Instead of a single key for each system, carry a USB key with either biometric (fingerprint) or password-based strong encrypted for mounting that contains a variety of certificates for use with an 802.1X EAP-TLS system. Even better, embed Secure ID into the USB key so that its ever-changing number is visible. This would provide yet another level of security: stealing the certificate and the username/password doesn't gain access without the Secure ID number. These kinds of authentication systems don't need to be baroque, and different networks might require different levels of security. But there should be checks and balances so that the theft of a string of data (like a certificate) or a piece of hardware (like a USB key) doesn't jeopardize the integrity of network....

Top Tip: Linux login authentication?

Top Tip: Linux login authentication? 08/09/2004 11:17 AM
How does Linux handle the Windows equivalent of domain logins? I'm looking into using Linux in the computer lab of a small school which has approximately 20 computers. I'm familiar with Windows domains and its logon security, but am not sure how it works in the Linux world? Are there domain controllers? How is logon authentication handled?

PithHelme t is a Input Manager that filters content in Safari.

From the developer's site:

The PithHelmet adds some some basic but powerful content filtering to Apple's Safari browser. The basic purpose is to filter advertisements, but there are other potential uses as well (blocking Flash, Shockwave or horrible midi loops).

It works with Safari beta v64 also.

Open document formats

Open document formats 06/17/2004 11:33 AM
Last week Tim Bray wrote about his (and Sun's) involvement in the European Commission's investigation into the OpenOffice and Microsoft flavors of XML office documents. The upshot:
You can find the Committee's conclusions here; they're short, readable, and defy summarization. [ongoing]
The conclusions are indeed concise, and the bulleted recommendations even more so. I'll quote them here, changing only <ul> to <ol> for ease of reference:
Therefore, it is recommended that:
  1. The OASIS Technical Committee considers whether there is a need and opportunity for extending the emerging OASIS Open Document Format to allow for custom-defined schemas;
  2. Industry actors not currently involved with the OASIS Open Document Format consider participating in the standardisation process in order to encourage a wider industry consensus around the format;
  3. Submission of the emerging OASIS Open Document Format to an official standardisation organisation such as ISO is considered;
  4. Microsoft considers issuing a public commitment to publish and provide non-discriminatory access to future versions of its WordML specifications;
  5. Microsoft should consider the merits of submitting XML formats to an international standards body of their choice;
  6. Microsoft assesses the possibility of excluding non-XML formatted components from WordML documents;
  7. Industry is encouraged to provide filters that allow documents based on the WordML specifications and the emerging OASIS Open Document Format to be read and written to other applications whilst maintaining a maximum degree of faithfulness to content, structure and presentation. These filters should be made available for all products;
  8. Industry is encouraged to provide the appropriate tools and services to allow the public sector to consider feasibility and costs of a transformation of its documents to XML-based formats;
  9. The public sector is encouraged to provide its information through several formats. Where by choice or circumstance only a single revisable document format can be used this should be for a format around which there is industry consensus, as demonstrated by the format's adoption as a standard.

The draft Decision Framework for Federal Document Repositories (prepared by the GPO's Center for Research Libraries (CRL) for creating the specifications for a system of regional repositories for tangible federal government documents) will enable the Superintendent of Documents to evaluate the qualities, resources and capabilities of potential repository facilities and their governing organizations, and identify the configuration of light (accessible by many authorized users) and dark (secure, back-up) repositories most appropriate to ensure the persistent archiving and public availability of tangible federal documents. "Formation of such archives would enable Federal depository libraries to consolidate or reduce their local tangible collections secure in the knowledge that copies will be perpetually available from the GPO Collection."
