Did Google Get Loud On Purpose?

Did Google Get Loud On Purpose?

Did Google Get Loud On Purpose? 08/13/2004 06:07 PM

Well, it's a ridiculously slow news day, so it's really no surprise that something like this might boil up. Following yesterday's efforts to give techies and investment types an extra reason to buy a copy of Playboy, IPO pundit Tom Taulli is (half jokingly... I think) rolling out the rumor that Google purposely pushed Playboy to get the interview out in order to have the SEC delay their IPO until slightly more favorable conditions existed. That would seem especially sneaky, and it's unlikely it's actually what happened. Though, if it is what they tried to do, it appears the plan didn't work. The SEC has made Google explain away the difference between their filings and the Playboy article, but otherwise has let the IPO move forward.

From the 'Let it Die' Department: A couple of Apple hackers have modded up their Apple ]['s so that they can run web browsers (yes, you read that right).

Oliver Schmidt and Glenn Jones have made a working prototype Apple ][ port of Contiki that works with Glenn's self-built Apple ][ Ethernet card. Thanks to Tim Haynes, a video capture of the port is available for download (9 megabytes, DivX encoded). The video shows an Ethernet-equipped Apple ][e loading and running Contiki, the network configuration process, and the web browser surfing to www.apple2.org! Oliver did the porting of Contiki to the Apple ][ and Glenn made device drivers for his Ethernet hardware.

Apple should ship those guys an iMac, just out of admiration.

Tune in next week when we play Unreal Tournament on an Atari 2600.

A loud quiet launch

A loud quiet launch 04/15/2004 11:51 AM
The first line of the news.com article on A9 says that "Amazon.com has quietly launched a test version of its long-awaited search engine" (emphasis mine). Curious. I wonder if news.com felt slighted at the way A9 chose to initially publicize the site, breaking the story via a weblog instead of a traditional media outlet (like, say, news.com) and the "quietly launched" is a displeased rejoinder to the strategy. Judging from...

Nova Spivack raps it out.....

Communities of Purpose: The Third Type of Community

I've been thinking about different types of communities recently. Two forms of community that are often discussed are "communities of interest" where the members share a common set of interests (e.g. a community of people interested in Japanese culture), and "communities of practice" where the members share a common set of skills (e.g. a community of marketing professionals). To these I would add a third type called a "community of purpose," where the focus is on a shared goal (e.g. a political activist community or a community collaborating on a common project). Most existing community tools today are either focused on building communities of interest or communities of practice. But I am more interested in creating tools that help people create more productive communities of purpose. To do this we need to merge the functionality of groupware and knowledge management with emerging community tools for social networking, blogging, and wikis.

Well, the web's a funny place, isn't it? Just the other day, I posted my random idea about a trash talk virus for Mac OS X. You know, virus is probably the wrong word. It's more of an ad-hoc network entertainment application. But that's not the point. Anyway, within a matter of a day or so it got some interesting traction. First off, Ross suggested that it be used to help track down the folks who screw up wireless networks...

Well, for PC users anyway. The bug in Thief: Deadly Shadows that caused saved games started on Expert difficulty to revert to Normal upon loading has been patched out.

Still no word on a means of recourse for owners of the Xbox version though, which suffers from the same bug. Since Thief is a single player game, it was not made for Xbox Live and therefore doesn't have any easy means of patching. So you Xbox people, you'll still be able to do stuff like shown above and still pretend you're playing on Expert for a while longer.

Novell CEBIT announcements are loud and

Commentary: Novell made two major Linux-related announcements at CEBIT this week. They announced SUSE Professional 9.3, due to be released in April, and ZENworks 7 for Linux. Unlike many press releases in this industry, announcing a new customer contract or otherwise allowing marketing folk to message the masses (forgive me, Baud, for the babble-speak), these two actually have some weight to them. Novell's director of marketing for SUSE LINUX, Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, and ZENworks product management and marketing vice president Alan Murray combined to brief NewsForge on the news yesterday afternoon, following the SUSE Professional 9.3 announcement at CEBIT, but ahead of today's unveiling at CEBIT of the latest version of ZENworks.

Video Games For Higher Purpose

More Adults Trying To Capitalize On
Video Games For Higher Purpose
04/15/2005 06:44 PM
The media has latched on to this theme and is clinging to it like a bug-eyed Grand Theft Auto addict: using video games to educate the younger generation. Yesterday, it was about teaching kids how to combat world hunger and avoid the perils of the internet. Today, it's about li teracy and cultural sensitivity. First, a teacher in the U.K. has thought of creative use of an existing game -- the Myst series. He takes his young students through a round of Myst play, encouraging them to pretend they're actually inside the scenes and then write down their observations. The second example involves a new game sponsored by the U.S. Army that walks soldiers through everyday situations in Iraq, schooling them on the appropriate ways to interact with locals. Both stories demonstrate the educational potential of hip-looking games. Adults are increasingly catching on to the medium's power to keep the attention of younger people. It also raises a corollary lesson: If the game is going to work in the classroom, it should be innovative and interesting, rather than contrived and pandering.
