the distortions of a form-less copyright
system
06/22/2005 02:31 AMSo the world is bursting with extremely cheap, very good high quality
digital cameras. No doubt the vast majority of images snapped (is that
the verb these days?) with those cameras are by people who have no
interest in enforcing a copyright. Yet as Grant pointed out to me, the
AP
reports, an increasing number of photo labs are
refusing to print "high quality" digital images, out of fear that they
"might" be professional photographs, and therefore, "printing the
pictures might be a copyright violation."
This begins to make plain a point Rusty Russell suggested to me in an
email recently: No doubt copyright is a property right. But why isn't
anyone out there defending the property rights of digital camera
owners? This is a conflict in property rights, produced by an insanely
inefficient property system -- copyright. The solution is not, as some
seem to believe, to abolish copyright. It is instead to abolish the
insanely inefficient part. Yet it is the character of our time: to
argue against inefficiency is to mark yourself as a "communist."

Arrested For Copyright Violation
Japanese File Sharing System Creator
Arrested For Copyright Violation
05/10/2004 04:31 AMFor all the complaints we have about bad laws in the US, at least (so
far) we've been able to keep from declaring file sharing software (on
its own) illegal. That's not the case in Japan, where the creator of
a supposedly anonymous file sharing system
ha
s been arrested for "abetting the violation of the Copyright Law."
Apparently, the fact that such software has plenty of legitimate uses
as well doesn't matter. Shouldn't they also be arresting the creators
of just about any other technology that can be used to break the law?
In this case, they say it made sense because they have evidence that
two people used his file sharing program to download illegal
files. I think there's plenty of evidence that computers have been
used in crimes. They should be arresting everyone who created
computers. Plus the internet is full of criminals these days - so the
folks who started the internet clearly to be thrown in jail. Just
think how many crimes have been committed by people in cars! A pen
can be used for both forgeries and to stab someone. Someone ought to
be locked up for that. The list is endless. Clearly, no technology
at all should be created and anyone who created any technology
deserves to be in jail.

Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM
The
Copyright Board of Canada
issued a ruling on
" private
copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several
components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not
(presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for
levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new
charges.
the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing
copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current
Canadian law.
However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for
personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether
the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the
board said.

Content-aware search
Content-aware search
02/10/2004 02:49 AM
At InfoWorld's 2002 CTO Forum, Google co-founder Sergey Brin threw
cold water on the idea of instrumenting content for intelligent
search. "I'd rather make progress by having computers understand what
humans write," he said, "than by forcing humans to write in ways that
computers can understand." Brin's pragmatic stance sharply opposes the
idealistic view of the Web's inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, who continues
to evangelize his vision of a Semantic Web full of carefully encoded
content that we can precisely search and fluidly recombine. My own
humble contribution to this debate is a prototype search engine, now
running on my Weblog, that tries to steer a middle course between the
Scylla of simple fulltext search and the Charybdis of unwieldy tagging
schemes and brittle ontologies. [Full story at
InfoWorld.com]
I keep trying out phrases to capture what I'm aiming for. One is
'dynamic categories,' another is 'interoperable content.' Probably
neither will stick, because these only describe how to do something,
not why. The why, of course, is productivity.

to Terminal.app in Mac OS X. If their executable flag is set, they are
automatically executed. The usefulness of these double-clickable files
are somewhat limited as it's nonobvious how to get them to act on the
contents of the folder they live in. For your pleasure, here's a
technique to make the script cd into the folder where it lives, ready
