Linux Munich Deal Final

Linux Munich Deal Final 06/17/2004 06:45 AM

German city picks Linux over Microsoft: We've known about this deal for a while, but what's interesting is the lengths Microsoft went to win and was still rebuffed.

Microsoft offered last-minute concessions that would have made Windows and Office cheaper than switching. USA TODAY obtained city records that revealed Microsoft: Underbid a competing Linux proposal by nearly $12 million, offered to let the city buy only Microsoft Word for some PCs and strip off other applications normally bundled in Microsoft Office, including Excel spreadsheet and PowerPoint slide presenter, [and] threw in millions of dollars' worth of training and support services for free.

Munich Reconsiders Linux Migration

Munich Reconsiders Linux Migration 08/04/2004 01:25 PM
The City of Munich has put its planned migration to Linux of 14,000 desktop PCs on hold due to concerns over software patents, the city's CIO said on Tuesday night. The call for bids in the LiMux Project, as it is known in Germany, was due to begin last week. But on Friday, Green Party Alderman Jens Muehlhaus called for the city to examine the impact patents might have on the decision, in light of software patents legislation currently under consideration in the European Union.

Muehlhaus said a cursory examination of Munich's proposed client software had turned up conflicts with more than 50 European software patents. The fear is that a company holding one or more of these patents could issue a "cease and desist" order to the Munich government, effectively shutting down the city's computer systems or forcing the payment of licensing fees. In response, the city decided to cancel the planned call for bids until the patent issue has been investigated, according to a statement from Munich CIO Wihelm Hoegner issued to the LiMux Project mailing list late on Tuesday.

Running in Munich

Running in Munich 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
I'll be heading to Munich at the end of the week for a conference, and while I'm there, I need to continue my training for the Paris Marathon. I found this article from Runner's World, Travel: On the Road: Munich, Germany that suggests many areas to run in the city. Of course, it assumes it's not winter, and extoles the lushness of the parks and warns of nude sunbathers. The routes sound good though and I'm looking forward to exploring the city on my training jogs.

Drat, here I am about to leave for Munich in a few hours, and I just now remembered I hadn't posted asking for recommendations of what to see while there. I'm sure I'll find some Internet connection when I arrive, so go ahead and let me know what I can't afford to miss during my brief sojourn to the Bavarian capital. Neat architecture, pretty scenes, and cool cultural suggestions are appreciated. And of course, if there's something I just shouldn't miss (a museum? a food? a beer?), let me know. Thanks.
