Everyone loves/hates the Olympics!

Everyone loves/hates the Olympics!

Everyone loves/hates the Olympics! 08/13/2004 12:14 PM

Free the Olympukes. Fontshop, the 500-lb gorilla of type foundries, has released Jonathan Barnbrook's Olympukes dingbat font - which does a good job of reconciling the love/hate relationship many of us have with this most constructed of all sports events - for free. Barnbrook is the po litically savage designer behind the Virus typefoundry, and is probably most well-known for collaborations with Damien Hirst and the typefaces Exocet and Mason (which was originally called Manson – and "intended to speak of the uncomfortable associations between elegance and violence" – but was renamed Mason in a fit of pique marketing), which are sold through the fine folks at Emigre.

The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics

The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics
08/20/2004 02:25 AM
We've already talked about how the Olympics forced certain radio stations to pull their internet streams because they weren't approved for internet broadcasts of the Olympics, and now comes the news that no athletes participating in the games are allowed to talk about their experiences on websites. Considering the number of empty seats (and the weak television coverage), giving the games a more personal feel, letting the athletes talk for themselves (rather than those sappy profiles on TV) would help people to connect more with the games. That, though, would involve remembering that the games are actually about what happens in the events, and not how much the Olympics can squeeze out of sponsors. Haven't they figured out yet, that if no one cares about the games, no one will want to sponsor the Olympics any more? As for those who dare to disobey and actually talk about their experiences online? The Olympics are threatening to remove their credentials or possibly "take legal action for any monetary damages." Monetary damages? From posting your thoughts on the games? Seems pretty clear just how focused the Olympic organizers are on money instead of the athletes and the contests.

Safari Hates Me

Safari Hates Me 01/31/2003 03:59 PM

I've been trying my hardest to get the dynamic portions of this site to work in Safari. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the scripts, Safari just doesn't recognize my second Javascript file. It all works great in every browser but Safari, but anything I do in my second JS file has no effect on the page. I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm running out of ideas. If the site acts a little funny in the next couple hours it may be because I'm pulling my hair out and messing around with the Javascript to try and get it to work fine. Other sites are rendering Javascript as complex as mine in Safari without issue, hence I'm convinced Safari just has it out for me. I'll update when I have more information, and less of a headache. PLEASE leave me a comment or an email if you have any ideas.

Michael Moore Hates America

Michael Moore Hates America 05/19/2004 04:14 PM
Michael Moore Hates America is a new documentary looking to discredit filmmaker Michael Moore. Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11 is causing quite a stir at the Cannes Film Festival, where it has been met with rave reviews, and standing ovations lasting upwards of 20 minutes. With Moore's recent distribution problems with the film, a new project seeks to challenge Moore to distribute his film for free via the internet to prove that "the message is more important than the money," and to silence his critics, who contend that with the immense profits his controversial film is sure to garner, he is a "war profiteer" just like Halliburton.

omheader.jpgIt's night time in Califgornia on a Sunday night - and once again Om Malik has an exclusive (at least to me):

AT&T SBC deal is done

ALERT: WSJ just announced that two companies have reached a tentative deal and it could be announced pretty soon. According to the report, AT&T CEO David Dorman will become the president of the joint company, while SBC Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre is going to retain those two positions. AT&T will have three board seats on the new combined company’s board. “SBC is expected to keep using the AT&T brand name, at least in dealing with its business customers, because the AT&T name is recognized all over the world. SBC’s brand, by comparison, has little recognition outside its territory of mostly Southwestern and Western states,” The Journal adds. The $15-billion stock plus $ 1 billion cash deal turns SBC into the largest phone company in the US, with presence in local, long distance, wireless and business markets. More to follow later!

"I've been getting all these great mixes sent to me out of the U.K. for years and years," he told Attitude magazine, "and I just started saying to the record company, 'Look, I really, really love what they are doing.' I think that my record company was a little taken aback but, genuinely, if I could make that type of music then I would. If I could master the equipment then I would love to.
